  • In this installment of SoundStage! Talks, SoundStage! editor-in-chief Jeff Fritz interviews Peter Comeau, who holds the title of Director of Acoustic Design within the IAG Group. Peter discusses the Mission loudspeaker brand, and, specifically, the company's iconic 770 loudspeaker. The relaunch of the 770 is imminent, with production beginning in the UK in January. Peter recounts the history of the design and how the reissue has advanced while keeping the core principles of the original 770 loudspeaker intact.

Great interview Jeff. Peter is a real legend and icon in audio circles, and has designed some of the most celebrated speakers in the history of Hi-Fi, all coming out of the UK

That was so awesome! Thank you for letting him speak freely, and without interruption. That’s how you conduct an interview IMHO. Let the subject, who’s being interviewed go on, unless they need to be prodded into speaking. And I’m so excited to get more info on these, and hear the reviews of them. These look simply amazing! Thank you very much. ✌️

I listened to Mission 770 Freedoms in the 80s at two different shops, they were my favorite stand-mount speakers at the time.

Hi, Peter I have a speaker that I believe you designed. The 75th anniversary Wharfedale 9.1. I love them. I believe that they won some awards as well. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦.

The originals 770's is a must have for audiophiles as it was designed as great BBC monitor. Even though I have upgraded my speakers to Wilson Watt Puppy, I just can't part with the Missions.
Really look forward to listening to the new ones. Thanks Jeff for the update and interview.

Takes me back to my early days in the UK hi-fi scene. Good to see they are still doing well. They are seasoned campaigners. Made some good little amps as well.

The new Mission 770 should be available and ready for shipment by the end of March 2022. £3500 per pair, stands included.

At some point in the next while, I'll be in the market for a near/mid field monitor in my studio (I'm a working, career engineer and producer), and I'm sensing these will be good in that role.

Sounds promising what Mr Comeau and his team created. I suspect these will be introduced to the public at UK's Bristol HiFi show starting Feb 21. Hopefully we can find out about pricing then. Maybe about 2.5× to 3× the price of the Wharfedale Lintons at a rough estimate(?), taking into account 'built in Britain', the time consuming and more dedicated efforts they made with tweaking. Finally higher quality materials used and a more complex manufacturing process.

Unfortunately, from what we've heard, the Bristol shows is either cancelled or postponed.

Such a beautiful speaker. Will they be available in the US? From my limited research, the original Mission's were known for being flat and neutral from 20 to 20. How sure are you that they will do well in America (if imported), where a bold, dynamic sound is preferred? I mean, this is the home of JBL, Klipsch, and Polk.

    • @soundstagenetwork

From what we understand, they will definitely be available in the US.

Did you just completely forget about all the amazing East Coast manufactured loudspeakers, built a few miles from where I live, with a more laid back sound? Like the KLH mentioned in this interview. I definitely wouldn't say a bold dynamic sound is preferred here at all. In my experience talking to other audiophiles on the internet in various forums, and on here too. I would say that just as many, if not more prefer a bit of a warm sound. As well as many that enjoy a straight neutral speaker, which have also been built here BTW.
The N.E.A.R 15M speakers I own come to mind. They were built in Maine, and still manage to retain a very high value on the used market here 25 years later, after they were originally built. My girlfriend listens to them everyday AAMOF. She loves them, and choose them over my Denton 80th Anniversary speakers that are in way better shape, and are much better looking. And I think sound great, but nope she preferred the dead neutral pair instead. ✌️ 🙂

The only question I have is why they are not bi-wired. Not that I believe bi-wiring is a good thing, only what their reasoning was.
