Usually ghost stories give me the chills. Like...they make me feel uncomfortable, haunted, and scared.
With Sarah Whitehead or the Black Nun...its something different. She or her story or sightings genuinely only make me feel sorry for her. I dont feel scared or uncomfortable, even when I imagine encountering her in that depressing haunted tube station.
I just feel sorry for her and her fate and I kind of want to comfort her.

I've walked or cycled past that thousands of times on my commute, and never even thought it was a church.
There used to be a Post Office adjoining it on the King William Street side.
Regarding Bank being a depressing station, it certainly is if you have to use the deep lines like the Northern or DLR. The Central line is less of a chore, but before Covid it got horrendously busy.
Furthermore, there are many long pedestrian routes, particularly form the Monument interchange to Bank. Nowadays you can do an out of station interchange and take a rather more pleasant over ground walk along King William Street.
The new Bank entrance on Wallbrook in the Bloomberg building must get the award for the most useless pedestrian tunnel, it's very long. I'm sure it's quicker to go over ground and use one of the many entrances at Bank itself, particularly now that Bank junction is only open to limited traffic.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

I spent over 10 years working next to Bank (End of Lombard Street near Mansion House), and found the underground part of the station a bit strange, then found out it used to be a crypt from which the remains had been moved (like many others for Inner London building), it always felt like a strange kind of station. It used to have lots of little shops in its bowels, but after a modernisation they seem to be missing, now it has the feeling of tunnels in a wasteland, and you just want to get out as soon as possible.

Fascinating. I can't remember how many times I've used Bank Station over the decades, but never knew it was built on consecrated ground.
It can be confusing at first with so many exits, but it's worth remembering that there are well-maintained toilet facilities at the exit for the Royal Exchange, and never walk to Monument via Bank underground, it's quicker and more interesting above ground.

    • @nezbrun872
      @nezbrun872 4 года назад +2

It is indeed far more pleasant above ground doing the Bank-Monument interchange, especially if you know the right entrances and exits. ISTR there was a travelator before the DLR opened. You used to be charged again if you went over ground, but now with out of station interchanges, there's no extra charge. Depending which way you're coming/going, Cannon Street can be quicker for District/Circle, just don't use the new Bank entrance on Walbrook, you might never see the light of day again!

Some years ago I was lucky enough to be allowed access to the grave site of Nicholas Hawksmoor which now lies within a private garden. It is an imposing tomb over set by a thick stone cover. At some point in the past an attempt was made to lift this and as a result has a thick diagonal crack across it. Behind it is a stained glass window bearing the image of St Botolph the patron saint of Nottingham where Hawksmoor was born. I can find no images of this online and I wont be uploading my own out of respect for the current landowners privacy.
My view on Hawksmoor the satanist is not repeatable in polite company. He was buried on consecrated ground in plain view of his patron saint. There is no decoration of any kind on his tomb. His architectural style was heavily influenced by Wren who in turn was inspired by the Romans and what was happening at the court of Louis XIV. This resulted in imposing buildings with small footprints relative to their other dimensions. In short the buildings of Hawksmoor have f*ck all to do with satanism but quite a lot to do with the imagination of Peter Ackroyd.

I have used Bank tube many times, and while it is not the most salubrious of places itself, I have nothing but happy memories of my journeys there, as it was my destination for various cultural trips into the City or occasionally to interchange for journeys onwards. I have certainly never encountered the Black Nun. St Mary Woolnoth had a bit of an odd atmosphere, but that's probably more because my tastes in church architecture are unapologetically Anglo-Catholic, which it is not.

Well that was awesome. You should do voice work, if radio shows were still a thing, you could be a star.

Wow. The death penalty for fraud. Just imagine how many executions there would have been after the financial crash of 2007/8. Maybe the mile would have itself become a ghost town. Worse still, think of how many awful TV shows would have been made of Yevette Fielding and others screaming hysterically as they wandered around this area and all of the new hauntings in Canary Wharf.

Well I have just finished the play list for the Tales of the Tube and you have another subscriber. Towards the end of the play list I did notice that there was a number of 'lost' videos and my curiosity was peaked. So in the vernacular, what gives?

Not lost, just not yet published. So they’re coming over the course of the coming month.

This may sound boastful but many years ago I attended a drinks' party at the Bank of England & at one point in the evening found myself out on the porticoed balcony shown at 1:52 and again later. I well remember the spectacular view from up there ! 😎👍👍
