Conceived through in vitro fertilization, Anna (Abigail Breslin) was brought into the world to be a genetic match for her older sister, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia. When Kate turns 15, she begins to experience kidney failure. Anna knows that if she donates a kidney, her life will be limited. Thus, she sues her parents to obtain medical emancipation and control over her own body. Anna seeks out Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin), who agrees to work for Anna as her attorney, filing for the partial termination of her parents' rights.
