I bought a low grade commercial laser light and wanted to see if captive Africa BIG and small lesser cats and some other animals could be enriched by it. I showed the light to each of them and recorded their responses.

I’ve seen the recommendation (for laser lights being used with domestic cats) that you finish the ‘hunt’ with the dot disappearing on some kind of treat or toy so there is a sense of satisfaction and conclusion for the cats. That way the light is not just a source of unresolved frustration. If you decide to incorporate this into the enrichment for some of the cats, perhaps consider ways of doing this. :)
Good. Yes, and also if the dot is moving endlessly it doesn’t always get/ keep the feline’s attention. Stopping sometimes and building suspense seems to work more because it lets the felines get stalking and ready to pounce as opposed to wanting to just chase 100% of the time.
Great info! Ive been a natural horsemanship student and trainer for years and also student of dog training cats have always been a little harder to understand but I guess its common sense i lacked! Lol Of course this makes sense to me duh!

Well thx! It's part survival and part not wanting to stress him out. I used to try and make up by walking with him along his fence but it didn't work. I don't visit that place anymore so he's better now, but he did do this to other folks too. Has better enclosure in a new location now.

I work as a socializer in a private, no kill, domestic cat sanctuary. The way you were loving on them and bringing them a toy to enrich their lives was so exactly like, at least in spirit, what I do with the cats that are placed with us. Even the way you approached the cheetah is the way I approach our cats. Very cool to see.

The servals are a really nice cat. Non aggressive like cheetahs. Sure they hiss some, but only because they don't know you but never aggressive.

He hates his electric fence and goes ballistic when touching it... takes chunks out of his tractor tire... I've seen it. I was petting him one day through the fence and I think his ear touched the electric line. He suddenly when completely postal and roared 2ft from me. I left in a hurry. It's been anger at me from then on but I don't see him anymore as I have my cheetahs at another project now. Running Wild Conservation. But thx!

Quick tip for the viewers: there's some research suggesting laser play affects cats' mental health negatively because it lacks the "catching prey" aspect of a normal game. Cats participating in it regularly have been shown to have consistently elevated stress levels, be more apathetic and aggressive (in the frustration aggression sense)

You can avoid this by letting them “win” after a session with the laser. Either you can switch to a toy they can actually catch and then let them catch it, or feed them a treat after you play with the laser like they’ve caught something. Kitty would love it if you did both!

I've got two house cats that are brothers but their reaction to the laser light is so different. The tuxedo cat almost never goes after it but the grey tabby...
For him, the laser is crack in light form! He can hear the click of it from across the house and comes racing for it with a crazed look in his eyes.
He will follow it no matter what I do with it even fast tight circles to the point of him getting dizzy and falling over(and he still wants more!).

My cat and I play with a laser , and we were watching this together because she loves cat vids. As soon as she saw the laser dot she started tracking it and then tried to swat it on my computer screen. Now she's gone off to her toy basket waiting for me to come and get the laser out.

I'm always amazed by the way you interact with these animals, especially the Cheetahs, servals and caracals. I wish I could be with you when you're there. I'd absolutely love to be able to have interactions like this, because cats just love me. I do miss my Guide Dogs, too, and I can't get another one right now, because I'm unable to work anymore.

Then all sudden. ROAAARRR!!!! in my face between the fence, reared up and angry. He touched the electric fence with his ears and convinced I did it. Captive wolves can be like this too, hold grudges based on perceived wrongs against them. It's been 5 years and every time I go there to volley, he remembers my voice and then targets me the entire time. I think that fellow in South Africa Jamison has a similar problem with one of his tigers now, wants to kill him. I'll never have a tiger, even as a rescue given to me.

The goat is mean... the cheetah are not.
I can kinda see why, cheetahs are mostly friendly towards humans due to the fact that we don't match the characteristics of their prey at all, but goats don't really give a shit and they are known to sometimes charge people. They don't injure badly most of the time but they can have an attitude.

Truly. Very very soft fur too. They have spots like cheetah and stripes like tigers. White like a white tiger.
There are some laser lights you can get that have changeable tips on them so you can have them chasing something much larger like a mouse shape etc. They are still home use type lasers. Also I have found that my kitty loves it best if after a good chase, i land the light on a kick bag or something she can sink her teeth into. For these guys, i would suggest something like a small bite of meat or something maybe? So they get a reward for all that energy they expended :). In any case ending the game by landing it on something they can either eat or tear apart makes it less frustrating and more fun for them. Especially the feral cats I look after who are used to hunting for their food.

I know! 2nd longest cat legs to the cheetahs. Makes them the 2nd fastest too. But very weak cats and loose fights so they are quite non aggressive tonsurvive like the cheetahs as well.

He's a tough customer. I am genuinely afraid of him when I volunteer there. He always picks me out from the crowd and charges. Maybe it is an honor he thinks of me as a threat to his domain and not many else. Sees potential in me and that threatens him. That is an honor.

@@fiberisacarb9877 Fushan used to huff (a tigers purr) and allow me to pet and scratch his cheeks. Then one day he ROARED for no apparent reason while I was petting him. I was SCARED shItless! I was two feet from his head when he screamed at me! Angrily! I didn't know why.
Then it occurred to me later, he HATES the electric fence and will actually attack his tractor tire when he accidentally touches the fence when no one is around. I think his ear touched the fence above him while petting him. The lower fence line was not electrified so volunteers and staff could interact with him.
Fushan has a life long grudge against me because he thinks I did him wrong and hurt him. A very emotional and intelligent cat but still lacks a certain logic and understanding that we humans have to properly deduce events. He cannot comprehend it was the fence that hurt him instead of me. I think he doesn't care anymore... he hates me and probably forgot why. It's been years since the event that changed our relationship.

@@zafiruzoma6234 YES, animals hold grudges. Wolves and dogs too. They say you have to be careful when managing captive wolves because if they perceive an insult or injury to them, they look for who caused it and if you are around when it happens, they blame you.
it's kinda funny, my cousin's dog is absolutely fascinated by laser pointers and goes crazy any time they take out the remote that makes the light. when the light isnt on, he looks up at the remote as if to try and will it to turn on. he goes from looking back from the remote, to the floor, to the remote, to the floor, and back and forth until it turns on. he doesnt give up even if they tell him they're done and stares intently at it sitting on the table for a good long while. he's adorable lol, you cant point it at your foot or he will full on attack it and it HURTS

Demon cats... of death. That's their reflective membrane back of eye when light hits it, it shines light back. Helps cats see at night. They use moon and stars as night lights... or humans lamps.

The African wildcat (atleast I think that’s what you said) looks almost exactly like my cat except he is a lil more orange than them. His name is gizmo and he is a bengal cat. He kinda looks like a tiger but alot less menacing We’ve had him for about 6-7 years.
