Centre-State relations define the balance of power and responsibility between the central and state governments within India’s federal system. This relationship is outlined in the Constitution, dividing powers into three lists: the Union List (central control), the State List (state control), and the Concurrent List (shared control). Despite this division, the Centre holds significant authority, especially during emergencies or disputes. Cooperative federalism emphasizes collaboration between these levels, though conflicts can arise due to overlapping interests. The Sarkaria and Punchhi Commissions reviewed these relations, recommending reforms to strengthen state autonomy while maintaining national unity.
