Gentíl Montaña, born in Ibagué, southern Colombia, into a musical family, took up the guitar at an early age, performing with his father who played folk-music professionally. In the 1960s, after several years of composing his own songs, Montaña began studying the classical guitar and in 1975 was awarded third prize in the Alirio Díaz Competition in Caracas. From 1976 he visited Europe and lived for a few years in Madrid, but also travelling to Greece. In 1981 he returned to Colombia where he opened a music school under the name of Fundación Gentíl Montaña. His aim, following the years of violence and disorder in his country, was to ‘exchange arms of destruction for musical instruments and develop a true tradition of the guitar in Colombia’.
The porro is a musical style and dance from the Caribbean region of Colombia. It is a Colombian cumbia rhythm that developed into its own subgenre. It was originally a folkloric expression from the Sinú River area that evolved into a ballroom dance. It is played mostly by brass bands or orchestras, and danced in couples. This genre influenced some of the greatest Latin American bands of the 1960s, with songs such as "Pachito E'ché" , "Se va el Caimán", and "Me voy pa'Cataca" to name a few...

The more I see Thu Le's videos the more impressive her talent is amply demonstrated. Her skills as a virtuoso are on display in her masterful treatment of the Rondo in A minor Opus Two by Dionisio Aguado, a fiendishly difficult piece. A very different piece is the one here by the composer Gentil Montana, it's rhythmic drive is very demanding on the player but the execution by Thu Le is as close to flawless as is humanly possible. Two major talents are showcased here; the composer and the performer, BRAVO! on both counts. Michael Mckinney
