My dad (RIP) always grossed my mom out by just grappling an apple off the tree and eating it. She would tell him he was going to eat a worm. He would say back to mom,” protein Rosie no worries.” And wink at us all. Then he would tell us that not all fruit is grocery store pretty. But it is always more nutritious right from the plant. Then he would explain that we just cut any bugs out and use the best parts , feed the pigs or chickens the rest. He was from a family of 8 children and they were farmers.
I was raised gardening and canning. Times were hard and mom and dad did all they could to put food on the table. There were 9 of us. Right after WWII. I still enjoy it. Plus I've learned new skills like freezing and dehydrating. I applaud you.
Food waste in our country is absolutely grotesque! It is wasteful on a magnitude that should bother everyone and such a disregard for resources and life of animals! Preparing your own and working hard for it brings an appreciation as well as being able to trust the ingredients. Teaching your kids to ‘waste not, want not’ is fabulous!
I wish that I had land that I could grow a big garden and have animals to process. For one, when I did can, there wasn't any pesticide or stuff like that in what I canned. With processing my own cattle and hogs, I knew what they are and no antibiotics. It was so much healthier for me and my family. That was 25 years ago when I lived on an acreage.
I don’t homestead, but do have a garden, chickens, and do buy from local farmers…like my yearly beef, I know the farmer, his methods, and the taste is amazing. I recognize I can’t do it all, but I can source things locally, get to know the farmers, and preserve those things and still feel I’m doing better for my family.
I grew up on a farm and I still do a lot of the same skills. People need to understand that what is worse than a worm in the apple is 1/2 a worm. lol I think hard times are coming and people are going to learn these survival skills whether they like it or not.
I actually miss gardening, canning, freezing, and raising my own meat. The initial cost was high when getting started but oh, so worth it. I still go to the Farmers Market and get vegetables bulk and can. I don't do as much as I did when I had my own garden, but I still enjoy (fresh) canned vegetables. I'm hoping to purchase a side of beef and a hog from my Aunt later this fall. I will can some of that meat also. I like having canned meat for when I go camping with friends.

It's hard work, homesteading, but it sure pays to know what's in our food. I do it for the same reasons as you. I also think that there are going to be tough times ahead, and I want a nice backstock of canned goods and animals to have around to supplement the rest of our food supply. I really don't think people realize the severity of the situation at hand. We've got to get back to the old ways. Funny story, my 3year old grand daughter was over here, she has her own raised bed to choose what she wants to grow. They were over here a while ago, and she had seen me do this before, she went over, squeezed the center of the cabbage, observed the cabbage head was fully formed and ready, and said to my daughter, " mama, this one's ready to pick." I about died laughing, especially that she was completely correct. She's learning a lot. Motivates me more when little things like this happen.😂
When my mom was growing up, my grandpa even butchered his own beef and hogs. They had a smoke house on the property. They did it all themselves even packaging the meat.
Apple picking season time. Last year I home canned 12 quarts of pie filling and 10 pints of low sugar apples. I plan to double the low sugar apple recipe . I dont have animals. I do buy meat from local farmers and some veggies that I cant grow. This year we are adding apple trees. I like to pick apples at orchard, but to save money I ask for box of 2nds. Im worn out from preserving but I'm blessed to be able to give family good food. 50 pounds of berries in freezer😮
I love your videos and agree 100% that we don’t know what we are getting at the grocery store. I wish I had a homestead. I do some canning but live in an apartment so I go to an Amish community an hour away. God bless. Put your feet up and get some rest momma❤️
I remember quite well of cutting out worms on apples. My mom didn't make applesauce but she did can all of our apples for pies, apple crisp, and etc. All of the apple scaps went out to the hogs

Hello, great video. Growing up we picked them off the tree not caring what was on them. Wipe it off on our shirt eat around the worm holes. 😂 Good times.
I’m not a homesteader but I garden and am learning more about gardening and preserving what I grow besides eating fresh. I wish I had “land” more than my backyard haha it always interested me and I love learning new skills and things. I enjoy watching your family homestead etc.
That is awesome! I think it’s great you are learning skills! We lived on 1/4 an acre before we moved here. I learned some gardening, canning I even raise meat birds in the garage 😂
@@mommabear2many that is resourceful 😀 thanks I always wanted to live on a farm but I don’t believe that’s in my cards. We like to travel so no more animals cause my moms not gonna like taking care of chickens 🤣🤣🤣
Since we bought our new to us home we are looking into raised gardens, possibly greenhouse, and chickens. Our oldest wants to raise a steer for 4 H until she saw the size of some steers, her sister wanted a hog and ditto. We’re on an adventure for city folk lol
I am not a homesteader, and will never be one but love what goes into growing your own food and preserving it! I am always learning…something every year and I enjoy it. Love all your video’s!❤️❤️❤️
I don"t have a homestead I have an acre of land I grow a garden, berry bushes, apple trees but I don't grow any animals because we have foxes and coyotes that run through our yard and kill all of our neighbors chickens. But I do can food and stock my freezers full. I also keep a large stock of pantry staples. But I still feel like I should do more with the way things are these days food prices are crazy high. Anyways take care and have a great day!
I was talking to a friend of mine that I'm going to get some cow's tongue real soon and make it. My Aunt has some from butchering a few of her cows. She shares her beef with her kids. She said that they all think that cow's tongue is gross so I'm going over there next week to get at least 3 packages of frozen cow's tongue. She did make me laugh when she said her kids ate but they all thought it was stew meat. She never did tell them the truth. 😂
I taught my self to can with u tube and I have a good stock on what we eat in the pantry and cleaning / toilet paper. The only thing we buy is some fruit with dairy products. My kids think I prep too much but I want extra in case we need it. My mom has chickens my eggs come from her ❤
I preserve food because 1) I really enjoy the process 2) I like knowing what I put into my food for the family and 3) For my health. I have servere fibromyalgia and eating things without all the preservatives they use in the food in the stores throws me into severe inflammation and pain. I don’t grow my own food because I live in a condo so I have found a great Mennonite farm close by and buy from them. It’s a learning curve.I also buy meat from a local locker that uses local farmers.
I glean if possible ,there are fruit trees all around and no one wants them, so I ask and I may can some for them for the trade, sometimes they say have them! Ok I do… I make wonderful fruit sauces from them, can pumpkin some for us some for the hens ..which give us eggs it a win. Win, no sprays so it great.❤
I love homemade everything even with my family grown - much better and healthier than store bought. I do peel apples when cooking if they aren’t organic simply because they are one of the top foods sprayed with chemicals. I use a smaller knife and cut the apple around the worm holes so do not throw so much out, but it does take longer and you do have the animals to feed the thrown away portion. I talked with my daughter on the phone last night. Her husband had made apple pie. Tis the season! Yummy!
