Great video. Started playing clawhammer/old time a year ago. Love it so much. I had no idea R Giddens was part of this. I've always been in awe of her. This old Appalachian LOVES Texas Hol Em. People who hate it are the same people who think whites invented country.
Great Eli, thanks for the history of the banjo and how its use developed. Appreciate the insight and knowledge you share.
You are a gift to all humanity ❤
You are the best at banjo instruction online and I have been playing banjo for 60 years......
Great lessons both playing and history! Thank you so much.
One of your best videos. Takes significant time, preparation, and work to put something like that together. Thank you.
I appreciated this video so much I played the first 5 minutes for a class I teach at a University here in California.
Cool! I live in the UK and own a Crawford minstrel banjo, love this old music and history.
Thank you for the vid, loved it👍
Thanks Eli! Great job on your tutorial.
YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!! THANKS FOR BREAKING IT DIWN BABYYYY!!!
Great content man! Love all the ol pics you dug up. Thank you for sharing.
Eli, thank you so much for this great video!
Thank you! for the banjo lesson. And Thank You!!! for the history... and resources. Really look forward to checking out those sources.
Wow. Great history. I just started reading Well of Souls!
Throw down your heart by Bela Fleck really explores the history of the banjo too. All the way back to Africa.
Just learning love it 😅
excellent video! keep it up brother
Muito bom encaixar um contexto histórico nos videos!
Thank you, Eli!
Nice on that banjo Eli
Great video. Thank you for putting this together, and for the links below. I learned of RG through the tv show Nashville ! I’ve followed her since and recently read a very good article about black country music in Zelle magazine.
You're doing great work!
Excellent!
You should be able to tune down that low with the John Hartford d strings. Don’t know how that will sound with clawhammer, but some food for thought
This is such a great video, thank you very much for posting it. When I first heard the song, I was trying to figure out what tuning the banjo was in, then, when I learned that Rhiannon Giddens was playing I knew it was probably not in an open G. The way you explain how to play it in the video is very insightful. I can’t wait to start learning this song.
On another note, have you ever done, or consider doing, a tutorial on Rhiannon Giddens Louisiana Man? Specifically, the live version that she did on Austin City Limits? The opening to Texas Hold ‘em reminds me of the opening to Louisiana Man. It has that same deep, low, soulful sound.
When I first heard this song I knew immediately who was on banjo lol
Is your tuning different than D maj. Another tab I found uses aBEAD
Texas Hold ‘Em
I knew that this was Beyoncé’s best song musically the first time I heard it. She doesn’t get enough credit for the research and sampling she does, but instead she’s presented to the gp as a thief or something.
what is the name of the banjo you are saying she played?
It's a minstrel banjo made by Jim Hartel
How much does a fretless banjo like that cost. Anyone?
