Restoration of large planes recovered from a flea market, with the means at hand, in order to be able to reuse these tools for woodworking… 👇
For this, there are several stages of reclamation: first the wooden barrels, which are not always well preserved, or the wood which has become deformed.
Then there are irons which, beyond the rust, have sometimes been slaughtered during previous maintenance and sharpening.
We are only beginners, we have no claim to make a restoration in the rules of the art. This does not prevent us from at least attempting to restore them, as best we can.
Carpentry (and its hand tools) is an exciting universe and we just want to share our enthusiasm to discover, restore and use these tools.
For information, the first plane whose barrel was deformed, it is mainly due to humidity, then drying, the wood warped, but the fact that the two pieces of the barrel were not assembled in the same direction as the grain of the wood, the deformation took place in two opposite directions, which caused the detachment but above all a very large difference in level between the two pieces.
The sole would have had to be reworked anyway.
