A tip for those who struggle to write character voice: take your own personality and exaterate or decrease different parts. For example, when I was creating my persona, Foxglove, I exentuated my narcissism and decreased my introverted-ism (I don't think that's a word lol). It will (or at least for me) trick your brain into thinking you're just writing yourself.
I’ve been accidentally doing this for years lol, all my ocs are so closely intertwined with my own identity that really it does just feel like writing myself at this point

I think a problem for me is I have two sets of really clear cut OCs, who ive already thought up angsty scenarios and potential interactions for. But whenever I have to develop them further to try and connect (or even make) a full-fleshed story for them, and the possiblity of having to tweak those already pre-established scenarios comes up, I get really defensive and dont change anything lol
feel that. awhile ago, i transistioned some characters from being fan characters for an anime to having their own original story. I cherished them, but with the new setting and plot line, i had to change a lot about them 😭 it feels like killing your children, but at the same time it's really cool to see them settle into their new lives

I've struggled with developing my characters since I began making them. Though I think I've found a good foothold in terms of story, background, and conflict, this video was very informative and has opened my mind a little bit more to how I would go about all of this.

Great tips! I also have that exact problem with my OCs so I'll definitely benefit from applying them. And i really like your art style! The painterly style alongside the lines is just MWAH. Just - can i say something about canvas flipping? When you flip the canvas so often, the advantages of doing so leave, since you get used to _both_ versions of the painting and it no longer helps you spot mistakes. At least, not as much as it would otherwise. I prefer NOT to flip until I'm at specific parts of a drawing, such as finishing the sketch or the lineart (or a chunk of it). That also makes it easier to watch and be entranced by it! I got a little dizzy and had to look away, which sucks because i love your process. But anyway, great video! It's pretty enlightening. Still not sure _what_ to bring out from them, but this will help. Also, funnily enough, I'm pretty good at voice... But NOT when i have to come up with it on my own. Give me a character i like and I'll probably get the voice right the first or second time i try, but give me an OC and. yeah... Im good at _mimicking_ voices, not _creating_ distinct voices. Gr. Could probably steal that of other characters to help me get started, that could be a thing!

I genuinely don't understand how you created your channel right as i started planning for my webcomic. It was like perfect timing! I'm having a lot of trouble with the character personalities and designs and making sure the worldbuilding isn't overbearing😭 the question "how much cartoon logic are you willing to use" was actually probably the most helpful because i had never even considered that and i started thinking if it would fit the story or not. Decided to use it just to elevate jokes! Thank you for this video, and the art is beautiful as always 😊
Definitely needed this vid! I have a story idea set in a near future where mech fighting is a highly commercialised and popular sport that explores how this large and secretly corrupt industry affects the lives and relationships of the mech pilots who play the sport. It's pretty much an excuse for me to include stuff I already enjoy like fun ensemble casts and detailed world building as well as some angst and drama. I've already worked out alot of important character and world details but i'm still having trouble fully fleshing out the characters themselves so this vid is a huge help!

yo my ocs recently hit their two year anniversary since being made, so lemme dump but still keep it short. my story was basically an omori rip off for ages until i replayed undertale and deltarune and fell into the rabbit hole of other iconic rpg games like yume nikki and oneshot. it takes place in the early 2010s, and the main character is a 14 year old girl named Audity Saeng, who after experiencing an EXETREMELY traumatising incident involving her childhood best friend (think asirel and chara, but chara did what they did without asriel knowing.) her father thought she was a murderer and left, her now single mother packed everything and moved to canada. during the 6 month period of her being stuck in her room, she started having vivid hallucinations and daydreams of her best friend Mabel. she lost all sense of herself after losing her, and realising she was nothing she tried to create her agian. she acted different, more happy but it was perfect to audity. then she moved to canada and started schooling, she meets a load of people and because this is also scott pilgrim based i imagine a load of stupid fights and magic shit happens for no reason. 4th breaking, cuz this would be a indie rpg game and psychological horror bits involving her past that will eventually lead up to the player learning what happens to the real mabel. its a billion times more complicated than this, but thats all i feel like writing rn
i totally love all of my ocs equally, i totally dont favour the schizophrenic man who shot his boyfriend in the middle of a psychotic episode and the said boyfriend became a god of romance but neither of them happy without each other and i love them so much i made their plot together become more relevant and i felt so bad because they’re just some sillies in a bad situation so i made them canonically meet up when the boyfriend comes down to earth with his god “friend” and am now considering make schizophrenic man a god after he dies so they can be together forever and on that note would it be weird to get the boyfriend to propose to schizophrenic man on his visit onto the surface since he’s dead and all??? anyways, i love all my ocs equally :3

I wish you all the luck with creating your own story! I basically don't have OCs and much more prefer to write fanfiction AUs. However, few years ago when I tried to write a long story I tended to write myself in the corner, because I've never prepared any backstory and traits even for main characters or worldbuild anything. I stopped writing for a while and was highly disappointed with myself. But when I started to do all of the things above, the world inside my head became much more alive. Now it's much more interesting to write, because I operate under certain rules and I know in which situations these characters most likely will find themselves, but at the same time I have some room for experiment. I have a rough story put out and okay character development and personalities, but the problem is putting everything in sense (Which is a part of world building). I made an oc realm where human appears 600 years later in another universe where everything is ruled by anthro animals. Humans are known as myths, gods, murderers, such and such. The human is a 16-year-old boy, bubble, fun, adventurous, wanting to solve mysteries of his foggy past life before he came into this world, and how to solve the discriminative conflict all started by some villain. I also have another side story with his sibling and something to do with time travel and how knowledge is dangerous, but i feel like the themes dont mix up, as much as i like this side story. And then i have another story happening with the boys psychological mindset and manipulation due by a guy in his head because of generational trauma , and know I'm really befuddled, i want to put all these themes in, but I'm not sure if psychlogical/adventure can even mix? Its like mental and physical, things that shouldn't be mixed or balanced, it has to be one or the other.
ALSO I KNOW NO ONE IS GOING TO SEE THIS, BUT I HAVE 2 THINGS TO SAY, 1ST OF ALL. VISUALIZE YOUR OCS, IF YOU CANT DRAW IM NOT KIDDING USE GACHA. NO MATTER HOW "CRINGE" YOU THINK IT IS AND 2, MAKE SEASONAL OTUFITS FOR THEM, IT IS IMPORTANT THEIR NOT WEARING A CROP TOP AND A MINI SKIRT IN -5 DEGREE WEATHER. omg i typed that in caps oops
I’ve made sooo many kirby oc’s i bet i made over 50 (maybe 100+ in the span of 2ish years lol) make a story gib em trama then like THROW THEM IN THE DARN GARBAGE if they live in my head they count i must have drawn like… 5? Mabye ten i write more then draw oc’s (and yet im an artist lol) also i want to make more oc’s (that are not from fandoms) total oc count must be 200+ tho :D
My biggest problem with OCs is that I can’t stop making them and I often forget which ones which, like switching VinnGleeb and GleebZquizh’s pronouns or not knowing the difference between GnarGnorp and GnorpGlorp. The biggest problem is I haven’t designed them all and sometimes when I try to design GneepZapz I end up with an entirely new character added to the list. (It does NOT help that the majority of them are blue alien cat furries)
I've been trying to write OCs with backstories and their relationships to their design and world for YEARS, I started that venture with Warrior Cats. I would highly recommend watching this video if you're becoming a nut for character writing, it has just been revolutionary for me. Entertaining and fantastic as always, and I hope you make a story you're proud of ❤❤❤

Now it's much more interesting to write, because I operate under certain rules and I know in which situations these characters most likely will find themselves, but at the same time I have some room for experiment. I am happy to write this way!

omigosh thank you for this! I have so much trouble designing characters and developing them, I had this one OC from middle school whom was a little hybrid cat child working in the army to pay off a debt her parent's got her into? I don't know 12 year old me was crazy😵💫

I'm in the process of writing seven different stories that all have a link together and I really needed advice on how to write certain OCs :')
I have a rough story put out and okay character development and personalities, but the problem is putting everything in sense (Which is a part of world building).
I made an oc realm where human appears 600 years later in another universe where everything is ruled by anthro animals. Humans are known as myths, gods, murderers, such and such. The human is a 16-year-old boy, bubble, fun, adventurous, wanting to solve mysteries of his foggy past life before he came into this world, and how to solve the discriminative conflict all started by some villain.
I also have another side story with his sibling and something to do with time travel and how knowledge is dangerous, but i feel like the themes dont mix up, as much as i like this side
story.
And then i have another story happening with the boys psychological mindset and manipulation due by a guy in his head because of generational trauma , and know I'm really befuddled, i want to put all these themes in, but I'm not sure if psychlogical/adventure can even mix? Its like mental and physical, things that shouldn't be mixed or balanced, it has to be one or the other.
ALSO I KNOW NO ONE IS GOING TO SEE THIS, BUT I HAVE 2 THINGS TO SAY, 1ST OF ALL. VISUALIZE YOUR OCS, IF YOU CANT DRAW IM NOT KIDDING USE GACHA. NO MATTER HOW "CRINGE" YOU THINK IT IS AND 2, MAKE SEASONAL OTUFITS FOR THEM, IT IS IMPORTANT THEIR NOT WEARING A CROP TOP AND A MINI SKIRT IN -5 DEGREE WEATHER. omg i typed that in caps oops

I’ve made sooo many kirby oc’s i bet i made over 50 (maybe 100+ in the span of 2ish years lol) make a story gib em trama then like THROW THEM IN THE DARN GARBAGE if they live in my head they count i must have drawn like… 5? Mabye ten i write more then draw oc’s (and yet im an artist lol) also i want to make more oc’s (that are not from fandoms) total oc count must be 200+ tho :D

My biggest problem with OCs is that I can’t stop making them and I often forget which ones which, like switching VinnGleeb and GleebZquizh’s pronouns or not knowing the difference between GnarGnorp and GnorpGlorp. The biggest problem is I haven’t designed them all and sometimes when I try to design GneepZapz I end up with an entirely new character added to the list. (It does NOT help that the majority of them are blue alien cat furries)

I've been trying to write OCs with backstories and their relationships to their design and world for YEARS, I started that venture with Warrior Cats. I would highly recommend watching this video if you're becoming a nut for character writing, it has just been revolutionary for me.
