- The Gen 5 Glock 23, chambered in 40 S&W. This 40 Smith and Wesson Glock Gen 5 features a slightly thicker slide which aids in recoil mitigation, which is always a good thing. We recently reviewed the larger Glock 22 Gen 5, and this is its smaller version, a Glock 19 size, which Glock calls "compact" size. Is this the best Glock? Is this the best CCW? Is this the best 40 cal handgun, firearm or pistol? What do you think?

Glock 23, my 3rd handgun purchased many moons ago. It was also my first reliable handgun purchase and has never malfunctioned. Have had it about 18 years now. It’s not my favorite Glock or handgun, but I trust it as much as anything. Mine is the gen 3 variates or course and I don’t shoot it that much anymore, but when I do it still shoots true and reliably.
Just picked up one today,I’ve had my fair share of glocks from 22,19,23,19x,g45, about three gen 5 19s every time I sell one I’ll fall in love and go buy another
My favorite semiautomatic handgun caliber of all time. I do want to the Glock 23 for my collection one day soon. Good video.
I have several Gen 3 G-23s in different colors (all black, FDE frame, OD Green frame, EXO Talo slide). I just ordered a Gen 5 G-23 in .40 S&W the other day to add to them. I never personally had any problems with my old ones however a beefed up Gen 5 version is always welcomed. 13+1 of .40 S&W in a package this size is a great carry and self defense pistol. I'm glad they didn't get overwhelmed by rookie amateurs opinions who ONLY own and use 9mms these days. There are plenty of better calibers and better choices out there once you boil it down that 9mm is cheap to shoot, easier for weak men and women with less recoil, easy to find ammo for. If you are looking for performance or stopping power the .40 S&W still wins every single time. Every modern bullet technology advancement that 9mm got all the other calibers ALSO got including .45 ACP, 10mm, 357 SIG, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum etc etc. These people lie so much or are grossly misinformed they don't even know what the truth is anymore.
I love my gen 5 23 with the thicker side it tames that 40 and make it an awesome gun too shoot
I love this gem 5 since I swapped the trigger for a Glock Performance Trigger. .
Oddly soft recoiling die to the heavier spring
Glock did something all 40 SW pistol makers should have done decades ago when the 40 SW emerged on the scene. It is a high-pressure round and absolutely requires a thicker, weightier slide. The HK VP40 has a larger and thicker slide than the VP9. The VP40 is one of the softest shooting 40 SW pistols I have ever shot. Drilling bigger holes in basically 9mm frame pistols was the blunder all pistol makers did back in the late 1980s and 1990s when the 40 SW came out. No wonder the round got a bad rap as wrecking pistols. 40 SW is a very good round.
" The VP40 is one of the softest shooting 40 SW pistols I have ever shot."
-it better be it weighs as much as a glock 20 and 21, might as well get the 45 or the 10mm.
"It is a high-pressure round and absolutely requires a thicker, weightier slide."
-it is the same pressure as a 9mm, so it does not require a thicker slide. The 9mm is 34,800 and the 40 is 35,000. I got the gen 4 and 5 and they both shoot identical other than the finger grooves. Recoil wise pretty much 98% identical. The thump is a tiny bit muted on the gen 5.
See I own a 23 gen 5 after having a gen four, the gen 5 honestly sucks in comparison, its heavier, thicker and hard to find a holster for and the biggest one, It is difficult to conceal carry compared to older gen’s
I recently purchased a gen 5 23. I already have a gen 5 26 and 19 but wanted a secondary caliber and this fits the bill and definitely a smooth shooter👍
I absolutely love your straight to the point and hit all the important details reviews.
Funny, am thinking about getting one. I already have a Gen 4 23 but am interested in the Gen 5
I have the Gen 5 - 23 and 22 and agree with you that the thicker slide does soften the recoil a bit.
Which do you think is best overall? I want the full size 22, but also wanna carry easy in the summer with the 23 😪
@@JoseSantana-yp1wp Then I would go with the 23 for carry ease.
@@randolph6511does the full-size barrel make a difference in recoil / carrying ? On a gen 5 ? I’ve carried a gen 4 17 and a 19 but gen 5 .40s are thicker don’t know if it would make a difference.
love love love .40 s&w!! it is the ideal cartridge caliber, but 180gr was always too heavy for the .40 s&w, great for the 10mm auto though! between 135gr minimum and 165gr maximum parameters is best, with 155gr/150gr bullet weight being ideal!
Do you seriously copy and paste this same stupid comment in every single 40 s&w post out there? no one cares ethan mac. 180 grain is fine 165 is fine i'm sure your 155 grain wuss rounds are decent if u can find the damn things. I'll stick with the normal 180 grain vs the bunny fart rounds you claim are so superior.
I had a Glock 23 Gen 5, and it's honestly the best Glock in .40 due to the reduced recoil and the lack of finger grooves. But finding a holster is a pain, they don't fit in any kydex Glock 19/23 holsters due to the increased slide width. Kept waiting for someone to come out with a 9mm conversion barrel, because I like dual caliber capability. The Gen 3/4 conversion barrels will not work in the Gen 5. Realized that the market doesn't care about .40 anymore, and no one will be tooling up to produce any conversion or threaded barrels for the Gen 5 .40 models.
Ended up getting rid of it in favor of an M&P 40 2.0 Compact, which easily converts to 9mm with a factory barrel and magazine swap. I think .40 will continue to lose market share, and aftermarket support for the Gen 5 .40 models will not be nearly as good as previous generations. But if someone is dead set on a .40 carry piece and loves Glocks, and can find a good holster for it (maybe leather), the Gen 5 G23 is an excellent option.
If a kydex holster is too tight just heat it up and remold it.
I just realized this with a owb holster I had laying around from my 19x
The Glock Store has a holster and 9mm conversion barrel for Glock 23 Gen 5.
Vedder holsters.
I love the recoil on my Glock 23 and 22 gen 5’s. Then again I am a 10mm dude, so the 40’s recoil is nothing to me and it hits harder than a 9mm.
Well we'll done video. My Gen5 23 is my EDC. But also have the Gen5 27 and 22 to round out the series. Trust them all completely.
Best review on the 23 I've seen, putting it next to the 22 and the subcompact showed me what I needed to see and make a decision. Good work.
Best Glock made IMO. I like the beveled/rounded edges on the slide from the increased thickness for the 40 S&W.
Mine came with Ameriglo night sights.
I installed a McNally flat faced trigger system. Man, what a great field EDC gun!
Gen 5 is tra$h.. Gen 3 is the best...
@@504Trey why?
@@504Trey IMO They are all good. It’s just that the 23 gen5 version is now more designed specifically for the 40 S&W cartridge.
However, I do like my Gen4 10mm’s. Will not go to gen5 in those guns; 20, 29, and 40.
Very good review Fam. Been debating if I should get the gen 5 because I like my gen 3 19 and 22. Gave my wife my 19 and I like the 40 rd.
Got an old gen 3 model 22 and 23. I'd like to try the gen 5 version because I'm left handed and want a lefty controls but not having good holster support for the wider slide is a deal breaker. I'll probably end up finding an M&P 40 and call it good. I'm a fan of the 40 cal and that Federal 180gr FMJ flat point is an heck of an penetrator and I use it as an woods round and then hollowpoints for civilization.
Blacksmith tactical has them for the gen 5 27 and 23 every bit as good as tier 1 and a little cheaper, options for optic cuts and options for ulitclips or discreet carry clips
If you’re not wanting to spend that much on your 6 designs makes them as well but more of a base holster for about 40 bucks
The Glock 23 gen. 5 is excellent pistol!!! The recoil is very controllable.
Anyone with gen 5 23 holster issues should throw a Streamlight TLR-1 or a Surefire on and get a PHLSTER Floodlight or a Henry Holsters Spark. Some other companies make non WML holsters. You just have to look.
I agree, the gen5 .40s do feel to have less felt recoil compared to the gen 4s. Thanks for showing the 40 S&W some time.
Where's the gen5 G22 review?
There's also a 40 conversion option sized inbetween 27 and 23 - the 29 (10mm) with a drop-in 40 barrel from Lone Wolf.
I own one and absolutely love it. There are holster issues though. I searched high and low and had a hard time finding one. That being said, I went to my local Rural King and low and behold they had a Blackhawk Paddle holster that fit it. So they are available...you just have to look. I wanted a LaserMax Guide Bore laser and they don't have them for a Gen 5. So my only knock on the G23Gen5 is that accessories are difficult to find.
My old duty weapon was a gen 2 Glock 22. I used to train a lot and put a lot of rounds through it. On several occasions i cracked those pins above the trigger, rendering the gun useless. I never figured out why. I would be hesitant to switch from my gen 3's to the gen 5's due to the single pin design.
On the gen 5 they added weight and I think it has its own spring for the 40. So the gen 5 are for the 40 now not a 9mm redesign
@@Dynomind1 Yes, you are on the money. It is a redesigned pistol meant for the 40 SW round.
I bought my g23 during the lockdowns just to diversify from 9mm. It has become my go to do anything pistol.
I'd really like to see 10mm gen 5s be produced but unless full powered 10mm ammo becomes more common, 40 s&w preforms essentially the same
I went to the Springfield XDM 10 mm . The Glock 10mm seem to blow up with factory high power loads .
My Springfield 10mm is probably my favorite gun at this point.
@@racer0316 I bet . Never worry about self defense with that gun
I love my Gen5 22.
Better than a Glock 19 imo
Love my G23 Gen4 and considering a G22 Gen5 ...
I saw your 40 S&W review on the HK USP, any plans on the 9mm version for a review?
Best gun, for the finger groves there’s probably after market sleeves with them that people can get, good thing is that you can get a 9 mm/mag and shoot this gun as a 9mm as well. I had a Gen 4 but sold it 😮, will probably get another one.
I misread and thought it said Glock 26 and saw the rail in thumbnail and got excited for a moment 😅
my gen4 doesn;t have those wear marks on the barrel and I probably have a few thousand rds thru it ...
The finish on the Gen 4 is a different process, it seems all the Gen 5s with the NDLC finish do this on the barrel but I have not seen any incidence of corrosion resulting from it.
I'm thankful to have waited til Gen 5 for my G34's.
Please review the HK p30 v3
Does the holster problem come frome the width of the slide or the frame?
If i put a 19 slide on the 23 will it be exactly the same like a 19 and fit all the holsters?
I' m from germany and the amount of guns to own is strictly limited. So swapping calibers could be a big benefit...
Thanks
That it doesn‘t fit all Glock 19 holsters anymore is a big step backwards!
Blackhawk T-Series S&W M&P 9/40 Sigma Holster
Or safariland 6360-4502
P320 5" holster
I’m a huge fan of the stock Glock sites
Thanks for the vid. Is the chamber still unsupported as in the gen 4?
9:03 view of ramp.
i like Glock, but i like the M&P 2.0 better! i have 2 full-size M&P 2.0's, both chambered in .40 s&w obviously 😜👍☝️😎🍻💯💫⚡⚡🔥☄️👑🎩🎓🧠💪
What 2 m&p do you have? Both 4.25"and 5"? If so what one do you prefer?
@@Was-here2 both 4.25", and prefer the 4.25"
Hammer is Safariland making holsters for the G23 Gen 5
Great informative video.
Can u shoot +P buffalo bore through the gen 5 40 s&w barrel? Is it supported?
Melhor pistola Glock para mim tenho uma dessa G23.40 S&W 🎉❤
What's the difference between Gen 4 and Gen 5 Glocks?
Bigger slide on gen 5 and a 20 pound rod and the gen 4 is 18 so it’s better on recoil. Heard you can switch barrels on it too
Thanks enjoyed the video
A great review!
Gen 5 is amazing with only 2 pins.
Is the barrel on the gen 5 Glock 23 the same size as the gen 4 glock 23?
I have a Glock 23 Generation 3. I have tiny hands. What is the difference in the generation 5 to the Generation 3 in the grips? Is the generation 5 easier for a person with smaller hands?
The Gen 5 has a slightly smaller grip circumference than the Gen 3. That, plus the fact that the Gen 5 has no finger grooves, would make the Gen 5 likely more comfortable for those with smaller hands.
Will the G23 Gen 5 fit a G23 Gen 4 holster?
me too own two tens
I bought one and it only came with 10 round mags.
Can the 357 dig barrels swap into the Gen 5 40 cals? I know they did for gen 4s
i have a Glock 22 gen 5 here in commie Canada
Good thing you have it now that Justin T wants to sign the new handgun ban for the great white north.
@@RoadKing-ky2bs already kicked in, no more handguns, we never had our natural rights recognized and acknowledged here in communist Canada, especially our firearm and defense rights, own and carry. but we have them regardless if they recognize and acknowledge our natural freedoms, especially our firearm and defense rights, own and carry
@Ethan Mac I hate that you guys have to deal with that nonsense. There are a lot of Canadians who love their firearms, but the government doesn't see it that way. Hopefully one day the winds of change will sweep Canada and the government recognize gun rights for its citizens.

Quick question can blank rounds be used in a Glock 43x
Why would the 5th gen be another .40 calibur 🤔🤔🤔
12:58 how far is your target?
We shoot at a minimum of 10 yards and in most cases for pistols no more than 15 - the average is about 12 yds
very nice….
I like my g23 gen 5, but i used it today for the first time and it jams 3 times or 2 i cant remember...maybe the bullets? I was very surprised
Magazine maybe ?
I can't get 13 rounds in the clip.
yuck
How cabum?
Glock the most returned gun to the gunstore!
