Jaguar iPace 10,000 Mile Review

  • For a few months now Kate and I have been using a Jaguar iPace as our daily transport to see just how good it actually is, and it's been ace. It's not without its faults and as a direct competition model to the Tesla Model S it's got some large shoes to fill. We managed over 12k miles so got a good idea for what It can and can't do, but largely, it can do anything.

    Had mine for 18 months, 13,000 miles, no problems, fantastic car, charge it mostly with solar panels or 5.5 pence per kwh over night. 5 + stars for me! Same wheels and I think there great.

    Another thought is that the Model 3 sells well despite the minimalist interior. I much prefer the inside of the Jag.

    You started off with the (not so good) points and my heart sank, but then almost all 10 of them wasn’t so bad at all. As for the consumption well your foot must be heavier than mine, but to be honest to be able to run a car like the ipace, no road tax, servicing every 2 years and less the 2p per mile for electric, surely you can’t go wrong. I’m just changing my SE for a HSE , what a great car.

Was about to get a Kona òver a Soul because it was slightly more efficient, even though there were many things l preferred in the Soul. Totally agree about the comments about the wheels and equipment level on the Basic model. It is just unacceptable to have , for example no heated seats on a 65K car.The S wheels kill the looks -I note the 21 model has 19" with a much more modern design.
    With new competitors coming in Jaguar need to up the standard equipment levels even further on all versions.Even the HSE doesn't get glass roof , air suspension etc as standard.
    Apart from that its a great car.

    An interesting review, I'm about the same mileage after a little over a year. It's a beauty, still find it a joy to drive, an absolute beast at overtaking, and great taking up snowy hills, muddy terrain or just blazing about in the wet. I haven't had any issues charging and the range is great. The reason I watched it was because I have wondered how it compared to a Tesla on some of the extra gadgets I guess you don't have on the 'fridge model'. I'm not impressed with the steering assist which seems to be unavailable on 80% of roads. Pairing with my iphone takes about 1 minute+ from getting in the car so I'm often driving before I can change source, pick music / podcast, and I can't lock the car until the motorized boot has closed, so when (I used to) go to work, I'd be at the elevator before I can lock the doors - they're all small flies in my ointment, but I suspect these are the kind of things Tesla as a tech company would do better than Jag as a car maker. I agree with what you say about the aesthetics inside and out, although I thought the Model S is a nice looking car, the i pace is a nice looking SUV, with the added versatility that comes with. I also think the space across the back seats is a bit tight, with 2 isofixes, it's impossible to get anyone in the middle - a mixed blessing if its a motherinlaw but it's something I can do in a Touran or Mondeo, and (IIRC) an XF. About the wheels, I got the 22s for the bling, they are a bit firm, but handle really well even in bad weather, I think the 18s give you better range though - so don't be too down on them :)

    I love my 2019 I-Pace first addition. It’s kills Tesla in every way with the exception of fast DC charging. In the USA Tesla kills with DC charging availability. I tried to drive from Houston TX to Colorado Springs CO. Had to rent a car since there is no charges to Colorado past Dallas. But if I had a Tesla would not be any issue. Putting aside fast charging the I-pace is a much better choice for me. Quality and fit and finish hands down better choice. I-pace looks amazing.

    Great video. The latest software has improved the data usage greatly and moved SOTA updates to not use the owner's SIM. I've not had the inside of the boot getting wet - maybe not had it in heavy enough rain, it does stream down the pillars. I'm obviously biased but I love the i-Pace and particularly the handling I've not experienced under-steer but I am on air suspension. Tell Florence she can always have a trip in mine.

    James' Roundabout was busy on that day!
    I prefer the looks of the iPace over the Model S, and the build quality certainly matches it, as far as we can see from the video. And to be fair, if you're spending close to the price of a small house on a car, you're not going to be worrying about a small difference in efficiency. Plus you have an onshore manufacturer, should anything serious go wrong with the Jaguar. That has to count for a lot, if you need quick turnover times for repairs and replacement parts. The S wins, hands down, on cargo space, however, and the Supercharger network is a big, but diminishing, plus point.
    So it comes down to, 'What are your requirements?' and 'What are your preferences?' when deciding which car to take on.
    Thanks for the fine review, James.

The responsiveness, handling and acceleration however is terrific and I still love the styling inside and out. However my next EV will be a Tesla because of the charging network. Most reviews of the iPace that I've seen comment on how laggy the screen response is. Did I miss where you mentioned it or was it not an issue for you?

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  4 года назад +3

      Hi. The first iPace we tested 18 months ago did have a very laggy screen and infortainment system, but it's been software'd out in later variants. We certainly didn't suffer any issues and the 3 screens you have work really well together, one of my favourite points of the iPace 👌🏻

    • @MG_Steve
      @MG_Steve 4 года назад

      @@Jamesandkate Yup - same system as I've got my XE. There's a tiny bit of lag to it, but really, its not an issue. I love the digital dash too. The HUD on the iPace is awesome too, I had it on a car I test drove when the IPace came out. if the XE's was the same as the iPace's (it is now, not in 2018 when I got my XE), I'd have ticked that option too.

    I've not owned an i-pace or a Tesla yet, but in the market for an ev and narrowed it down to either the Jag or Tesla. One thing which puts me off a Tesla big time is their build quality. Are there any signs of poor quality on the i-pace especially after @10k?

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  4 года назад +1

      None at all. The iPace build is far superior to the Model S, but the Model 3 build is much better. Depending on what size car you're after, try them both, but the iPace comes out on top.

    Good to hear your experince of the car. I think like most cars the biggest cost by far is depreciation (I know most people lease these days but that is built into the lease cost). I imagine the insurance is fairly hefty with one of these too? I quite like the looks of the iPace but it is way too big for me as I am single without kids.

      Depends where you live. In the US, give it another 6 months and yes. Along with most used cars it's been holding it's value very well, however, in the past two months they've been dropping quickly. A 2019 HSE with average miles was going for $70k two months ago, it's now around $50k, I think in a couple of months they will be going for $40-$45k.

    Whilst I too like my Tesla alot, the minimalist thing is is overdone (even more the M3). Its not the future, there are some things that need to be accessed quickly without looking and navigating menus. I fear that iPace was a technology demonstrator thoug, not really seeing the learnings bearing much fruit yet as the wider business is still not doing the obvious and building Disco Sport and Evoque as purely EV options. May be this is ‘just’ a platform thing and ROI needs to be realised ….

    Thank you James. I was in New Forest last week and I saw a white I-Pace with white seats. Personally, I prefer this car over Tesla. This is a biased view because I have been to a Jaguar car design exhibition and when you get really close to it and speak to the actual car designers you quickly understand the philosophy and you will fall in love with it. The space inside is similar to a Range Rover Evoque. I agree with the wheels aspect. By the way I prefer the image/video of the
    cars when it is on Tarmac compared to grass. Keep up the good work🤗
