The Battle of Britain was won before the Luftwaffe's first attack. The visionary Lord Trenchard along with his staff including the Immortal Dowding had the advantage of radar, which they embraced as the weapon of the future. As a result, the outnumbered RAF were always ready to intercept the Luftwaffe's attacks on the UK.
It was not won until September, August 18th was the turning point when the Luftwaffe threw everything they had had Fighter Command, Fighter Command suffered 34 planes shot down and 29 further aircraft on the ground were lost, the Luftwaffe lost 71 bombers and fighters, they were the highest daily losses for both sides, but Britain came out on top after this in the war of attrition, radar played a large role in Fighter Command response but many of the radars kept getting disabled from bombing, so it was temporal
Britons, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, French, Dutch, Belgian, Aussies, all sorts of people fought in the Battle of Britain and the amount of people from different backgrounds showed how important Britain was to foreign and domestic people. Absolute Heroes
Just been (again) to the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum at Manston. So amazing to see and touch parts of planes that flew (and, sadly, crashed) in the battle.
The Supermarine Spitfire gets all of the glory but there were a lot more Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain & they did most of the heavy lifting. If there were only Hurricanes the outcome would have been the same. The pilots & the radar are really what won that Battle, in my humble opinion that is.
My grandfather was a mechanic on the ground during the Battle for Britain. His job was to patch holes in the plane as quickly as possible to get men/planes back in the air. He never forgot the importance of this battle or the pilots that died.

If there were only Hurricanes the outcome would have been the same. The pilots & the radar are really what won that Battle, in my humble opinion that is.
You forget one thing, the Hurricanes just were not up to scratch against the 190's and their losses were much higher than the Spitfire. So the Hurricanes went after the bombers whilst the Spitfire went for the Fighters. And the Spitfire only gets the Glory because people see it as the better looking plane. People who really understand the BoB know what the Hurricanes did.
The Hurricane could not have won the battle alone, they were simply inferior to the 109s, they were just used to get the bombers (since we had loads already made), without the spitfire we would defiantly have lost (unless something of a similar calibre was created). However you are very correct about the radar, that was defiantly a decisive factor, and the pilots were also incredible
@@jamest5014 You should check out the official statistics of the Battle of Britain. 60% of the Luftwaffe losses were attributed to the Hurricane, and in fact the Hurricane was also responsible for almost as many 109 kills as the Spitfire. While the 109 was faster and better in the dive than the Hurricane. the Hurricane could out turn both the 109 and the Spitfire. It could also take a lot more punishment than the Spitfire and could be repaired much more quickly than the Spitfire. When the Germans switched the focus away from the airfields of 11 Group and started attacking London, the fatal weakness of the Bf-109 was exposed - it's short range. It's small fuel tank meant that it had fuel enough for ten minutes over London before it had to RTB to refuel. Low on fuel, the 109s faced running the gauntlet of repeated attacks all the way back to the coast. The other factor which lost the battle for the Germans was Goering's order to the 109 pilots to take up closer formation with the bomber stream in the latter weeks of the battle to protect the twin-engine Bf-110, which was proving unable to beat off the RAF fighters. This meant that the 109s lost their advantage of speed and altitude and the Hurricane's advantage in the turn was significant. Radar was important, of course, but the blunder of switching the focus away from bombing the fighter stations in the south-east to bombing London was the real reason the RAF was victorious. Dowding always said that turning on London was the Germans biggest tactical blunder and the fact that they failed to recognise the importance of radar to the British.

It seems there was a lot of luck as well as bravery that saved Britain during the battle of Britain. Historians claim the raf was on Its knees when airfield after airfield was put out of action due to enemy bombing. It is also claimed that at this critical point 2 German bombers "accidentally" bombed London. This triggered Churchill to authorise a bombing of Berlin. 100% this changed the course of the war, but it wasn't as close a call as some people think. The Luftwaffe had only 20 minutes or so over the UK before they had to turn back, because of the fuel it took to get there. The RAF on the other hand could be up individually for hours and could even be back in the air after a bailout within hours, hitching a lift back to Lydd or Biggin Hill or wherever. Add to that the fact that the RAF were better trained, better rested between sorties and potentially had the morale upper hand - home advantage maybe?. If you think about it, it effectively gave the RAF a numerical advantage of 2-3 x that of the Luftwaffe. This isn't to take anything away from the RAF, quite the reverse. The RAF were just too good and too well prepared. Arguably, it couldn't have worked out any other way.

Spitfires forever!!!!
Poggers
With that Two Steps From Hell soundtrack, in my mind the Battle of Britain soon turned into a battle of good vs evil.
Like God's angels vs Satan's demons in the skies. I only pray we don't have to face a third.
I really wish they had music like this back in the 50s through 70s. It would have been amazing to have the dramatic, orchestral music in movies like Battle of Britain and The Enemy Below. Those were great movies, but the music was so campy back then.
Same
Could do without the music ...the images would speak for themselves .
I like the music. I think it fits perfectly.

The music makes me feel more proud to be British for some reason
@christopher nolan should get a screenwriting of battle of britain and give us a hell of a movie.
What's the difference between a Spitfire and a Hurricane?
Spitfire faster and more maneuverability
Im pretty sure I wouldn't evan be here if it weren't for the spitfire and the RAF pilots who flew them.
