  • Follow along as I do some reliability upgrades to my Ford 400 in my 1979 F-350. I remove the junky Chinese HEI distributor and change it back to Duraspark, remove the Chinese Motorcraft clone carb and try out the Holley that I boiled in Pine-Sol with a couple of surprise findings in there as well! Will it run?

Watching that brought back some memories. Nice to see the HEI go bye bye, never saw the screen under the carb either. Great job 👍. Keep it up.

That was a first for me? All I can figure is it was made to catch chunks of carbon from the EGR or something?

I have a 77 f150 4x4 that I’ve owned since 87, love the old trucks, I even have the manuals that ford used for 77 at the dealership, great video Sir 👍😁

Dentsides are my favorite with the 1992-1997 OBS being my second favorite. Thank you for your kind words!

I really do appreciate you using your platform to explain how simple and reliable the Duraspark ignition system is. Plus, it really is hard to beat the old American made products. Your extensive knowledge of old Fords and related products is very impressive and valuable to the next generation of Ford lovers. Keep up the good work. And on a side note do you remember the matched set of PS belts Ford used in the early to mid eighties? Or if you know of any replacement options.

Thank you for your kind words! I hope I am able to pass some of this on to the next generation thru my RUclips channel. The Duraspark system is a rock solid system. What gave it a bad name was people using those cheap ignition modules from Autozone which are garbage. As far as the matched belts I don’t know the Ford part numbers right off hand but I know I used to buy matched belts from Gates at Oreillys. They came tied together in a pair.

Yes original Ford parts are best! The original Ford 2v Carburetor is the best 2v Carburetor ever made I would never put any other 2v Carburetor in it place! What I would do is switch to a 4v Carburetor and intake with a Rv Camshaft if you want to really wake up your sleepy 400

I like the Autolite/Motorcraft 2V carburetors but I like my Holleys also! That was a Chinese Motorcraft clone that was on that truck. It had a remanufactured sticker on it, so apparently places are selling new Chinese carbs as remanufactured originals. I haven’t had good luck with the clone carbs so I switched it to a Holley. The 400 in my 1978 F-150 I did upgrade the camshaft and put a 500cfm Holley 2V on it. It did wake it up but for what you would spend on an intake manifold and carb for a 400, you can put a 460 in them instead. Which is what I’m doing. Better engine design and uses less gas than a 400 when built properly.

Thank You. I have to say as long as I have ran good ignition boxes on mine, I haven't had any troubles. The one on my 4x4 is 12 years old now. But if a person uses the cheap ones ones Autozone or Napa...yeah you better carry an extra one or two lol@@softenerguy

@@BlackLabGarage I've had the good ones go bad too, but still last a long time vs the others. I couldn't find a source for the good boxes, any ideas to share?

I have to laugh at the people that swap out both the Ford duraspark and the Chrysler electronic ignition system for HEI because "iT's JuNk" never had a damn problem with either of those systems other than a few ballast resistors on the Chrysler product. The only issue I ever had with Duraspark is a reman distributor that had a worn breaker plate and was not letting the vacuum advance fully retract the pickup coil to base position when hot and causing a hard hot crank like the timing was too far advanced, but once the engine cooled down it would return to its resting position. Worn rotating surface, replaced with new distributor problem gone forever. I've also had issues with the aftermarket mechanical fuel pumps putting out 9-10 PSI. I've had this issue with Carter pumps, Delphi, Holley and Napa (federal mogul aka carter) I just install fuel pressure regulators on my carbureted cars and set them to 4-5 PSI. That Holley economaster carb sure sounds promising.

I do believe that Fords ballast wire is a better design than the Chrysler ceramic ballast block. I have seen those go bad but I haven’t ever seen the ballast wire go bad. Running a fuel pressure regulator is a good idea that I probably should start doing. That Airtex pump I had was not only putting out the wrong pressure but it would also let all the fuel run back to the tank. We will see how the Holley works out on this one. I have a Holley 4412 500cfm 2V on my 4x4 and I have to say it’s been a good one. I’ve changed the needle and seat once in 12 years. I never have to readjust it or anything.

@@BlackLabGarage Yeah, the ballast resistors fall apart with heat over time, never seen a resistor wire fail.

I have a ballast wire here that someone must have shorted out cause the insulation is wrinkled up and stuff but yet it's still good!@@MattsRageFitGarage
