Poland sometimes had a reputation of not being friendly to foreigners. People are called racists. I think that there is a totally wrong statement. Polish people are not welcoming to the people who are not good to Polish citizens and Poland. It is not the colour of someone’s skin that makes them bad, but their deeds and their words .
I came to visit Poland 2 years ago with my Tanzanian friend. He learned some Polish and use to speak whenever he had a chance . Of course he kept smiling . People loved him !
I introduced him to my family. He spent more time with them than me. My family doesn’t speak English but they managed communicating. They even cooked together using a recipe in Polish- he translated the ingredients to English. They thought each other the languages . This reminded me of building Babel tower .
      The meal was delicious!
      Good people good vibes ,

@@gratitude5740 I have never felt that people were not friendly I've had curious looks and even people coming up and asking about having my face tattooed but I'm always happy to talk to them, in the market in Wroclaw one old lady came up and held my arm and looked for a few seconds ,then smiled and said "artistic" and people around smiled to .
I love Poland and the Polish people .

That makes me happy and sad at the same time. It's great to hear you love it here but the fact that people are so eager to make assumptions and don't try to find out more about other countries is really disappointing. I'm Polish and currently living in England. My boyfriend is English so every time we go to Poland to see my family people think he just simply goes there on holiday and ask him "why on earth would you go to Poland?" The same with other non-convetional holiday choices - "why would you go to Georgia/Slovakia etc"
People are still so very narrow minded at times... 😔

This video demonstrates perfectly why it bothers me so much, that some people think poland is turning towards racism. Just because polish citizens want to keep their core values and traditions alive does not mean we care for skin colour. There is a reason why poland and its traditions survived so valiantly in the face of utter destruction. Its because we value the heart of liberty, love, identity, justice and family. Anyone cherishing these pillars of existence is polish in my eyes, they just dont know it yet.

I've been in Poland for 10 years now, after Chicago, Denver, then Seattle, and I've never regretted the move. I've been in Krakow but for 2 years that I lived in a small village, and I think that I was the only native English speaker within 10 miles, maybe more. And I never had a problem communicating in the village. A few people were embarrassed or shy to speak to me, but it seemed like most people thought it was an interesting situation.

Old people dont speak English usually because they wasn't learned at school during COMUNIST time they had to learn Russian now in Poland young people learn English since kindergarten then Primary school and College and they have to pass test from foreign language when usually is English before they go to study at Uni so young people speaks English so if you stuck in Poland and needs somone with English language ask people in 20s and 30s we know English and is becoming our second language. Therefore is a Education gap between old and young generation in knowing English. Many old people have problems to learn English but I'm teaching my Mum and my Dad some English and they're in their 60s and they bit struggling. I will be totally honest and its based on my own experience. I'm kind of a brown skin guy I visited Poland twice and i LOVE the country, the villages the culture and people were super nice... but, the there were still some people that hated my skin color and they showed it. One example... when i set in train a family prefered to stand next to door rather than sitting next to me. Its sad that there are still people in this day and age behave this way. And also a few incidence in clubs, they hate seeing brown guy dancing with them. Poland still lacks this issue. But I say they are overall great people and they just need to get used to being mixed with other races. I love Polish people

im always happy to see people having a good time in poland. unfortunately, for me, my family and friends its the other way around - once i have the chance to, i HAVE to leave this country as its painfully suffocating in here (and a lot more of painful stuff).
so it never fails to bring a smile to my face when others are enjoying their stay here, meet amazing people and make great memories and i hope it stays that way.
seeing you so happy and excited warms my heart :)

I have polish roots and i went to Poland three times, speaking not many, but a very little polish, and i always tried to commuicate with "Locals" in my littlem polish, and they were so warm and friendly and quite surprised that a "germanski" speaks polish or is even interested in learning polish^^ Even older ladys without any english were friendly when i was in those little cooking stores, you know which i mean, were two older women are cooking fresh meals for less cash, and you meat every "class" there, old women, "supermodels"(true Luke? I mean, look at these natural beautiful polish women, they don´t need Makeup or fancy dress to be absolutely stunning ;) )Workers with mustaches, and as soon as you as an "clear outsider" start to talk a little polish to someone, even if you are talking to your Buddy from work in german brings up a smile on their faces. I love Poland, and i love Kielce and Warswaw, and of course my family´s "hometown" Wroclaw. Go there, the polish people are no xenophobic morons like they are portraid in the media, i must know it, i am a heavily tattood goth guy with a mohawk, and even they could not show me any disrespect, so make your own experience ;)
    Greetings from Germany ;)

in regards to your first point, i think it's mainly about the combination of "exotic" look and polish language. I don't mean nothing bad. When i see a black man or an asian speaking polish it literaly warms my heart. For many years we didn't have much minorities of different color, so it is something we are not used to yet, and hearing polish out of their mouths is an amazing experience. also nothing makes me more happy than when you break stereotypes about Poland.

You're absolutely spot on with your first point, this has been the case for every country we've visited especially Japan. If you make effort to learn or speak even a tiny bit of their language they're generally more hospitable towards you. So take note guys, this can go a long way! 😁🙌

I just found this channel and I love how you are talking about life and people. Actually, when you were in Bolesławiec, you were only an hour (direct train) away from Żagań, a town where I grew up, which has many interesting sights. If you've seen the 63' movie The Great Escape - this is where the original escape from a war camp happened. There is also a castle worth seeing, which used to have one of the largest castle surrounding parks in Europe, and now most of it has become a beautiful forest with deers and other animals :) There are also, as you'd expect in Poland, some really interesting churches to see; and one of these used to be monasteries (now a school) from the 13th century houses a unique library with the whispering gallery/ceiling (so the sound of a whisper carries from one end of the room to the other as if someone was standing right next to you). There is also a replica of Christ's grave in Jerusalem (one of three in the world), but it actually looks like a small sarcophagus in the yard of a small church. There is a river (same as in Bolesławiec - Bóbr meaning Beaver) winding through the town, and there are some really pretty landscapes to see. It's a small town, but it has a huge military base with some American soldiers stationed there, so people may be used to speaking some English there. :)

About the fifth point... I really hate when foreigners say that Poles are unfriendly. This is so much different in Poland and countries we consider as more developed.
I do experience it everyday, as a Pole living in Poland but working mostly with clients from North America or West Europe. They always smile and ask me how am I, but the fact is that they don't really care about it. I would even say that they don't even expect the answer :). Polish people may seem unfriendly by default. But no matter if we've known each other for 2 minutes or 2 years - if I ask you if everything is all right, I'm ready to help you if it's not. If I invite you home it does mean a lot more than just adding connection on facebook.
I would say that people relations in Poland are just... honest. We may seem less approachable but whatever kind of reaction you will get - it's not fake.

Welcome to the club of travellers - you are not a normal tourist anymore ;)
Totally agree with point 3. US is not only New York and Poland is not only Krakow. It is in the small cities inbetween you see the real country
A person who speaks the local language also takes the local culture more to him self - a regular tourist only lives in his/hers own bubble to he/she gets home.

Hi Luke, I've only just discovered your vlog yesterday when it popped up on my RUclips because you went to Bielsko-Biała and I've been looking up trains to and from B-B as that's where I'm from, though I live in UK, and so Google did its job of linking your video with my search. And I'm pleased it did for I've enjoyed watching your visit to my home town, and made my self laugh when you came out from the station and turned right I heard my self shout 'no no not to the right Luke! You ought to turn left to the city centre!' And later on you walked down the very street where I grew up and where my mum lives, I got a bit emotional there, and thought hang on, imagine if I just spotted my mum among the people you were passing by, that would've been incredible! But she wasn't there and so I'm going to see her personally very soon 😊I was also laughing reading all the comments under that video, mostly letting you know that you have not seen the best bits in B-B! I do agree, but you saw what you saw, and you liked it and that's the main thing. You'd need a couple more days there to take the cable car up the mountains, that's a really special treat, also wonderful hikes in the Beskidy mountains. Anyhow I was very nicely surprised that you went to Bielsko and took the video, it was touching to see familiar places, especially that I do miss my folk, so thank you! And thank you Google 😁
I've enjoyed hearing your Polish, very good pronunciation! Hence my question, or a request..can you video yourself saying as many polish words as you can remember? Just for fun 🤓
Btw I've also liked Katowice, I had to stop there as Rayan air failed to fly one evening last year, and so I've a had a good walk all around the central part at night and have noticed huge changes. Katowice as you know is the main city in Silesia which is synonymous with soot from coal mines, and have been neglected for many long years in terms of renovation. This has greatly improved since 2004 when Pl joined the EU.
And Warszawa has been beautifully restored in the last 20 years or so. I'm happy to hear in this last 'hostel' video that you like Poland, and are encouraging people to discover it for themselves.
All the best in your travels, basketball and learning new languages, you sure are already a polyglot!

Thank you for this video on the behalf of Polish people. We are often perceived as rude, infantine yahoos with a small country totally not-worthy to visit. Because of these opinions, people are scared and detered to come and see for themselves. You are showing, that there is a beauty in people and in places and I was really touched watching, because I cought myself not appreciating where I was born and raised. Poland is as Poland is. Everyone who visits Poland will have a wonderful time, as long as you respect their culture, respect their traditions and respect the people. Show any disrespect, and you will be shunned, if not dealt with quite forcefully. They are a proud people.
