Wheelers At Large are out cycling again this time on the well ridden cycling route out to Cap De Formentor lighthouse on the island of Mallorca. This is our first ride in Mallorca and a combination of the heat and the long climbs take their toll on Julie.

Did that ride in 2022 and it's hard but beautiful and iconic - well done, well worth it. You'll look back with fondness.
Yes its a wonderful ride. I do remember it fondly and I will complete it to my satisfaction one day. 👍😎 Thanks for watching and commenting 😀🚴🚴🚴🚴🚴
Great cycling and climbing ,amazing views too , well done Julie for overcoming heat exhaustion and fatigue 🏔️🚴🏻♀️💪👍👏 “ When the Going tough, Julie gets going “🏔️🚴🏻♀️💪💪💪
Thanks Peter😊 it was stunning scenery,! 👍😎 Loving it❤😊
New bike looks nice, good to see you wearing the IOW badge.
Yep iow badge was earnt! Good spot Simon! 👀😉That was also a great ride too! 😄😍 Shame they dont do a lighthouse badge! 👌❤️😂
Great to see you rocking the IOW Randonnee badge 👍🏻
Haha. Good spot Andrew! 👍😊😉 That was an epic day on the bike too! 👌😍😎
Beautiful! Real riders bonk sometimes LOL! ❤👏🏼👏🏾
Thanks joy! 👍 Definitely the longest climb I've ever done! 🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️ 👌 I was so hot 🔥🥵. 🚵
Yeeeee HA! Love it. Hi Mike and Julie. Your new bike is a lovely colour Mike. Majorca does look amazing! A cycling buddy of mine used to carry a whistle and blow it going through tunnels/bridges. Scared the life out of me one day.
Yeah I would imagine that to be deafening... Julie's lungs are quite that strong 😁 It's hard to pinpoint why Mallorca is so good, it seems to be a little bit of everything 👍
Cheers Duncan, bought my bike for the colour and enjoying the performance 👍
Living in Australia, we never underestimate the need to stay hydrated when riding in warm/hot weather. Also we tend to ride earlier in the day to avoid the heat. It is very easy to get dehydrated and get sunstroke which as Julie experienced is very unpleasant and dangerous .... cover the back of your neck when riding and never underestimate the sun if you are not used to it. Take care. Thanks for the video.
Cheers Martin, can't beat reworld experience, this a first for us when it comes to riding in the heat. I'm terrible for remembering to drink on rides, so bad I often get back with a full bottle. Out here I seem to naturally know to drink. Julie is probably doing the same as she usually does and it's not enough. More stops and refills required. Another advantage of the Hawaiian shirt, turn the collar up 😁
Wow. Absolutely stunning scenery! I can only dream of visiting such a place with my bike! You guys have all the fun.
Julie, what bike are you riding in this video? And where can we get our YEEHAA hats?
This is my liv invite gravel bike, with road tyres on it. Mallorca was so nice. The roads were so smooth and the scenery was amazing! We will be going again! 👍🙂😎🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️
I added the Yeehaa to my liv hat,! 🤭😁 Thanks for watching us Barbs., 👍🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️
Awesome, you all are in south. Be careful with this sun you're not used to with that much sun at once. Watch after each other when out of your normal riding environment. Summer is coming it's getting hot here in Florida too.
Yeah i agree! He should be more attentive Thomas! 😂🤣😅
The sun is very hot here🌞, I've just bought some electrolyte tabs for my bottle and bananas to fuel so hopefully all sorted for the next ride! 👍
Loved watching this video, but please be careful out there. The heat is far more destructive than you'd think, especially to us Brits!!
Mad dogs and Englishmen... Bring it on 🤣🤣🤣🤣 You're right of course 👍 Cheers Andrew
Good effort. Mallorca has some great rides but fuel and fluids are key. 👍
Absolutely... Very easy to forget when on the bike though 😁 Please keep reminding her.
Have a great trip and fingers crossed for no rain. It’s a lovely climb and even better when closed to cars.👍
Very peaceful and pleasant ride,I can't imagine what it was like before the restrictions...😮
Oh WOW! That was great! Mallorca really seems to be a cycling heaven! Have fun!
Julie, take care in that heat! That was a bit worrying...!
Cheers John 👍🙂 I was so hot! 🔥🥵 Biggest climb I've ever done..... So glad to have got it done! 👌🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️
Glad you're ok and well done Mike for assessing the situation and being mindful of the added dangers that over-exertion can bring, to any of us. My bonk in 2018 was very frightening. I had a seizure, worst experience of my life. I was put on a drip as I was dehydrated and needed electrolytes. The seizure was partly due to the heat and loss of salts but later that year, an MRI located a benign frontal lobe calcified lesion from a head injury I had when an idiot threw a brick at my head, walking home from school when I was 13. The moral of the story is that when I exerted the body, combined with a lack of fluids, plus excessive sweating, which compounds the problem with loss of salts and electrolytes, adding in high temperatures, where the body is unable to cool itself effectively to its essential functioning temperature, it closed down, sodium transfer is very important LOL
Looking back, there were signs I should have acted on; during the long, hot climb I had blurred vision, foggy thinking, extreme tiredness and lucid thoughts, dreams but while awake. In hindsight, I should have stopped, seeked shade, drank more fluids and taken on board more carbs and electrolytes or quit the ride and returned to the centre. Now, I try to plan my rides with enough food (easy to consume and stomach while riding I find the Decathlon carbohydrate bars made with almonds good to keep energy up and SIS gel sachets with electrolytes) and fluids (spring water 500 mililitres for every 1 hour, with electrolyte tablet) although I still get caught out, as I did on Tuesday when I rode 5+ hours to cover 45kms of the Skyline Trail at Afan in 21 degrees C, and I had to miss the final section to get back off the mountain as I didn't consider the amount of fluids and food I had sufficient. A blast down the long fire road was my safety net. Looking forward to watching more of your sunny rides.
You're absolutely right, Julie should not only carry more calories but should consume it too. She eats very little anyway and doesn't increase food and drink for rides. That said, she does get through more fluid than me on a ride, the amount of times I get back and my bottle is still full... 🚴♂🤔
@@WheelersAtLarge Bottle full at end of rides is what I was doing in 2018. Now, lesson learnt, even if we have to stop several times to dive behind a bush and even Zoe, who isn't a fan of wild wees, will drink and just stop when nature calls.
Wow just catching up with you guys I’ve been away for few days (London) was hot there too 😅.
What wonderful views and hills, glad we still get our yeehaas 😊 might be too hot there for me tho phew.
I thought I would never say this but here goes... The heat here is different. And I'm the type that hides from the heat at home. Or maybe it's because we've paid to be here so we're bloody well gonna ride 🤣🤣 Thanks Michelle
@@WheelersAtLarge I don’t do heat either so Id never cope with the heat you are cycling in I’d need a wagon following with water 😂
Love the Cap Formentor ride especially when they close the roads to traffic. Top tip on the baggage carousel. Take every opportunity to fill the bottles and stay hydrated. As you say the Mountain Roads there are fantastic for riding, but there are also really nice rides out to Sa Pobla, Campanet, Selva which are not as hilly to give nice variety. Enjoy being out there.
Cheers Mark! 👍Should have filled my bottle at the lighthouse for sure🙄🙂
We rode back from l'luc through Caimari and Campanet today, very pretty ride and not as hilly 👌👍😍🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️
That's a bucket list ride for me
Hey Ben, we'd love to join you when the time comes...
@Wheelers At Large I try not to bonk on the ride too 😅
Well done both.
Thank you Suresh...👍
Awesome ride guys, felt for Julie though. We like most go end of April beginning of May to avoid all that traffic and the really high temperatures, it makes the experience even greater! Don't feel you have to do all the climbs as there's plenty of flattish rides like Petra etc. that are just as memorable. Looking forwared to your next adventure 👍
Thanks Mark 👍😀 it's a lovely place for cycling and that is definitely my longest climb! 🥵I stubbornly was not gonna stop! 🤯🥴I will be drinking and fueling better from now on 🤞 🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️
The irony is you go away during the only dry sunny weather we've had in Bournemouth this year.
Too true stevan ❤ 🙂🙄It was 95°f (35°c) today on the Coll de femenia climb! Blooming hot 🥵 in any language 🔥and the roads didn't have pot holes 🤣😅😂🤣
enjoy 🙂
Cheers Paul. It's been great so far, it's like a mini cycling adventure with a fantastic backdrop
Great to see you abroad Wheelers. I’ve done that climb so often on an indoor trainer so I know how tough that can be. One day I’ll get to do for real hopefully. Well done Julie on making happen, sticking to it and recovering. You’re a legend!
I hope you do Neil, be interesting to know how it compares in effort to the real thing.👍 The views are something else of course😁
Thanks Neil! 😊👍I wasn't gonna stop until I got to the top! 🗻It was a tad warm 🥵 though 🙄🤣
Just ran into this channel! This looks so much fun! I hope To do that next year! Thanks for the vid!
Our first ever ride in Majorca and real belter at that 👍go early to beat the cars...
Always carry salt with you, especially in the heat!
You're right. We need to get in the habit of carrying and consuming more on the rides. We get away with it at home but this is another level. Cheers David 👍
@Wheelers At Large usually 1g of pink himilayan or redmond salt to every litre always serves me well, and carry some spare just incase.
Lovely to see you guys out in Mallorca. We were there a few weeks back and did that same ride. Fab views. If you're looking to go inland there's a lovely route clockwise from Pollenca to Alcudia, Campanet, up the climb to Sa Batalla (beautiful climb with cafe at the top) and then back to Pollenca via the Col de Femenia and a lovely descent. It's a fab island and hope you get hooked too. As per other posts, stay hydrated and enjoy the ride.
Cheers David, we did a very similar ride in reverse yesterday, very picturesque and a coffee stop at the Lluc Monastery 👍
@@WheelersAtLarge The square in Petra is very attractive too. 😀👍
Nice one! That’s one ride I never got to do when I went to Majorca, so I’ve got to go back just to do it. At one point Julie looked like I felt at the top of the Nufenen pass in Switzerland. One minute you feel absolutely fine, the next minute, you don’t know what day it is. I’m glad she recovered before the descent.
Thanks Darren! 👍It was so hot 🔥🥵 and like your said, was not a pleasant experience.! I was actualy sat in the queue at the kiosk 🤣 a llovely Cyclist (Phil Smith) bought me a bottle of water.... My saviour! 😍
@@julie-wheelersatlarge you didn’t look week at all, so I’m glad you managed to recover so quickly. I’m not very good in the heat, but saying that, I’m dead jealous you’re getting to ride in Majorca. Enjoy!
Thank you for your kind help 😊, it was amazing cycling up the hill , will defiantly be coming back again
Happy to have helped... Thanks for commenting 👍
Puerto Pollensa was the favorite place of Agatha Christie. She had a good taste.
Yes she did indeed... Our favourite place on the island too 👍
@@WheelersAtLarge With the upcoming spiritual awakening people will discover what the magical and legendary Mallorca really is and they will faint =).Having an open mind is vital and a blessing.Humanity had to have a spiritual awakening for a reason: to know the truth/real history.Paganism/nature/love/truth wins out.
Well according to an online translator thing Yee Ha in Spanish is ¡Sí ja! Hmmm... don't think that is going to work quite so well...
Glad you were ok again Julie and able to carry on. Not a nice feeling at all.
Congratulations on the new bike too Mike, looks a beauty!
Bonkers Mick, talk about impulse purchase..! Until 2 weeks ago the Giant was coming to Mallorca... Fortunately I was able to tweak it in time, it was so uncomfortable for first few rides I really was having buyers remorse... 🚴♂️😱
Can't see Madam going with '¡Sí ja!' 🤣
@@WheelersAtLarge Ah well, impulse buys are always the best ones, so glad you were able to adjust it to suit you ok!
Did that ride last week. Still buzzing 😂
Yes amazing, Julie wants to ride it again as she didn't feel she did it justice. Cheers for commenting 👍
Looks lovely there in the sunshine! Sorry to see Julie bonk, as it’s not a pleasant sensation. Hopefully Mike will take better care of you now Julie?? But you do have to tell him if you are feeling weird? 😊👍 Stay safe and enjoy the trip.
Thanks Steve! 🙂👍 I do need to be better at sharing and let him know when I've run out of energy😉 we've been married for a long time you'd think he'd just know🤣🤔😅
Thanks Steve... If you could tell Julie to eat more food before and on rides please. She doesn't listen to me 🤣🤣 In truth I think the continuous inclines and their regularity took Julie by surprise. Mallorca looks great in videos but that's only half the story.
Great scenery and video. Perhaps too much too soon when in the heat - full marks Julie for perseverance. Heat exhaustion is not good.
You're right... We did try but there was nothing at home to properly prepare us. Strangely Julie usually copes with the heat better than me but not this time. I wasn't ready for that...
Well done Mike and Julie, very nice ride, take it steady in the heat were not used to climbing in high temperatures.
Pleased to see you found tunnels and got your yee haa fix.
Enjoy your holiday
Thank you Terry, yes the heat is different here and the air seems thinner somehow, the headwind feels light and fluffy while at home headwind feels thick and soupy (I think that's what I mean 😁) I wasn't expecting it to be such a different experience.
Stunning riding venue, far removed from HGC territory! Great effort by both and time for some chivalry along the way to help a fellow cyclist. Take care out there, make memories and enjoy the adventure. (Shaun)
Yes, amazing... As you might imagine, I'm not really built for this type of riding but the location is amazing which more than makes up for it.👍🚴
Looks fabulous - enjoy.
Steve... It is...! If a little lumpy for someone of my manly build 🤣🤣
With hindsight, it's easy to say - plan using your weakest link. Extra climbing, extra heat and different diet... Happy ending though!
Thank you Felix... Yes we have nothing at home to prepare us for this, however I don't think Julie was completely aware of the challenges Mallorca has on offer😁🚴👍 she does now and is better prepared mentally...
Teamwork Mike?
Haha Chris 😂😁
Had to be some yeehas 😂😂
I managed to find a place to get a Yeehaa in Paul! 😁 Was a lovely place to ride! 👍🚴🏻♀️😎🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️🚴🏻♀️
I don't know...can't take Julie any bleeding where, stealing the show😉😜😉
You're not wrong Michael... Talk about a diva, she wasn't just helped by another cyclist, she was SAVED! Can you believe it 🤣🤣
@@WheelersAtLarge we'll let it slide, Mike, because we like her 😉 see not all scousers are bad, well not this one anyway 😉😜😉
How long you guys out there? I arrive on Saturday, would be good to ride with you both?
Hope your travelling went well. We're here until Wednesday AM, riding most days but no solid plans, taking it day by day.. Be great to say Hi!...👍
@@WheelersAtLarge sorry, I wasn’t clear. Saturday next week ☹️. Shame we couldn’t say hi, but I might steal some of your routes👍
No problem, I didn't note when comment was made😁 Routes are not hard to find around here but you're welcome to help yourself to ours from Strava or Komoot...👍 Cheers Duncan
How did you find it taking your own bikes?
Not too bad in the end. Learnt a bit about how to pack them better for the return. Julie's bike has a clunk now but no signs of damage so could be a coincidence. Bike maintenance day today so I may find out more. We booked a Jet2 package and added bikes as sports equipment so very straightforward getting them on the plane and once I knew which belt at Palma (asked the rep) very easy putting it on the coach for transfer. We are at Hotel Duva which has bike stands, washing machine/dryer, bike wash area and locked storage. So far so good.👍
You guys seem to wear casual clothes 😊
Cheers for commenting 👍 I rode BMX as a kid so the road gear has never really appealed or seemed necessary. The shoes are SPD and I do wear full lycra from time to time but not often...
Drink more water, you need two bottles for a ride in heat
Yes I think two bottles would be good but the hardest thing seems to be remembering to drink, need to make it habit some how👍
If you are thirsty it's to late. Great video again
@@WheelersAtLargeif you are using something like a Garmin head unit set the drink alarm or a time alarm and it will nag you 😅
