A general rule of thumb is to drink filtered liquids with an unbroken seal, whether from a can or a bottle. Even if the water the ice comes from is filtered, it can still become naturally contaminated. So, while it's not foolproof, going without ice from public places can help keep you from catching something and getting sick.
