In this installment of Essential Classical Music, I cover the best recordings of Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 4 & 8. This video is taken from my larger video covering more of the major symphonies and their best recordings. Featured conductors include Karajan, Furtwängler, and Klemperer.

An old axiom comes to mind; "If Beethoven, then Furtwängler." Other fine choices, too, Walter in particular.

Hello, so glad you mentioned the Markevitch! My current favorite 5th is in that set as well. Otherworldly. Thank you for your videos!

I must confess that the 4th is my favorite Beethoven symphony. So very inventive and melodic, but still pushing the boundaries of the classical form. It is absolutely the natural extention of Haydn. I love Walter, but my all time faves are Kondreshin, once available in the US on a Melodiya/Seraphim LP, Ansermet (surprise!!) on Eloquence CD (I have the original issue open reel tape), and Monteux.

are you familiar with any of the recordings of the Liszt transciptions of Beethoven's symphonies? the Katsaris recording of the 8th (and others) is wild!

I have always liked the fourth symphony, perhaps more than its more famous siblings. Could this be related to my taste for the music of Joseph Haydn?

For the 8th Symphony, it's got to be Szell and Cleveland. They have the absolute precision of ensemble this symphony requires, and Szell also doesn't miss the humor in the work. In the latest remasterings (both in the Szell Beethoven symphony box as well as the later "big" Szell box) the sound is superb.
