  • We're talking all things Royal Ascot this week as Maddy Playle and Peter Scargill join Tom Kerr on the Front Page.
Front and centre is the recent debate over whether Royal Ascot is losing its lustre for international runners unimpressed by its prize-money. The panel also discusses a remarkable pre-Ascot spending spree by a rising force in the sport, John Gosden's tough start to the season and the big clashes at next week's festival.
Also on the agenda is the exit of Jockey Club chief executive Nevin Truesdale - the panel chews over his record at the top and asks what sort of person might take over the role later in the year.
Finally, we follow up a Chris Cook column which called for the BHA to ensure horses spend time in the pre-parade and parade rings, following concerns that racegoers who want to actually see racehorses are getting a raw deal.

(I'm leaning more towards Maddy & Tom on this one, sorry Peter!) At some racecourses I have attended the pre-parade ring doesn't get used much. I assume there are rules & regulations that state when a trainer's horse can bypass the pre-parade (and the main parade? i.e. go down to post early). Is there any data collected on the number of horses entering the pre-parade & main parade rings at each course? Are numbers, entering the parade rings, lower at certain racecourses and are horses from particular yards more likely to be saddled up in the racecourse stables, not enter the pre-parade ring and make a late entry into the main parade ring? Personally not being able to see horses in the pre-parade ring, and only briefly in the main parade ring, deters me from attending some racecourses, along with lack of decent weather (rainy conditions are not ideal for watching horses pre-race) which you can't do anything about! But there again I've been following horse racing for a long time so my views might be antiquated/ no longer in tune with the modern racegoer.

This must be the worst batch of horses Gosden has had for over 20 years so it’s not Shoemarks fault that they’ve started slowly

True, there's too many wanting to blame the jockey when it's clear that Gosden doesn't have that good horses this year.

Couldnt care less if the international set come...you have zero idea on how form stacks up and what the prices should be and what constitutes value....on the international stage we may well be 2nd or 3rd division but as long as the racing is competitive and the odds reflect that why is it such a problem if the latest japanese yank or aussie superstar is there

Japan is not the best in the world, in either horses or prize money. The US prize money from claiming races to G1s is 2nd to none. On dirt, there is no match for the US. Japan's top dirt horses come from, ultimately, American sires, also. On turf, yes, Japan has overtaken Europe & Australia.

The quality of European turf horses is still the best in the world despite the inferior prize money. The US have a lot more money and people to input into racing, for me i dont see how running pretty much the same races/horse over 4f-7f on dirt is that exciting. Racing is far more interesting with different surfaces/distances in Europe. Add in jump racing and its a much better spectacle than anything the US can offer.

Maddie, what it it with shows like this thars always negative when it comes to British racing.
Let's get it right. The Yank horses have NEVER been good enough. That's why they dominate sports thats not worldwide. NFL, baseball, and dirt racing, although that's under threat from the arab nations.
Average G2 horses go to the US and dominate the turf races. Hong Kong and Japan, we know why you promote their racing, but ask yourself this how many Arcs have they won.
Just like aussie races, the majority of horses that dominate won't do it in Europe.
It's not about always about the money. it's the prestige, that's why people still pay the humdreds of thousands to by horses that might win a 4K maiden.
You say, like many other shows, racing is doomed in Britian, then in the same sentence mention numerous owners forking out mega fortunes.
Here is a suggestion the richest races in the world, with the exception of the US, they all have something in common. They dont have numerous meetings every day they have usually a major festival once a year. We have many race meetings each day and a festival every 2 weeks.
Go ask all the mega rich who forkout fortunes on horses what races they would win. No one remembers who wins the majority of G1s throughout the world Royal Ascit and the big G1 races people do.
Maddie, all i heard from you and shows like this was how crap Cheltenham is now its Royal Ascots turn.
I can only guess the trips abroad and bonuses given by those who would benefit British racing being doomed are playing a major role in peoples opinions.
