It is his description of Jesus' role as a rabbi, or "master," of Jewish oral traditions, a teacher of the Kabbalah, and a practitioner of a Galilean form of Judaism that emphasized direct communication with God, however, that casts an entirely new light on the origins of Christianity. By placing Jesus within the context of his times, Chilton uncovers truths lost to history and reveals a new Jesus for the new millennium.

The next time you interview Dr. Chilton, Jacob, it would be interesting to ask him why he named Barnabas (not one of the 12, nor referred to as an apostle in Acts) as an "apostle," and how he defines the apostles (e.g., how many were there, in his view).
Excellent first question, which I am not so clear on the Dr’s view. I think he answered in the affirmative but would have liked a little more clarity.

Distinguished guest - - however, 21 c.e. seems like an extremely early date for the death of John the Baptist, which would result in an estimate of a 9+ year ministry of Jesus, would it not?
I am amazed by Bruce Chilton's sleight of hand. His presentation reflects traditional Christian understanding of the origins of Christianity or, better, the Jesus cult. He treats NT material as historically reliable, ignores the possible influence of the Jewish Wars on the NT and speaks about "the new faith" immediately after the death of its idol Jesus. He places Christian origins parallel to emerging rabbinic Judaism, a trick that enables Christians to portray their religion as "another legitimate continuation of the biblical story of Israel" - instead of the ideology of Israel's enemy. This is a post-holocaust Christian apologetics and a denial of everything we know of Christian origins and the deeply anti-Jewish overall tone of the NT.
Yet, he calls his book "Rabbi Jesus" when the term "rabbi" clearly belongs in (proto-)rabbinic Judaism. He tries to rebaptise Q as "the Mishna of Jesus".
Chilton's deception is a scholarly version of "Messianic Judaism" which is just evangelical Christianity with a tallith, a skullcap and Chanukka candles. Chilton is just traditional Christian self-understanding with some "Jewish" jargon thrown in.
Father, forgive him because he probably is totally unaware of what he does.

Josephus refers to Jesus as Christ which no believing Jew would do. Jospehus's texts are very lkely to have been tampered with by Christians. If the references to Christ in Josepehus are indeed interlopations, then there is pretty well nothing left of an account of Jesus except by Christians centuries later and the question has to be asked-did Jesus even exist?

"Jesus follows an itenerary that seems implausible" err, Jesus is doing all kinds of things, period, that are implausible in Mark. If a man can walk on water how much easier is it for to walk 20 miles in a day.
I should take the point that Q and mark are saying at a deep level the same sayings alot of the time. If we take the point that Q was earlier and more true to Evyon belief, then it would appear that Mark is purposefully and liberally reinterpreting Q for theological reasons. We dont know of mark had direct access to Q, but it seems likely that he had access to something either an oral source or some paraphrasing.
