Can't believe I'm hearing this, thanks for sharing this and transporting me back half a century, lovely to share with a new generation who will keep his writing alive.
I remember him very well from the '60's. I lived near him for a period during his 'missing years', often wonding what was going on in his life, or even if he was alive. In a synchronistic turn of events, I got to know Heather Woods from the Young Tradition, who often wondered the same.
Jackson C. Frank has become my favorite artist over the last half-year. Although his early life unfolded 80 miles from where I live, I hadn't heard of Jackson or his music until recently, and I'm glad I found him!
I cannot believe this recording has appeared - I remember the whole thing, the session, what happened before, meeting Jackson at Kent University folk club and playing guitar all night with him after ... meeting YT too, and having a lot to do with Royston after that, Chris Hardy
LiTTLe MACHiNe Hello Chris, we are making a documentary about Chris and we were thinking about meeting you someday ! Would you agree ? My collègue Damien Dupont will contact you !
Hi Chris, it is fantastic you found the post! I am sure there are many of us who would love to hear your remembrances of Jackson and this show. Thanks!
Did you do the work on the original? If so many thanks - the quality is astounding. Where did you find it, and what led you to search for it? I can recall quite a lot about those months .. I was at University so unable to be in London a lot, where Jackson was based. One interesting thing - he had an early copy of the Band's 'Big Pink' album, which he was rightly convinced was an innovative masterwork. He sounds fantastic on this BBC programme. Fabulous guitar sound ..
Hi Chris, no I did not work on the original. What I know about the origin of the recording is in the notes above to the video. However, I can give you some Jackson Frank back story that you might find interesting. If you don't mind, I will email you at the address you gave above.
This version of I Want To Be Alone is fantastic. RIP Jackson, may you get the recognition you deserve some day, hopefully the upcoming documentary will show the world what you went through, and what you accomplished.
agreed! I've been learning it on guitar and now hearing this version it has so many novel little touches that make it even more beautiful. Really amazing how easy and relaxed he makes it sound
here are all moments where Jackson C Frank is speaking during a BBC radio show "Nightride", which he hosted. 5:53 He explains what his song "I want to be alone" means. 11:55 He explains what his song "Golden Mirror" means. 16:35 Comment about second guitar supporting him during Golden Mirror 21:01 He explaing what his song "Just Like anything" means. 25:50 He thanks.
I wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t for Bert jansch on telly showing c frank I was changed man when I saw Jackson for the fist time and his life’s story hurts when ever I think of frank he never sold out that’s for sure
Life can deal some cruel twists and turns ... School fire , 30% body burns , trauma, $100.000 payout in early 60's. Travel , buying cars, meeting John Kay ( Steppenwolf) , traveling to the UK to buy more cars, early 60's folk scene. Meeting Sandy Denny, becoming an item for a while , folk clubs London ... Meeting Paul Simon ...album produced , doesn't sell , back to the US... Lives in Woodstock, not well , treatment , institutions , medication , back to London ... Sitting on a park bench , shot in the eye for no reason ...blinded. Lives on handouts , lives in an elderly home , weight gain due to trauma and damaged thryroid gland ... Respected by others , ahead of his time , great influence to many. Today younger musicians hold him in high esteem ... Only made one album in 65 ... Died in 1999. 'Life can deal some cruel twists and turn's'
This is an amazing find. Jackson Frank had a life that was like a sad folk song tale. One can’t imagine the kind of pain he’d had to carry around after the Cleveland Hill School fire that killed 15 of his classmates and left Frank badly scarred, both physically and mentally. He was inspiration for what is possibly the saddest song on record, Sandy Denny’s “Next Time Around.” Frank was Denny’s first adult boyfriend, she bought the liquor that helped him get through his first recording session. Her life was also short and full of sadness.
@@Twin_Peaks_Outdoors Yes. In the first stanza, the lyrics are The house it was built by some man in a rhyme, But whatever came of his talented son? Who wrote me a dialogue set to a tune? The House That Jack Built, his talented son. Jack son. Jackson. Dialogue is the title of one of his songs.
How precious to have stumbled on this recording of Jackson C Frank and the Young Tradition. Sad that Royston Wood died after a car accident in 1990 and Peter Bellamy commited suicide in 1991. I remember catching Royston Wood and Heather Wood at folk festivals across the US and Canada. And My Name is Carnival is one of my Jackson all time favorites and I have seen Bert Jansch perform this song many many times as he did with Blues Run the Game and listening to poor Sandy Denny and Nick Drake doing Jackson C Frank materials including Milk and Honey. Jackson died in 1999.
Agreed! It is interesting to contrast this to his other 1968 radio broadcast on John Peel's Night Ride. That one is quiet, introspective and gains from a subtle world weariness. This one is more engaging, almost uplifting, but does not lose its lyrical potency.
This is a great piece of musical history. Jackson was considered something of a folk singing messiah in the 60s when he arrived in London. He was held in great respect by many artists, such as Bert Jansch and John Renbourne - this is the first live recording that I think I've heard.
A joyous day to have found this, Jackson C. Frank, such a great feeling to know you are here talking to me, singing this beautiful music, playing such wonderful guitar. ❤
I can’t believe I’m hearing this. I’m so glad he continues to be revered and respected. One hopes that somehow in the next world he receives all the love he never got in his lifetime.
What an amazing find! Great live performances of some of his finest songs. Interesting to hear his speaking voice as well. The only place I have ever heard him speak.
I can't thank you enough for posting this! I only discovered Jackson Frank four days ago. I was hooked the instant I heard his unbelievably beautiful voice.
I'm so glad that he's been gaining traction lately and that gems like this are being discovered. My favorite song being Dialogue and here it is in a completely different rendition of his own. Each time I hear this track I feel chills and this version gave me more.
Thank you this is awesome, listened to his album many times but this is even better. Found JCF by accident fairly recently, wish I had found him years ago.
WOW, Jackson sounds so good live. I've been listening to his album daily the last couple months & just came across this wonderful recording. My only grips is I wish he performed Milk & Honey.
Chris has made 1 solo album called to "Health to Your Hands" from 2008. He has been playing in a band called LiTTLe MACHiNe that adds music to famous poems. It works really well.
Very exciting to here this from the actually era itself, most kids my age have no idea about this. Anyways thanks for upload and tunes to sooth the soul.

Excellent archive material only diminished with the inclusion of that other distractiing less accomplished folk music the exception being the song about travelling to cornwall by Chris Hardy , reminiscent of Bert Jansch.

To everyone who suffered trauma in early life this music from Jack resonates with soul.

I think it is the best version, better than the 1965 album.

Agreed 1000000 pct.
The pacing of this version of 'I want to be alone' makes it really stand out in his catalogue of recorded work.
