      I'm so glad I could help! They are very cool droids. I'd like an R5-D4 one of these days.

    • @kurtsimonson6157
      @kurtsimonson6157 2 года назад +1

      @@outsider238 That would be especially cool, now that R5-D4 is back and made an appearance in the new live action series! Side note: I was thinking of getting a Droid Depot droid with a *clear* dome, and maybe putting a black blaster scar or two on the clear dome. I can picture in my mind how it would look, but my modeling days ended when I was ten years old, and adding that kind of detail might be too ambitious... but I digress. Any thoughts or suggestions on weathering a *clear* droid dome?

    • @outsider238
      @outsider238  2 года назад +1

      @@kurtsimonson6157 Hmm.. that is a bit trickier with clear plastic. I would imagine using an airbrush to make the scorch marks would be the best way. Maybe some kind of dry brushing if you aren't using an airbrush. I've never had to weather clear parts thankfully. You'd have to sweep the airbrush or dry brush to give it a streaking kind of look where the blast took place. I'm not really sure since I haven't done it.

    • @kurtsimonson6157
      @kurtsimonson6157 2 года назад +1

      @@outsider238 well that confirms my thoughts! When my daughter was little, she found my old Star Wars and GI Joe toys and loved them! It gave me an excuse to dabble in weathering techniques- I painted the GI Joe APC and scuffed it up a little, and even what little I did required some investment and skill. I'll keep it simple lol

    Great work! Do you think that Testor's CreateFX Black Enamel Stain would be a good substitute for the Tamiya Panel Line Color? It sounds similar...

    • @outsider238
      @outsider238  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I've never tried it. If it's an inky, thin, black paint, it probably would work the same. I know the Tamiya panel line paint can sometimes react to certain plastics so that's why I coated it with the gloss coat first. It helps protect the plastic and makes the paint ooze through the panel lines better. Not sure if the Testors is the same. You might gloss coat it first just in case. If you use the artist's chalk for the rest of it, dull coat it before you use the pastels. It'll give the pastels something to stick on to when applying them. I hope this helps! Good luck in weathering your droid! 😁

      @VanDanmark 5 лет назад +1

      @@outsider238 I've used acrylics in the past to weather models, but I really like the look of this so I'm going to try your method for my droid. it really looks great. I'll probably practice on an old R2 unit from the 90s to test the method before moving on to the Droid Depot unit. thanks for the tips.

    • @outsider238
      @outsider238  5 лет назад +1

      @@VanDanmark That's a great idea to try it on a test droid. I like the pastels because I tend to have better control with how much goes on and where. That brush was very helpful in applying the pastels. I hope you can find it or something very similar. Also, when using the lighter fluid to remove the excess Tamiya panel line paint, I used Q tips. Be careful not to rub too hard taking off the excess paint. Otherwise it'll start to remove the paint on the droid. Put at least 2 or 3 coats of gloss on before hand to help prevent that. I'm so glad I could help! I hope your droid turns out awesome!

    need some help .. getting my droid but he is in Black.. want to spray the paints Yellow .. any thing or help .. do I need to spray clear lacquer first then the yellow paint ? do they have the panel paint in gray not black to show better ?after the panel .. hit him with Dual coat ? I am totally new to all of this help

    • @outsider238
      @outsider238  3 года назад +1

      So are you painting some of the panels yellow? If so, you'll have to mask off those areas to make the lines straight and sharp. You won't need to put a clear coat on to paint the yellow on. I only used a gloss coat so that the panel line paint would have the "capillary" action work better. Plus it gives it a layer of protection when removing the excess panel line paint with the lighter fluid. Then I gave it a few coats of Dull Coat to seal it in. They do make a panel line paint in brown and I think gray. I hope this helps.

    Why did you clear coat before the weathering?

    • @outsider238
      @outsider238  4 года назад +1

      The gloss coat allows the panel line paint to easily flow into the crevices. It also helps to protect the paint on R2 from rubbing off so easily when you use the lighter fluid to remove the excess. Then when you apply the dull coat, that gives the pastels something to stick on to when applying the pastels.

    It sad that you can’t make it to the parks, there are many different droids to choose from when building your own. There’s R3, R4, R5, and even R6. Well, if you’d like one, let me know I’ll build it for you, just tell me the pieces you’d like, and I’ll ship it to you. Unfortunately, the custom droid don’t qualify for my AP discount...so I’m sorry for that. I’m not flipping. Just getting a unique droid to you. I’d like to see what you do to it.

      Thank you so much for the offer! The only other one I'd consider is R5-D4 since I've always had a soft spot for him. Poor fellow with his bad motivator! But the weathering would pretty much be the same on him since everything is the same except his head and colors. If I decide to get R5, I'll certainly let you know. Thank you again! 😁

    • @toady525
      @toady525 5 лет назад +1

      I always loved R5-D4, since I saw a New Hope as a kid, I was amazed that there were other astromechs besides R2. However, for R5-D4, there is a red R5 dome, and as for the body and legs, I can make them with blue parts to make it just like R5-D4. They retail for $99.99, or $107.70 with tax included. Whenever, just let me know, I was there yesterday. I build an R5 unit. However my R5 has a blue dome head. White body and blue panels. Looks sick but I’m sure some weathering will make him pop!

    You had to buy it online, I hate to think of the price. The shop at the park charges $100,( ridiculous) and thats not counting the cheap stickers that peel off in about a week, and the over priced back pack that you have to customize to make it even look like a Star Wars product. As to the work you did to the Droid "Amazing" it looks ten times better than before.👍👍👍
