According to the information I have read, the earthquake struck at about 09:40 local time, and it was 3 waves. The first was the Primary wave which is a compression and dilation wave - think of a sound wave because it acts in the same way. The Secondary wave also known as the 'shaking' or in Portugese & Spanish as the 'Tornillo,' or screw, shook the buildings causing structures to collapse. There was a third wave - the surface wave. Gaiola Pombalina realised the tornillo was what had caused the damage and set about designing structures to withstand them. To this end he built full scale examples and had troops march around them. The design that withstood the marching and stamping was incorporated in to the new buildings.
