question. im interested in becoming a hotshot. ive heard that they rarely hire people for hotshot crews in their first year. anybody got any info on getting your foot in the door?

just apply, most crews will hire new people but in small quantity. You can also apply for a engine crew for a season and move to a hotshot crew. If you do apply to a engine crew, apply for one that also is near a hot shot crew (same forest agency) and bust your ass at learning/working/and just being a good person. From there word of mouth will take over and you ll be wanted. Go to the hotshot crews you want to work on in person before/after you apply, follow up on applications. Don't get down if you are passed on, someone will give you a chance and from there you can prove you are a badass or not.... being a hotshot was the most fun I had

also, start looking now, most crews look to hire now (October/November/December) and run your ass off everyday, I was once told "you can get to the top of the mountain, but how you operate after that point is what makes you..... "

just thought of a couple other things. what is the schedule like?? from everything ive read you can expect to be away for up to 20 days at a time, then back at base for 2-3 days. ive seen that a lot of crews get a ton of overtime during a busy fire season, so im guessing you can make pretty good money doing this too

I was on the crew that burned over on the Brewer fire, we had some true hero's, but we had one girl on our crew that was playing games with at least two male friends, one of them tried to go to her as we were being burnt over he sustained third degree burns over one quarter of his body, they drove us back to Rapid City hospital treated as for smoke inhalation and then determined that we had no pts syndrome that we just wanted to get drunk and go back out on the firing line

Ovidio Jimenez Reducing fuel loads, making barriers between brush so fire is contained and covering a lot of ground quickly in order to do it.

This is the typical IHC video. Video is great, showing a hardworking crew, but all accompanied by terrible hard rock music. I just turn off the sound and watch the rest.
