    Jerry Bergonzi, with whom I studied, used to do similar fun/funny reharmonizations including, “A Train” in C but the 2nd chord changed to C maj9 with melody returning back to scale degree natural 5 on the 2nd chord (!)… we would laugh so hard !
    Another is, “A Train” in C (original melody notes) but the 2nd chord is E maj9#11 or E 9#11 hahaha 😝
    **Thank you Mr Anderson & Mr Pollack for another great video and insights.
    I can’t wait to start my late-in-life sax journey with you; I didn’t study sax with Bergonzi (decades ago) I was working on several graduate degrees at NewEngCnsrvtry in composition and performance (not sax).

    Its always struck me as curious that the melody of GS is simply (mostly) a descending major 7th arpeggio which minors. Yet if you try to play over that it never works.

    Great collaboration! My favorite sax teachers! Nice tune. Still recognizable as "Giant Steps", but a bit more "beboppy" and with an almost singable melody! It just needs a good text. But it doesn't sound very Coltrane-like.

    #makeGiantStepsEasier - I am ready to take this new Giant step! That arrangement was spot on, Jamie! Glad to hear you did another co-op video with another great RUclips sax mentor. I miss them! Hope others follow suit. FYI - You left about a minute of blank space at the end. "They'll tell you I'm insane - But I've got a blank space, baby - And I'll write your name(s)" (thanks Taylor Swift).

    You and Dave sound great as always, but I don't understand why you changed the melody. That makes it a different song. At that tempo there's no problem playing right melody - even in B!

    • @GetYourSaxTogether
      @GetYourSaxTogether  3 месяца назад

      Yeah, I think you kinda missed the concept of this video? 🤣

    • @davidprince1590
      @davidprince1590 3 месяца назад

      @@GetYourSaxTogether Not really. I fully understand diatonic, but the emphasis seemed to be that Giant Steps is too hard at the John Coltrane speed and in the key of B. Simply slowing it down takes care of that. Changing the key and/or the tempo doesn't change the essence of the song.
      "In this week's lesson I take the infamous Giant Steps and make it, easier!" - Changing the melody makes it a different song. It doesn't make playing Giant Steps easier because you're no longer playing Giant Steps.
      Just my opinion...
