I’m so used to hearing SMW Soundchip covers of other songs in SMW ROM hacks that it took me over a minute to realise the second level is just the generic castle theme.
I have a bad habit of forgetting words. Anyways... Hey y'all. I want to make a very special shoutout to all of the community members of SMW Central that were involved with this hack. Whether it was making an entry to VLDC, judging the entries, or even just contributing to the compilation this whole TAS wouldn't even exist with such a wonderful and creative community! Looking forward to what the upcoming VLDC 14 will have in store.
Love the VLDC TAS videos, hope to see more. They are fantastic as background noise for working around the house or just sitting around eating something. Awesome to see some of the incredibly creative levels this hack and all VLDCs have to offer.
All of the yearly Annual Vanilla Level Design Contest hacks are truly some of the best Mario experiences one can have in the modern age. Amazing music in them too!
1:32:30 is this scene with the multiple Marios supposed killing Koopas supposed to be a reference to a scene from an old Looney Tunes short where Daffy does a lot of wacky stuff all at once?
This is more kaizo level design tho than anything LOL! When I think "vanilla", I think levels designed like the official Mario World. Balanced, offering a fair challenge and fun to play through, this is kinda hard all the way through LOL!
I just despise how the P-Switches override the music. One of the main reasons I like to watch custom Super Mario World levels is for the custom music the level designers might have used. I especially like it when I recognize the song. (Seriously, how many other people would recognize that Addams Family: Fester's Quest sewer song?) And then a P-Switch gets hit and the music gets overridden. And then reset. And by then the player (almost always a TAS runner) has nearly finished the stage. I wish that design choice of the P-Switch had never been made.
...So, am I the only one left who still believes that "vanilla level" = "you used Lunar Magic and nothing else to make the hack"? SMW Central's been stretching the definition of "vanilla level" for over a decade now, but this hack, with levels that look like they came from some of the site's Kaizo hacks, is a particularly bad offender. D:
This Easter 2024, remember that Jesus was not a zombie. He was not mindless, nor did he consume anyone. Nor was he a ghoul or a wight. Although his soul and intellect were intact, he was not a rotting corpse. He was not a vampire. While he transubstantiated wine into blood, He never drank it from a person. Jesus was not a ghost or a wraith. He was corporeal and still had his wounds. It is clear. Jesus was a lich. A lich is created when a powerful magician or king striving for eternal life uses spells or rituals to bind his soul to his animated corpse and thereby achieves immortality. Liches are depicted as being clearly cadaverous, their bodies still bearing the wounds they received before their death. Liches often have the power of necromancy, which allows them to bring the dead back to life.
(31:11) There's my level! Watching this TAS blaze through it was fun!
(34:50) MOON!!!

+3.5 hours of a Non-kaizo hack TASed is a rare moment
The vast majority of these seem like they might as well be Kaizo if I'm being real
So many of these levels are aesthetically pleasing. I love it !

Ah, nothing says "vanilla level" like relying on obscure game engine behaviour and taking three hours to beat
yeah!
Honestly after 12 of these with up to 150 levels each I am surprised there are still any ideas left!
