- Mississippi River Lock & Dam 18 at Gladstone IL, near Burlington IA.
On this day we see a 15 barge tow that is split in half to traverse the lock.
This is attempting to show with some detail how this is done.
The first nine barges are pushed into the lock, they are then disconnected and raised in the lock.
A winch then pulls them through to clear the lock.
Next the towboat and remaining six barges enter and are raised.
Finally, everything is connected back together and the tow exits to continue northbound.
Wonderful video!
Great to see how the tow is split up in the smaller lock and dams.
I'm usually in chat at Lock 19 Keokuk.
Thank you!
Take care 🌸
Fascinating. I've always wanted to see how a tow was split in a lock. Thank you for posting this!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Are the first 9 hooked up to a pulley system??
Thank you for the time to put this together.
GREAT CAMERA POSTION IDEAL.
Man , lesson to those engines BE STILL MY HEART
How cool to see that! What timing that Quincey and her barge were also there that day on her way south...
Yeah it was quite a pleasant surprise to see that. Ill also do a video of the crane and Quincy soon. It's hard to realize that actual scale of things, that crane is very impressive in person.
Wish it was live , like at lock 19.
Yeah its a nice facility, would be a good webcam place.
I’ve been to that lock twice.
Are you going to upload the two that went right before this one? I was there that day. I wanted to show my family the ones i watched.
Hi, Good to hear from you. There will be a video of the crane coming through which I think was before you arrived. There will also be one with the Michael Poindexter and 4 barges, I don't have any video of the City of Joliet, with the chemical barges, which was just before this tow though.
Well that took some time to do 😅😅😅😅😅
The river is higher between 18 and 19 than 17 and 18?
I don't think so. I'm not sure what they use for benchmarks for the river levels.
What is the power source that moves the first part out of the lock
They use a winch to pull the first 9 barges out. Look for the winch under the small square roof, it sits at an angle near the upper lock doors. Also notice the angled yellow caution lines where the cable crosses the walkway.
Thanks, i wondered that myself.
Do you have any live cmaer on RUclips
No, I don't sorry.
How long can the boats be in the lock
As long as necessary to get everything through. For a split tow about 2 hours is pretty common.
Как первую часть состава из шлюза вывели ? Лебёдками ?
Да лебедка их тянет.
