    I just stumbled upon this channel and I felt a strange kinship with that soothing voice - reminded me of my uncle far away in Canada. Then I read in the comments below that this great artist has passed away and strangely, I felt the loss quite tangibly. Such artists whose sharing and kindness exudes even as they speak, are rare to come by. May he rest in peace.

      I have a real aversion to speed paintings, they amuse but don't teach. I do edit mine so there is not too much dead time, cleaning brushes etc., or things that don't contribute to the lesson.

    I have a question. For a painting similar to this, which is a person and background, would it be easier to cover the person with masking fluid so you can first paint the background and then the person from 0, or would that make the person seem slightly out of the actual painting?

    • @grantwfuller
      @grantwfuller  8 лет назад +9

      that would be the correct method if the figures were lighter than the background. here the figures are darker so can be painted on top

    Great lesson as always Grant. I'm thinking that most hobby painters that don't have income from their artwork would probably feel that $99 per year is expensive as time for painting may not be as available in a family household to justify the cost. It's a great resource but it's too bad they've set the price so high. This would probably encourage hobby painters to go online and get ideas from the unlimited art sites available, even if they don't have the features this company does.

    • @grantwfuller
      @grantwfuller  8 лет назад

      Its good that you see some benefit. The alternative is to take your own photos. A good reference file is critical. Buy a camera, learn to set up a filing system so you can find them. Buy photo editing software to fix and crop (some free ones work OK, just learn to use them. And I still can't afford to go to all the locations I'd like to paint. So now if you're just starting out, $99 a year doesn't seem so bad when you can just order off the menu.

    • @45NCT
      @45NCT 8 лет назад

      I agree that if you are just starting out it's a good resource. It would be even better if they priced it similar to a magazine subscription and I think they would get a better response. I'm your age and I've been taking pictures for years and although there are places I've never been able to visit so I do see the value in the subscription. I never seem to be able to spend the time to paint because the honey-do list has to come first. I did buy your watercolour book "Watercolor A-Z" but it too is waiting to be explored. This winter I've decided to rearrange my priorities and painting will be at the top of the list. Every time you post another video I get re-inspired, so thank you for your efforts. I love your style and I think that is what I value most rather than trying to decide what to paint.

    • @grantwfuller
      @grantwfuller  8 лет назад +2

      I think, ideally, we should all take our own photos but I don't know anyone who files their photos every time they download, if at all. As a commercial artist, I was trained to keep a filing system, so I have a pretty good one on my computer but I still can't search the whole drive for a category of subjects. I need to go to a folder, where I have placed all photos in that category, ie; birds, boats, barns, and on and on. Each time I empty my camera, I sort and drop each photo into the right folder. I can see why beginners don't want to do that. I have learned to enjoy it but it takes a lot of time. I hope you get more time to paint this winter, even just the projects in the book. regards, Grant

      There is a wonderful website www.pmp-art.com (abbreviation stands for paint my photo), which is a collaboration between atrists and photographers and there are amazing people from both categories. I don't mean to undermine the promoted website, I'm sure it provides a lot of possibilities, but, unfortunately, I can't afford it at the moment and besides I am very beginner for it, so to me PMP was a great find for practice and it only requires signing up. Hope that helps and best of luck.
