It's something I ask myself every time a new episode airs. You simply can't watch this scene and think 'Well hey, those two are completely platonic and don't AT ALL find each other attractive.'

I love the absolute lack of shock on Jane's face when Maura says "I love you" - honestly, I think she knows Maura loves her, and she certainly loves Maura. She just doesn't want to define it or mention the sexual aspect, because that would mean "being a lesbian" which freaks her out.

Because Jane knows her brother and he's not stable and if they were to get into a relationship and broke up, that would put a strain on their friendship, because she would be torn between her brother and best-friend, If Tommy's character was more settled then it would be plausible.

Um, why does everyone think they are lesbians? When she said "I love you" she meant as a friend. I tell my best friend I love her all the time. We're not gay (not that there's anything wrong with being gay) we've just been best friends for years and have been through a lot. Of course we love each other! So, grow up people

I don't see why people try to put these two together? The writers will never put them as a couple because no prime time network show will accept gay lead charactors. And for people to make a fantasy of them as a couple lets writers and producers get away with giving gays and lesbians a fake couple on television. I mean Xena and Gabriel were more of a couple then these two. Gays and lesbians need to tell the producers to either make them a real couple like Nikki and Nora was or shove it.
Also very true as well as everything else that has been said. They are 'quite lovely' though the 'not straight' part of me, ok -- all of me, is as much grieved as charmed by it.

The reason why there is a lesbian subtext in the imagination of many fans of this show is because there are very few lesbian romances on American tv. Consequently whenever lesbians find a show that has a close & loving relationship between two attractive female characters of the same age there is a natural tendency to fantasize a romance between them. On Xena the fan's longing for a romance between Xena & Gabrielle was so strong as to result in the writers implying a romance. So,who knows...
Heck Xena was maintext by the end of the show. No one looks at their best friend like they did during some of those episodes.
