VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
How could one man possibly turn the mundane act of getting a new mini film fridge into a nearly 18-minute RUclips video? It’s what we in “the biz” call “letting it breathe.” Over-explain everything, keep the audience guessing with multiple plot twists, and throw in some Shyamalan-esque long-cuts. Really let those long pauses breathe. Let ‘em sink in. That’s how you keep ‘em riveted. That’s show biz, baby.
Or this video is about 13 minutes too long and this should have just been an Instagram reel. There’s really no way to know.
But yeah that’s what I’m doing in this video - getting/installing/modifying a small film fridge for all my medium format 120 analog photography film and large format photography sheet film (did you get that, RUclips Algorithm?). But this video isn’t just me throwing a fridge into a cabinet. No, sir. It’s got high-tech design, it’s got engineering challenges, complex electrical infrastructure, and fine wood working. Just call me Norm Abram, because I’m taking you down to the New Yankee Workshop with this one. We gonna build ourselves a nice little Adirondack chair.
Perhaps this video will give you some ideas for your own analog photography film storage solutions. Or perhaps not but at least you’ll get to spend 17 minutes, 28 seconds sharing a few chuckles with your old pal, Nick. Or perhaps it’ll make you finally decide to unsubscribe from my channel. Anything’s on the table at this point.
You still readin’? Fantastic.
Thanks for watching!

My thoughts on seeing this: "Do I really want to watch a video about a film fridge? I haven't had film in the fridge for a long time. But Nick probably will make it entertaining. I'll give it a shot." And, of course, I can say definitively this is the most enjoyable video I've ever seen about a film fridge. 😀
If I can even make it into the top ten of film fridge videos, I’ve done my job.
@@nickcarverphoto 🤣badass film fridge video!!
That little snap of the fingers and fail to cut to a full fridge of film got me rolling. Well played, awesome fridge. It's nice having your own place and your own space to customize as you like. :)
15:35 literally LOL. Ace Ventura “ONLY THISSS….”
Man I need a film fridge so badly, my girlfriend had been mad at me for about two years for taking up an entire salad drawer with my film
I’m familiar with that rage.
As a builder plasterer this is right up my alley! Great work Nick.
That is a great setup. I have an old small frig, no wheels, with all of my film in. I have never thought about checking the temperature but I know it is cold. Thanks, you gave me something else to do.
Both humorous and informational! My kinda channel. Subscribed!
Nah man, you didn't overthink this. This is just awesome!
One time FedEx came to the door rolling my box of very fragile stuff. And it said FRAGILE on it. Not sure where the common sense is sometimes. Great video!. No, film fridges are not exciting but you just gave me some ideas about how to manage my fridge better. My fridge sits out in my barn and its kind of a pain to work with out there. You should photograph your fridge with the house lights off and the cabinet door open now. It looked photo worthy just like some of your on location subjects. :)
Awesome job!!
I totally relate to your approach to everything. Actually, I sometimes wish I was not so much of a perfectionist. Enjoy your creative adventures.
Now you need a second fridge to hold your beer 😉
Stacked one on top of the other perhaps 🤔
Badass mod!
Your videos always crack me up. :"That's what butters my bread these days." Keep 'em coming!
Pretty cool. If those shelves are MDF, it won't go very long before starting to sag from the weight of the fridge, you might have to upgrade the fridge shelf with something a little more sturdy at some point.
So, the only thing missing to absolute perfection is to have two of those switches wired in paralel, so the light would turn on if either door is open.
No practical reason to do it, of course, but...
The best fridge video on RUclips
Dude. I simply can’t accept such a huge compliment.
The dedication✨ 👌🏽. You keep inspiring me.
Perfect, perfect, perfect.
Me: *feels guilty for overthinking exposures, compositions or over engineering edits* Looks at a Nick Carver video and feels completely normal again. Haha, great job dude. Love it and the attention for details!
This intro 😅😅 & fire video bro
Ok, this may sound weird
But this is one of your most inspirational videos out there! Would enjoy more content like this!
(and time to over-engineer my new apartment)
Very cool. I would bag the film inside the fridge to minimize moisture and prevent water dripping on the boxes due to condensation ; talking from experience unfortunately.
Been toying with that. Good suggestion.
Good video
Nice work, Nick. It's always so cool when the vision in your head becomes reality.
YEAHHHHHH 😁😁😁😁😁 ..... A man thing , I am same on my Vintage BERLIN , MERCEDES .... detail nut !
A new film fridge would excite me too. I been eyeballing getting a fridge that looks retro
Love it, a fellow over thinker. Great job.
FEDEX would deny trashing it. They would say; inadequate packaging.
As much as I love film photography, Nick Carver carpentry arc????
Great video buddy! I’m the same, nothing wrong with having things just right mate
Totally excellent! How about the cabinet itself? Ikea? I'm outfitting a new workspace.
*sells cameras, buys power tools*
Nick, I'm very impressed with your setup. I'm just finishing up my super cool DSLR scanning station for my 35 and 120 film and realize a need a small, energy efficient film fridge.
That opening peek-through-shades caught me off guard, got a laugh.
Why does photographic film need to be refrigerated but photographic paper does not? Or does it?
This was pretty cool... i noticed you don't have an office tour. you have a pretty cool setup.... unless i missed it. perhaps an office tour would make for a good video? just a thought! great vid.
*Tim Taylor Grunt* - Because we are men and men like those things - *Grunt*
Just saw this....very nicely done. Quite handy with the DeWalt tools. I have a hand-me-down mini college fridge, but the glass front to this is sweeeet!
The american way : spend more energy to solve a problem ! ...
But very nice fridge
If my fridge came in like that I would return it immediately. I didn't buy it to arrive broken. I really hate it when shipping companies don't care about peoples stuff.
An 18 minute video about a film fridge, are you fucking kidding me? Ofc I'll watch the whole thing!
Nick, I feel like at this point you're just getting your grandpa stories out of the way early and turning them into short films.
And let me tell you I am HERE FOR IT
I liked this more than I thought I would
Step 2 swap the light out with some RGB lights. Step 3 add a controller that switches the color everytime when the cabinet door is opened. Now I can play with the fridge all day.
Okay, level, with us you really are an engineer. This is exactly the sort of thing we spend our free time pursuing. It’s great to see you producing more content here as well. Always looking forward to these. ✌️
I would love to see your review on the Mac studio, love the work on the fridge 🙌🏼
Then there are those people with that mindset out there with you that will happily watch someone for 18 mins fit an overthought fridge. I thank you for the video ;)
It would have been best after your first shot, to have your liquor in the living room so you can place it in your fridge. :)
Great video, and good craftsmanship, but I don't get the point about the fans. Every normal refrigerator is built into a cupboard and does not require any extra fans, it just has to have a hole at the top and bottom. With your solution, the warm air is pumped into the space between the cupboard and the outer wall and the heat cannot escape there either. In addition, the small refrigerator does not generate much heat, the performance is far too low. Keep up the good work and prefer video about taking photos. Thanks.
Aside from the whole being a man's man in denim and an untucked shirt who knows how to use power tools, this is incredibly nerdy.🤣😑
You don't need a "lower fan" you just let air in the bottom via a vent, & extract air out the top, with a fan if you must.
I use my wine fridge for film. I don't drink that much wine, so no issue with that.
Are you available for an installation this weekend? lol
That's a pretty slick set up. I suppose the other mini-fridge is now only used for beer?
I wish you better luck than I had. I've known refrigerators to run 30 - 40 years without a hitch, but my film fridge crapped out at just one year. Since film is more important than food, back into the kitchen it all went. :-(
Love your videos, of its installing a film fridge, btgwag or out in the field, it’s always a blast to tag along!
This sure beats my baggie of film in the vegetable crisper
Third thumbnail in 14h, I till think the first one was the best ;)
9:04 I love you Nick. Had me laughing out loud.
Sooooooo satisfying for a perfectionist with OCD ! YESS !!! Thank you man :)))))
2:17 Spider! I thought it was on my screen for a moment, haha.
I totally get where you are coming from Nick, I’m the same. Nothing gets done without it being 1000% thought through and planned to the enth degree.
Very very nice. The cabinet switch for the light was a great touch
I love everything about this
Man, you do it all. HGTV has nothing on you.
Best fridge vid ever.. I didn’t even know I needed one, do now!
Well done, though it would bug me endlessly to know that only one of the doors activates the lights... can they be daisy chained?
Now you’re speaking my language. I could easily daisy chain it so that both had to be open to trigger the light, but I’m not sure how to make it so either door would trigger it. I’m sure I could figure it out if I made my 2 remaining brain cells work hard enough.
Maybe you could get a second switch and wire it in parallel with the first one. This way either one will complete the circuit, and if they are both in at the same time, no problem, you just have parallel shorts.
One benefit is being able to just open the nonswitch door to let air flow on a crazy hot days if required etc
How heavy is the fridge? Is the shelf going to hold up ? Kind of looks like ikea composite shelf?
Your videos never disappoint, Nick.
Amazing work and detail. Also I might be the only one but the little peak at your architecture photography peaked my interest would love a video about that one day?!
Good to know. Thank you.
That long take of you loading the fridge slayed me. Congrats, man. Looks great!
Hi Nick, these type of videos are rare precious gems of the internet. True inspiration, pure beauty. Vision, plan, action, results! A work well done. Please, I repeat, please show us more of your DIY life. The world needs more #Craftsmanship.
I not the only one converting °F to °C, rigth?
I cannot believe I just watched a 17min video about a film fridge... I don't even shoot film. I need to get a life... ;-)
No you don’t. That is a good life.
I don't get how I got so much into it
Two holes behind the fridge would propably have been sufficient, but hey, why not...
I actually calculated the surface area of the 4.5-inch fan and made sure I cut slightly more out of the back of the shelf so there wouldn’t be any bottle neck 👍🏼
Great video as always Nick. Always a treat to see them pop up in my subscription feed. A funny thing. The other day I was watching a bunch of Martin Miller (A musician on youtube) medleys and I was always thinking of you. You guys look so alike that you could be brothers. That's kinda funny and cool in the way that you both are amazing creators in your own genre. Looking forward to your next video Nick!
Just looked him up. Yeah you nailed it. Weird. I’m discovering I may be from the template of “average 30-something man”
Nick it's not embarrassing, it's done the way I would do it in other words it's done the right way, even the light switch fitted to the door. I actually thought you would do that lol because that's I'd do.
Never clicked to watch a video about a fridge so fast. Top content, as per.
do you use dry cabinet?
Hi Nick, For years I stored my film in the refrigerator until, three or four years back, I read a Kodak product information sheet that recommended storing film in the freezer. What’s your recommendation on fridge vs freezer? Thanks!
9:05 that’s what she said
Sweet perfection!
Nice film humidor. My films have to sleep among the frozen beef and vegetables… It's always a struggle with my wife that the films are allowed to stay in the freezer when space is at a premium. I always tell her we need to eat more leftovers than freeze new ones.
Film must always take priority over sustenance.
Nerd Level 9000 ❤
sweeeeeet, when that door closes and lights go off
is it sad that i enjoyed this ? possibly....... but hey 😂😂😂
@Phillip Banes very very true indeed 😉
This video brought me a lot of joy
Nice job, that looks sweet.. always worth the extra effort to have a bespoke setup.
tight. I appreciate the craftsmanship.
NICE!
Really well put together video
beer and film only in my fridge
1:50 in and just "Brilliant".
I just watched a whole video about installing a fridge. Well played sir.
"O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! He chortled in his joy." from Lewis Carol, Jabberwocky
I never knew I needed a film fridge. Until now. My life is changed forever...
You've lost marks with the DeWalt tools. Sorry
@Phillip Banes it's customary to rag on anyone using any power tool that isn't Milwaukee. Superiority
You use Milwaukee, not Bauer? PATHETIC.
Love this build! Now I want one that I can see my film through the door. :))
