- In this video, we take on a structural steel welding project, where we weld 4 Inch angle into the ceiling of a warehouse to support the weight of the rooftop HVAC units being installed. We use also unbox and take a look at the newest member of the Freedom Fab family, which is a Miller Maxstar 161. We Use both that and our ArcCaptain Mig200 to knock this job out. Hope you guys enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Love how you and your kids help out and are around to pick up the work ethic and father time.
I really do cherish the time I have to spend with them. I love that they’re able to come in their own back yard and help their dad. Thanks for watching!
I like this kinda stuff. Being a fitter, I'm in lifts and high places all the time so I enjoy watching
I used to do it a lot more when I was a maintenance mechanic. It’s kinda fun to get back in the saddle once in a while.
I’ve run my 200a tig/stick welder on 110v using 300’ of 10 ga drop cords off of my generator on 30a plug in and off engine drive. Definitely doable. I love taking my kid as a laborer on jobs. Nice job!
Yeah, we basically ran the same setup. Had not one issue. I do hate how it takes a couple seconds for the generator to ramp up before the arc smooths out, but that just has to be dealt with. I really do cherish being able to take my kids on the job site. That’s real world experience. Thanks for watching!
thank you for the lessons. you are awesome!!!!
Thank you for watching!
Your doing great. Great dad..
Thanks, i appreciate that
Great video.
People do hate on everyone else these days. They sit on their moms couch in the basement all day and think their Mr know it all. You don't have to explain nothing. F em. Thanks for the cool videos and teaching.
A great video to highlight the stumbles... crawl, walk, run, trip, run again 😊
It’s nice seeing your son help 😊
Your videos have helped me a lot ! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Greetings from Puerto Rico! 👍🏾. And God bless you and your family.
Thank you sir! I’m really glad to hear that. Thanks for watching, and God bless you and your family as well!
Thanks for sharing your after thoughts on job costing. There's a lot of self employed that own their job. If we're taking on all the headache and liability we should make enough to make it worth it. Great lesson!
It was a good lesson. Sometimes there’s some growing pains. This was definitely one of those scenarios, but I’m very grateful for the experience and knowledge. Thanks for Watching!
Also...Your channel is F-ing amazing! I've learned alot from watching ya'll! Keep up the great work. America needs more people like you.
Wow, thank you, that really means a lot. I take great pride in this country and the opportunities that it has given people like you and me. Thanks for watching!
I agree with you ,nice welder
Preach it, Brother!
You probably didn’t want to be, but I think you’re my new bid consultant. Lol.
Even though I’m a Milwaukee Guy, I also own that same Dewalt Table, in fact I have 2 of them, and I can attest to the fact that it will hold 800 Lbs for sure, because I say an Eaton-Fuller 13 Speed Transmission on one of mine, and it sat there all day long with no problems.
Milwaukee doesn’t make a Table like this or i would own it.
I loved the Tough Love part of the Video. We are very like minded Guys. That’s probably why I like your Channel so much. No BS, straightforward just the way it ought to be. That and the fact that I’m a Welder/Fabricator also.
I love both Dewalt and Milwaukee tools. I feel like some things are better from one brand than the other. I do really like the table so far, and look forward to using it in the future. I am definitely a NO BS type of guy. Sounds like we see things a lot alike. Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching!
This was a great one.
I knew I like this tradesman, but didn’t know how much until I heard his opinions. Stand up guy.
Thanks, I appreciate that, and thanks for watching!
We run Miller Maxstar 161 s and STL these in my welding classes at school. There great little machines. I have students on them all day running. Some of them I have going on 5 years in my classes.
I’ve been very impressed so far. Big performance in a little tiny box. Thanks for watching!
Parenting done right bro, luv it.
Thanks! This generation needs more kids like we had in this country 100 years ago. Thanks for watching!
I tell my kids the same thing I can warn them till I’m blue in the face. But until they get hurt they don’t understand what you’re really talking about. I was tough love ( I’m old school) and it taught me a lot more than any book could ever. And I’ve watched a lot of your videos and I don’t think I have ever seen any of your kids running around without proper ppe when needed
Sounds like we have similar parenting styles. I’m old school as well, but it works. Parenting today is just a lack thereof IMO.
Nice unit Miller says it all good on ya with your parenting skills, stay safe
Thank you, I look forward to seeing what it can do. God bless you and yours as well. Thanks for watching!
Preach on brother! There are so many haters and side line quarterbacks. You just keep being you. I was the same way with my children teaching them skills and letting them learn sometimes by doing wrong. Now I am a grand pa and its funny to sit back and watch how your children teach. You put out great contect and have good judgement. Keep being you.
Thank you. I hope someday when I’m a grandpa like you, I can look back and feel like I did a good job. I take being a parent seriously. Thanks for the advice, and thanks for watching!
Awesome content! Keep up the great work!
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Another great video with great content. Nice work!
Thank you, I appreciate that, and thanks for watching!
Nice work! That man lift is so much better than ladders!
Thanks, That man lift made so nice! When they’re as big as that one was, they shimmy and shake a lot less, which is nice.
Thanks for watching!
when l was learning to weld as a young man (9 years old ) my dad told me to always wear boots . l didnt listen and wore my vans all the time untill a big piece of slag landed between my big and second toe on my left foot . l still cant wear flip flops to this day, but l never go to a job without my boots . somtimes hard lessons are the best. keep up the fabri-haters section
Thanks for the feedback brother. Not sure if it’s the pain or the trauma, but sometimes that’s just what it takes to take it serious. I think we’ve all had experiences similar to yours. Thanks as always for watching. Hope you and your family are doing well.
Great video
Thanks man, I appreciate that, and thanks for watching!
First time watcher. Like your video and especially the intro to the new Miller machine. I'm looking to down size my machine(s) to something easier to get around. All my machines are Millers. Support you 110% on the haters.
Thank you sir, I appreciate that. I don’t think you would be disappointed in the maxstar 161. It’s a very smooth machine. And I love how small and mobile it is. Thanks for the support, and thank you for watching!
Thats a great investment for sure.
It’s already been used on multiple jobs, and it is so stinkin’ nice how portable it is! Thanks for the watching!
Hopefully you'll be top of mind when the contractor has another welding job. As for the new Miller welder, it's nice to have a backup machine when you're doing field work.
Agreed. Not sure what I was thinking, but I guess those are the experiences that make you remember. Thanks for watching!
Nice job
Thanks!
Hey man! Been working a lot so just catching up on your last couple videos. 15 mins in gotta say congrats on the welder purchase and I know the shipping cost sucked!
We have a max star that my grandpa got years ago and they are bad ass little machines. Like you said hard case Tig lift arc 120/220 make it awesome.
My first experience with it I was working for my grandpa during the summers in middle/high school and we had to do a ton of welding on a turbine in the bottom of a hydroelectric mill. He crawled down a 40ft extension ladder and I lowered the max star down to him on a rope. He gave me a 22 rifle and told me to shoot any snakes that swam towards the area he was working and that was my job for the week. It will burn 1/8 7018 all day with no hesitation. Glad to see your business and family growing from one small family business to another!!!
Thanks brother! Busy is not a bad thing. Yeah, the Maxstar has been awesome. I’m loving it so far. Very convenient. That’s a cool story welding with your grandpa. You’ll never forget that. Good times. Just curious, Did you end up having to eradicate any snakes while he was welding? Glad to hear you’re doing well, thanks for watching, and I hope you and your family are safe and healthy as well!
@@Freedomfabrication777 one or two!
@@McNeillWelding Crazy! Gotta say, I’ve never done a job like that.
I agree… self discipline is not being taught… I agree life experiences is necessary… peace
I didn’t watch the whole video while I’m commenting this, so I’m not sure if you figured it out later in the video or not. But if you’re using a 110 extension cord, your stick amps will max out at 90, but tig will go all the way up to 160 amps. In order to run up to 160 amps for stick you have to use a 220 cord and your tig amps will still be able to go up to 160. It has never really made sense to me, but I hope this helps
I did figure that out. Thanks for the info, and thanks for watching!
Great work great channel. Haters are everywhere unfortunately. I have a very small welding business and aspire to get where you are. Keep up the good work!
Wow, thank you, I appreciate that. Yes there are Haters everywhere. The best thing we can do is take what they say, learn from it, and then use it ourselves better. Thanks for watching!
New camera better but old mic better
I loved the habri-haters. lol im going to use that. and i coudnt agree more. very well said. some of the best lessons ive learned came from failing and from pain and the hard way. obviously you dont want to kill your kids but letting them feel pain is a good thing. keep on raseing them right and to try. not be afraid of failure and learn from thair mistakes and move on. and as far as flash burn even now now as a welder ive been wellding since i was 9 and im 30 now ive done it. its not fun, but life keeps going it happens even if its an accident you walk up on someone at the wrong time or whatever.
I’m glad to hear you like it. Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching!
What’s the duty cycle on that little miller? I have an engine drive set up now but looking at getting something to run off 110v for situations similar to yours. Thanks in advance
Good video. Would be interesting to know what your mistaken assumptions were....... Did you think the job would go quicker. If so, what was the difficulty. Did you think it would be 2 hours per unit and it took 6 hours per? Was it measuring and cutting that took longer or did the welding slow you down? Could you have fabricated up on the lift?
Awesome stuff, would love to know if you think our new portable fabrication machine would be super cool tool.
Thanks, I checked out your product on RUclips. I’ve never seen one before. Looks pretty cool. I’d be glad to review it if you’d like. Message me on Instagram, and we can talk more about it. Thanks for watching.
Nice work, what weve done if you only have enough lead to get one stinger out there, cut some 2x4s or whatever you can find about the depth of the joists and tap them under the angles to hold them up. Then clamp angle drops or whatever you have on hand to hold the other angles on
It could probably be a one man job at that point, right?
Love the work with your son, must be fun! BTW: the audio is sometimes only coming from the right channel, when you are doing your monologues.
Thanks, I really do enjoy the time I get to spend with my boys on the job. Thanks for the feedback on the audio. I noticed the same thing. I think It’s gonna take me some time to get the new technology figured out. Thanks for watching!
Can u help me understand why is or what 6010 is so important
Advise me on what type of extension cord you used. Most of the info I've heard or read on running extension cord(s) to welders (110 Volt) is no less than #12 cord and no longer than 25 feet on you will loose amps. I current use a #12 on my 110v/220v wire welder at 25ft and it works good. But you indicated a height of 47ft high also to include length to a plugin. Interested in the knowledge you have on this.
I used a 100’ 10ga. Rigid extension cord for this job. Those cords are expensive, but worth it. I don’t use anything less than 12ga. for anything I do. Thanks for watching!
Keep up the good work brotha . If you got any slaps send them my may
Ah yes, RTU frames. Your neck and shoulders hurt yet?😏 I’ve done a few in a couple of Amazon warehouses which is what that looked a whole lot like. You seem very well thought out so I’m sure you have your reasons but I wonder if maybe the Miller Multimatic 220 AC/DC might have been a more useful choice.
By the end of the day, I was shaking like a dog sh!#ing scrap iron. There was actually an Amazon warehouse right next door. I like the Max star because it’s small, very small, and light, and the whole setup fits in that handy little box. I also have the Arccaptain for stuff in between. I feel like it fits the (welder)gap perfectly for me. Thanks for watching!
Most bar joints manufacture will not let you weld on a joist unless it’s with the direction of the top or if installation of point load angle…
What does lift arc mean or do, i really hope im not bothering u with all my questions in comments sir.
Lift arc is where u have to touch the tip of the tungsten on your work piece and pull up to initiate the arc. Takes place of the pedal and kinda helps when your in tight places or don’t have much room for pedals and all of that.
Just so you Know that's about what it takes, I do these all the time and there is nothing quick about it, I hope you charge accordingly.
Well, I didn’t. But I guess that’s how you learn. Do most the contractors you do this for make you price per unit instead of T&M?
Yes most of time I have to bid it, and I see ya'll had to field fab also, I wouldn't have touched them for less than $1200.00 a pop. Best of luck in future.

Overhead stick. Never did quite get that one down. I would need to practice a hell of a lot more. LOL!
Maybe someday when you’re bored you’ll have to set up some coupons and light up just for fun! I’ll be watching for that video! 😉
What brand is the seatshirts and shirts do yiu get? How well do they hold up with grinding and welding etc.?
I use sporttek hoodies, and they are pretty thick hoodies. I use
port & company long sleeve shirts, and they are pretty good quality as well. They both hold up pretty well. They obviously get burned up faster if you’re doing a lot of overhead welding or air arc, or something like that, but yes they hold up pretty well.
@@Freedomfabrication777 right on, I appreciate the response. Do you sell any of your apparel? I'd like to try a long sleeve or hoodie out before I order some and get my business name/logo on them. Even though your a Miller guy 😂🤣 just kidding. 🍻
@@Nick-ih5em I’m surprised you would trust a Miller guy for advice on a welding shirt! Lol.
@@Freedomfabrication777 brotha it took me about 10 minutes to push the send button to post my question because of that 🤣😂🤣
@@Nick-ih5em Haha, I bet it did. Hit me up on Instagram, and I can let you know what styles, and sizes, and pricing, and all that good stuff.
Fantastic video sir. Have you had any problems running your arc captain off a generator.
Thank you!
No, but I did notice it took longer to ramp up and smooth out when the generator ramped up.
Thanks for watching!
Have you had problems with yours?
@Freedomfabrication777 yes sir I have I don't think I have mine fine toned yet. Really rough beads and tough start up in ramp. Iam also running a 5/32 7018. Thinking about trying something smaller.
@@fordlav I would bet that’s the problem. I have only used 3/32” on mine. I would bet 5/32” is a bit much for it. Just a thought.
@Freedomfabrication777 yes sir plus it's been way to many years since I stick welded. Love the videos and thanks for the info
no safety hard hat?
It wasn’t required on this job site
It's a pain getting caught on Pricing a job.
You can take some comfort that everyone in business will take a hit at some point.
The only thing you can do is lessen how often this happens.
It does really piss you off when it does happen. But, we are human and we make mistakes 👍
I guess that’s just the process of learning. Sometimes there’s some growing pains. Thanks for the encouraging words, and thanks for watching!
6010 rods need a slightly higher voltage that almost all of the smaller inverters don't produce. That's why they run 6011 but not 6010.
Good to know. I thought it was pretty cool that this one runs it, and surprisingly well. Thanks for watching!
Yes once you gets flash burn once , never again. But I do believe your son was closing his eyes .
I believe he was as well. They haven’t had it yet, so they must be. Thanks for watching!

I ran it with a 100’ cord off of a generator, and it ran flawlessly. Never tripped once. Thanks for watching!
It's only d c though right
Correct
Is this the job you were working on getting certified for last year?
No, that was for a pipe job. Much more complex than this, but I wasn’t awarded the bid on that one. Thanks for watching!
yeah man based on those welds he aint ready to weld structural quite yet and 2 days aint really enough time usually. But he definetly isnt the worst ive seen
Yeah, especially out of position, even though a lot of the welds I saw while up in the rafters would make you cringe. I won’t let him weld until he can walk away with pride and peace of mind knowing it is sound. Thanks for watching!

I hv failed 3 times learning from each time, i hv failed because my head and heart cant agree on pricing.
Why wouldn’t the main contractor accept you charging per hour or per day?
A lot of Larger companies are that way. They will only take a lump sum bid vs. T&M(time and materials). It’s very common. You have to play by their rules if you want the work. Thanks for watching!
