At first, yeah. Then it gets a bit too anime, plot twists that really don't matter or makes sense, even breaking it's own rules and becomes predictable.
@@a_p3ar1 I don't know if I'm interpreting your comment wrong but what does Anime got to do with squid game, when squid game is Korean and Anime is Japanese
Let's be honest. A lot of us would not keep showing up to work without getting paid for six months. I worked somewhere that missed ONE payday, and the employees rioted.
@@FiremanH16You’re making my case for me - as someone undocumented with no legal recourse, I’d know I have no chance the owner is going to start paying me. Why keep showing up?
One connection I didn’t make until the rewatch was that the finger-crushing is what happened to Ali’s hand. He 100% suffered a work injury and wasn’t compensated at all. That company CANNOT be operating legally.
I can understand Gi-Hun punching his ex-wife's new husband. Even though Gi-Hun isn't the best father, he doesn't want to cut ties with his only daughter, Ga-yeong.
Yeah,I mean he's doing great with the only other person he has in his life(mother),gambling away their money,am sure assaulting the guy choosing to love and support a child that ain't his own is warranted
Yeah, when I saw that scene I was so mad with the stepfather, how dare him to tell him to never see his daughter again? Even so, I would have control myself if I was him, I wouldn't have punched him, specially since he is giving me money to save my mother's life.
This episode is very underrated. Watching them all struggle so much was very heartbreaking and incredibly painful. The various hits Gi Hun took in the episode because of everyone being rightfully done with his bullshit is brutal because you know they're right. You know they're right, but it still hurts to watch him realize that they're right and that he truly does have no one left in his corner because of all of the horrible decisions he's made. And when his daughter saw him hit her stepdad and the look of fear in her eyes and his reaction it just broke me the first time I watched it. Especially when he said afterward "What good do you think I'd be to you or anyone else?" It was the first time the series ever made me cry. The entire episode is just realistic pain and it's really well done. The fact that there is more humanity and kindness in the game itself than the realities of the characters is done so well.
@@guts9160 I'm just highlighting the foreshadowing because I thought it was a cool detail but also considering that maybe this viewer hasn't gotten that far. I'm sorry if that somehow annoyed you.
It’s totally true that, although this one had less action, this episode might well have been better than the first. It does something which doesn’t usually happen in many western series or films. It actually gave the characters a chance to get out, see again what our lives were like on the outside again and were offered a second chance to bet it all. Usually in a western show they might just all vote to stay in, but this actually showed them leaving and then coming back. It totally throws the audience for a loop, thinking then that it makes no sense because there’s still the rest of the series left, but it’s a really great inclusion as you get to see why all of them would want to come back to that considering what they’ve got on the outside. It really goes to show that a lot of people in the world would be willing to take this on. Also people knowing what is happening from the outside. You can imagine plenty of films where the characters would all die and no one in the outside world would know anything. But here there is actually an investigation going on on the outside as well as the players on the inside. Everything in this story felt totally original, despite having some ideas that have been used before.
"In a western show they'd all vote to stay in." ...Not in most of them. There's no dramatic tension if it's clear that the "yes" vote will win. Most shows would have had the deciding vote be for "yes," but otherwise the scene would have played out like it did.
tbf, thats like a very referential detail that unless you know alot about SK deeply in terms of their social culture, alot of people would miss it. Hell even I missed it until i read about some Kpop star's suicide using the very same method
The saddest part about Ali's story is that I can almost bet he'd have much less debt, if not zero debt, if his boss hadn't been taking advantage of him. It just shows that he died just as he lived, being used by people because he was a decent human being and trusted people.
That’s also a prime example of pleasin people. Yk, a lot of people would think he weak because tried his best to make others happy. All that, just for people to bite the hand that they were fed with. Now THAT’S some crazy shit.
This episode is even more important when you realize that it's titled "Hell", but the entire episode is not their life in the games, but their life in the real world--insinuating that hell for the people in this show isn't the death games, but life itself. Also, *minor spoiler alert*: Each character's life in this episode reflects the way they end in the game.
The game masters probably didn't kill them, but it's likely they tried to settle their debts on their own or even got killed by their loan sharks, and so couldn't re-enter the game.
The reality of their situation, put up against the possibility of redemption, is too much of a temptation to refuse. Hope is a dangerous thing, especially for gamblers.
that was such a genius plot twist! also with the name of the episode as well. instead of some flashbacks while they would have played the games, they showed us the hell of their lives, introduced a new character and then just focused on the games, so now we have emotional connection with them and can choose our character to root for.
The actions of most of the main cast predicted their fates in episode 2. - Ali Abdul stole the money from his boss. Only to later have his marbles stolen by Cho Sang-Woo. - Kang Sae-byeok threatened to slit the broker's throat, only to later have her throat slit by Cho Sang-Woo. - Cho Sang-Woo threatened to overdose and drown himself before the games, only to kill himself in front of Gi-Hun. - Jang Deok-su jumped off the Bridge in this episode, only to be later thrown off a bridge by Han Mi-nyeo.
You should have a spoiler tag, but I suppose the first sentence is a good enough warning. I would also like to add: 1. Ali's death can be forshadowed in more ways, showing how easily he trusts a boss who hasn't paid him in 6 months, which is why he easily trusts Sang-Woo. Also, the floor in both scenes were quite similar too. 2. Gi-Hun swore on his mother's life and broke the promise, and his mother died in the end.
I'd say he is almost in the middle of the moral scale, the balanced of Ying Yang. His intention for winning the games is to ensure he and his mother doesn't suffer anymore.
