stylistically, you have probably come the closest to matching Tim Follin's music out of all the famitracker artists I have listened too. Please never stop
In fact this sound pretty exactly like the NES Tim Follin's work, like Pictionary and Silver Surfer. Is pretty close to an actual adaptation by Follin himself. Tim's gotta listen to this as soon as possible.
9 months later and I'm still impressed how you turned a 1-bit song from a damn piezo speaker into something that sounds just as good, if not even better
getting very strong Treasure Master vibes at 1:56 - 2:22, very very good shit!!! also, just a little Follin Tip, the noise snare needs a little attack time IMO. that's a signature follin thing, at least in his more "rock"-ish NES tunes
@@warmCabin I mean he nailed what it would sound like on NES if Chronos was ever ported to it, and Tim Follin did the music, and it was 1988. It's not just that it's on NES, it's also period appropriate.
I FUCKING LOVE how you used the noise channel for both the symbols AND the drums. This would be very memory efficient if this was used in an actual NES game.
Kinda spooky to realize that the realtime mixed original used... I think 5 voices? More than this, anyway. I've very often wished somebody would reverse-engineer the code for Tim Follin's old tunes and reiterate them so they get mixed without the harshness you get from 1-bit audio like that.
@@user-ql2re2es9y You can stop that by resetting the delta value every cycle. Though if you do that, it will slightly slow down the speed of the triangle channel but not enough to notice.
I love this remix so much...im a big fan of that triangle bass too. But i cant help but wonder how itd sound with the FDS bass...it might be closer to the original
I maintain a hope that someday, somebody will disassemble the raw ZX Spectrum playroutine and reiterate it in 16-bit audio with non-scratchy mixing. Follin did a lot of tunes with that gem, and they deserve to be heard without all the noise. Efforts like this give us a good glimpse of what it could sound like, but there are still some inaccuracies. The instruments used in the original playroutine are actually fairly advanced and have some subtractive synth qualities, for example. Regardless, this is a good effort. Would love to hear a rendition of Future Games as well.
Nah. If you are still doubting that something can be better than this rendition, then it is best you stop being lazy and re create this masterpiece. ;) But you wont, mainly because all you can do is envision and not create your own version... So have at it, learn how to compose and show us that masterpiece.
@@898doffo Bro, I don't know if you only glanced at what I said or if you legitimately couldn't comprehend it, but you sure went off on a meaningless tangent there.
basically It's a bug that allow you to "change the volume" of the triangle channel by increasing the delta counter of the DPCM channel with the Zxx effect
It's awesome. I love this Spectrum music. I never imagined it could sound so impressive in an 8-bit polyphonic console. How did you manage to distinguish the different tracks inside that beeper sound wave?
Having a high value in the DMC counter will lower the volume of noise+triangle. Part of the weird way there is nonlinear mixing of the sound channels. Even Nintendo's own games made use of this, StarTropics will write a value to the PCM counter to set a volume for the triangle at the beginning of every song.
technically it is used, with the zxx abuse at the beginning you can see the audible click as it returns to normal, but I agree aside from that it isn't needed

I gotta agree. While this having the harmony of the original, it sounds exactly like a bop Follin would cook up in Pictionary or something too

Great work!
Chronos is a track that needed a lot more love. And you completely nailed what it'd sound like on a NES.
Hahaha, the first song is released on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum using 1-bit DAC, that's sounds bad......

I still love the fact that he managed to get an equivalent to this onto a 1-bit speaker.

The last line is just sitting there, sizzling...
wait he just adjusted the triangle volume thats illegal 0:02
Illegal?
It bypasses any such law, by manipulating the DPCM delta counter.
💪🏾 j’adore
What do you use to make these visualizations?
VinylCheese used SidWiz, but I suggest using corrscope. Don't use SidWizPlus, it has compressed audio, and OVGen is unmaintained.

That's the DPCM
0:02 that's illegal
triangle doesn't have the ability to change volume
incorrect
pls do more tim follin!!!
How did the triangle bypass the volume at 0:02?
Sacrificing the sample channel, you can lower the triangles volume by 50%
HOW THE TRIANGLE CHANGED VOLUME?????
HOW CAN I DO THIS???
can you send the source file? the .ftm or .dnm
Hide the sample channel.
No samples used, so no reason to show that.
technically it is used, with the zxx abuse at the beginning you can see the audible click as it returns to normal, but I agree aside from that it isn't needed
The sample channel can be used to modify the triangle’s volume with Zxx. It’s pretty cool, but it only works with the DPCM channel.
There's a sample at 0:06
