I owned this game as a kid and was lucky enough to have a friend that liked it a lot too. We spent several nights being up late gambling trying to get a financial edge or losing it all. I don't think we ever managed to beat the game which I am kind of thankful for as it added longevity and memories. For me it's in the top 3 on the system.
The track called Travel in Style from the game could almost be a professional studio recording in quality, great use of clean, bright percussion samples, electric piano chords, and synth bass. The use of the SNES audio chip's DSP to create delay (echo) on the lead synth is very effective. Kind of a jazz funk style track. A comment in the vid of the fanmade version of the track for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) correctly states the track would be great in a Sonic game... I was really impressed the the track upon hearing it. The rest of the Mystical Ninja sound track is varied and atmospheric, very Japanese sounding with great pan flute samples and Japanese percussion. A masterpiece of fun and charming gaming (and listening), all around!!
Definitely a timeless classic. I'm never going to forget visiting Toys'R'Us with my father and uncle and seeing this game there. I remember the box art is what attracted me to it, so I took out the checkout slip for the game (back when they had those) and I remember my uncle being put off by the look of the game, and he tried to convince me to get something else. Glad I didn't, because this turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time, and one of the best multiplayer games on the SNES. I have so many great memories with this game, and I still go back to it to this day.
i got that game for my birthday when i was 9 or something... just because i liked the colours in the advert (in the n64 magazine). i love it, in fact the reason i got into retro gaming is becasue i wanted tp play that game again, went back to my parents house and found it with my n64 in the attatic. Awww the nostalgia
You make a good point about games going backwards in graphics at the beginning of the 3D era, due to awesome pixel art giving way to ugly polygons. Think of how much better the enemies looked in FF6 vs FF7. Although they were 3D in 7, they were uuuugly.
I wore the rose-colored graphics back then though. Of course we could imagine something better graphics-wise, but ff7 was so fucking charming that it won most of us over.
The mid 90s to early 00s were a really dark period in gaming. 1st gen 3D graphics were ugly as FAWK. The industry decided to jump into them far earlier than they were ready for. Charming 2D sprites were gone, and it wouldn't be until around Max Payne or the PS2 that 3D graphics stopped being a bunch of jagged triangles. That was THE worst aging period in gaming history. You just can't go back to those games. On top of ugly early 3D graphics, they still hadn't figured out how to design a 3D camera (Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time were the only ones to come close). That's why it baffled me why they bothered with a PS1 classic. Who the hell wanted to go back and play PS1 games? The tiny handful that are still worth playing all got remakes with better graphics that are superior to the original in every way. (Twisted Metal 2 might be the sole exception)
totally agree with the 16 bit vs 32 bit comparison. the early polygon (as well as the early CG graphics) aged poorly. I also don't like the mid and late 90's style anime style art compared to the late 80s one, used in many Japanese games. I regret selling my SNES and Genesis, rather than my PS1 and Saturn
I was going through some things before moving to a new city when I found a scribbler, which I opened to find 7 pages of complete random nonsensical characters. I knew it was a password thing right away, and by the time I reached the fourth page I had already thrown Mystical Ninja into the old SNES. But I started at the beginning because I didn't want to go through the password struggle. Absolutely love this game, play through it every couple years.
Ah, the Goemon series, such a huge part of my youth. So many games on all sorts systems and all are great. They even just translated all the NES and Super Nintendo Japan only games. Such an underrated series in the West.
When I was a kid I rented that game from my local video store. I liked it so much that I wanted to buy it but my parents wouldn’t let me because they thought it was racist.
Hey Dude, all 4 Goemon games have been (re)translated now. Including the Ebisumaru puzzler. Maybe it'd be a good idea to make a compilation video down the line.
It wasn’t easy but I managed to recently managed to get ahold of this game. Having been a fan of the N64 game, I had high hopes for this, but haven’t gotten around to playing it yet. But seeing this makes me glad I kept my eye out for 20 years.
I'm a somewhat newer sub. I was going to request you cover this game, but decided to check your backlog first. Of course you've already gotten to this one. My best friend and I are in our mid 30s. We don't get together like we used to, but when we do there are 3 SNES games we like to play when we get a chance. This, Super Mario World, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. All 3 are great couch co-op games that we have mastered over the years, but never get enough of playing.... although I will admit out of the three the MMPR game is played more for nostalgia than quality, but whatever.
What an incredible game! Everything about it is top notch. I actually played every game in this series (thanks to all the fan translations) and I still think this is the best of the bunch. Classic!
He is obviously talking about Japanese people. He has the intelligence to know what other country's normal people look like. Just because he said they look like everyday people, doesn't mean he is talking about his own country.
Any plans to look at the other 3 Snes entries in this series? I know they are in Japanese (although 2 is getting a decent translation patch soon) but it would be great to see them covered on this channel, in depth.
After finishing SMW for SNES I was LITERALLY stuck on this game!!! Insanely awesome game it was my childhood! I must have rented this game sooo many times 😂
Your assessment of 16 bit-era games and how much better they age than most is something I agree with and feel very strongly about. They have superior visual and audio to any video game before their time, and also feel more refined, crisp and tight than any early 3d game -- or arguably almost any 3d game, period. I never completely kept myself in the past and have played and enjoyed many more modern games from the ps1 era up to now, but aside from outliers like Symphony of the Night and games in genres that aren't adversely affected by the jump to 3d like rpgs such as (most) later Final Fantasy games or Dragon Quest 8, I can't help but feel games in general were in a sort of way, at their peak during this era. I also just plain prefer the more colorful, cartoony, Japanese stylings of the vast majority of games on the NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, etc. These days, I find myself shying away from the more major, big-budget games (except Nintendo) and more towards indie and retro-styled games.
An outstanding production with terrific fun & lasting appeal. Underrated to this date. Should've been on SNES Classic Edition, yet did make it in Japan.
I rented this game a lot back in the 90’s extremely funny and entertaining one of the best on the systems, I was lucky enough to buy on eBay a lot with this game, Castlevania 4 , killer instinct, street fighter and a few other games for 8 dollars each in 2023 😮
This was one of my favorite games as a kid, as a teen in the 90's. I loved the mini games; I loved the aesthetics. This is one I know that I owned. I love this game, but "the hit detection is good" is a statement I dispute. It's not the worse, but it isn't good. Particularly on ranged attacks. The yo-yo weapon deals only in teleportation damage, e. g. Still, EASILY in my own personal top ten for SNES releases.
i still can't figure out how to use the goddamn scrolls. i see guides saying you can choose in the start menu but there's nothing to choose. I'm at POW02
Let's see... Design. Gameplay. Music. Mini-games. Difficult, but not impossible. Multi-player. Humor. Pure nostalgia. Worth it. Hell.. When i was a kid, i would let the password screen's music loop over and over.. perfect game. (I also did not know you could hop through those doorways where the painted face men are climbing the ceiling.)
Not one praise to many, truly one of the best snes games made. I just want to add that the musical score is very good too. For me personally a top five game ever.
This is the number one game I remember obsessing over in the pages of Nintendo Power but I never even so much as rented it. Was it not available? Did the bug eyes on the cover scare me off? To this day, I've never played it: but it looks incredible. I'll see if I can't get my 7-year-old son to try it with me.
My cousin turned me on to this game and we were just just we children man best SNES game!!! Still amazed on how much they fit on that little itty bitty cartridge
I love games like this, because I have a love for the Japanese culture and I want to study it. I downloaded the game's soundtrack, which I'm now listening to on iTunes.
hello Snes drunk can i ask you this i''m looking for a game SNES about a ninja or something same that have a sword like a tree, after time you play that sword longer sorry for my bad english thank you and ... hope you understand hahaha
My sixth grade volleyball team was named the Mystical Ninjas. I had zero clue it was named after this video game. I thought it was just a joke lol. We finished 5-1. The next year, we got named a Joy Division (again, I had no clue we were named after something, thinking it was yet again a joke) and we went a perfect 7-0. Ok, I’ll shut up now.
I owned this game as a kid and was lucky enough to have a friend that liked it a lot too. We spent several nights being up late gambling trying to get a financial edge or losing it all. lol same I finally beat it with a friend on emu a few years back
Me and my cousin grew up playing this ish❤😢
@@SLICK8116 It was a great game.
I have the same exact memory, I played with a friend all night long on the slot machine. COW B, TIGER C, BIRD D!!!
And the music. So damn catchy.
Miss the Goemon series. RIP.

I used to frequent .spc files and this game definitely has great music.

One of my absolute favorite game on the N64 is "Mystical Ninja - Starring Goemon" ! And the second one on N64 is also fun =)
M. Ålander dude Goemon 64 is the shit!! luckily I was able to find it at a Gamestop some years ago. still have it
i got that game for my birthday when i was 9 or something... just because i liked the colours in the advert (in the n64 magazine). i love it, in fact the reason i got into retro gaming is becasue i wanted tp play that game again, went back to my parents house and found it with my n64 in the attatic. This game blew me away when I first played it. An all-time fave.
Thanks! I wrote an Illusion of Gaia review a while back, it's just a matter of getting reliable footage/save states to make the video
I love this game, I really wish they localized the sequels.
Same! Wish these games sold way more units.
Amazing game. Couldnt agree more.
There are English fan patches of 2. 3, and 4 now. Also, one of the PS1 titles that never came over as well.
@@flipparty8533 Finished the third one with the english patch two days ago. Freaking amazing!
Me and my brothers put so many hours to this game back in the 90's.. Love it and still one of the ALL-Time BEST games out there on SNES.
"I kick your ass and I kick your fish's ass, too."
And on that day, Drunk kicked many asses and is now known as the SNES Hank Hill.
I just came to make sure the answer was yes...because the answer is yes. Yes, it is completely worth it.

I couldn't remember the name of this game and started to think I made it up in my mind. Wow. It looks just as wacky and beautiful as i thought

I never had a chance to play this back in the day. Might just fire it up tonight.
This was one of my fav games of all time and it still stands up today!
I just bought this on the Virtual Console. I haven't played it in probably a good 20 or so years. It's still just as fun.
Whats virtual console?
Matin A'zadeh like the Nintendo Wii, WiiU and Switch. They can get you access to the Nintendo eShop where you can purchase games to download.
