During The World Around Summit 2023 last month, one of the highlights of Lagos-based architect and curator Oshinowo’s presentation was an insight into her work creating a safe space for displaced peoples in Borno, Northern Nigeria, following attacks from terrorist groups. Developed with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this site offers schools, healthcare facilities, a local marketplace, police outposts, and even solar energy cultivation, creating a sense of security and agency for the community, and offering a blueprint for future generations.
Oshinowo addressed the importance of considering context in design and embracing local solutions, which have roots in often overlooked techniques and traditions that have been with us for centuries. She also gave a preview of the artists that will feature in the upcoming Sharjah Architecture Triennial, for which she is the curator.
