  • In this video I discuss which camera manufacturer has the best line up for wildlife photography. I look at all the lens options from Canon, Nikon and Sony. I also cover third party options from Tamron and Sigma.
    This video is in two parts really, the first sections covers the expensive wide aperture fast lenses. the second half looks at the more affordable super zooms and smaller aperture prime lenses.

    I'm a Sony user however for Lenses Nikon, the 600 with TC is a winner, and the 180-600 is a good alternative to the Sony 200-600

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes that's my opinion too, although the Sony 200-600mm is an excellent lens. One I would be happy to use if I was a Sony user. All the best Steve.

    The Nikon 400/f4.5 with or without the 1.4X tele is so lightweight. Even more incredible is the 800PF, an absolute gem cost/weight/f-stop ratio.

      Hi Ben, yes the PF lenses are fantastic, great image quality in a small light weight package. Sorry I haven't replied earlier but your comment didn't show up in my notifications. Thanks for getting in touch, all the best,Steve.

    Hi Steve, another good video :-) I am a Canon user and agree completely with you :-) however I am now in my 70's and not at sprightly as you :-) so a small plus for me is that the slightly slower Canon lenses are a little lighter and easier for me to carry around, I got rid of my 500mm F4 a few years ago because I wasnt using it very often because of its weight :-)

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes that's a very valid point, the Canon 100-500mm is quite compact and reasonably light. A big plus to be honest. I know a fair few people who have switched to Olympus for the same reason. Keep well, all the best Steve.

    Interesting overview Steve and I agree we Nikon shooters are totally spoiled for choice when it comes to telephoto options, also including all of the f-mount lenses that adapt pretty well to the higher-end Z bodies. I would say, having recently used the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, having the in-built 1.4x teleconverter is an absolute game changer and gives it a huge advantage over any other 400mm f/2.8 offering out there..

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  9 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks Geoff, yes we Nikon users are very lucky with the lenses on offer. I know someone with the 400mm f2.8 with the built in 1.4 ,what a lens! Not even that heavy. I've just bought a Z8 so I've very keen to get out and take some shots with it Have a great Christmas, all the best Steve.

    Steve, in my opinion Nikon has the edge. It depends on ones budget. I just picked up the 180-600 and the 800 mm and they are awesome. It's not in the cards for the 400 or 600 TC . The next for me would be a new camera body. Greg

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Greg, yes I believe Nikon has the edge at the moment. Great lens combo you have there. I will replace my 200-500 with the 180-600 but I'll keep my f mount 600 f4. Thanks for commenting,all the best Steve.

    As a Sony owner I would say the issue for Sony users is the lack of easily adapted older telephoto primes to allow for more affordable options. Where Nikon z8/z9 seem to work great with older generation telephoto primes available at much more reasonable prices.

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  7 месяцев назад

      Yes I totally agree with you. I've just bought the Nikon Z180-600mm zoom as my walk around lens but I still use my f mount prime which works really well with Z mount bodies. Thanks for watching, all the best Steve.

    I can't fault your conclusions - I would have ranked them the same. I've been a Canon user for more than 20 years, but I'm considering jumping ship to Nikon. That's purely down to lenses for wildlife work - Canon just aren't cutting it for me at the moment. I love my 600mm prime, but as you say - there isn't much to choose between the three brands in this range. When it comes to smaller-form walk around lenses, Canon is killing me because I live in the UK and often need to work in dim or poor light. Their small aperture lenses are great in good light, but I don't always (or even often!) have that. I know we're only talking a third of a stop in some cases (like the 100-500) but still, that lens is also 100mm shorter than Nikon's equivalent and you have to compromise if you want to mount an extender. Canon's f9 or f11 lenses are almost useless to me for a lot of the year. My main concern over switching is the bodies - particularly AF. Canon has made huge advances in this area and I can imagine it'll only get better. That said, Nikon has caught up some ground and they're very good at releasing firmware updates so maybe they'll be on a par soon. Decisions, decisions... !

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Mike, yes totally agree with you. I can't really understand why Canon has gone down this route of developing small aperture long lenses, as you say the f11 lenses just don't cut it in low light at all.
      Canon are ahead of Nikon when it comes to camera bodies, especially the more affordable ones. Nikon doesn't have anything to compete with the R7 for example. But if you're going for a top end body such as the Z8 or Z9 Nikon is catching up with regard to AF performance I think. I've just bought a Z8, I haven't had a chance to use it for wildlife photography yet. Can't wait to put it through it's paces. Thanks for commenting, all the best Steve.

    Steve is it not worth mentioning reagrds to say the canon lens.
    You have the crop factor on some of the bodies.
    So for example you could shoot the 100 to 500 at 472mm which has a aperture at that range of 6.3.
    Add the canon crop equation of x 1.6 you are shooting at full frame equalative of 755mm.
    So the focal length not that short?

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  5 месяцев назад

      Hi , yes the crop factor does give a real life boost to focal length. But in reality it is just an in camera crop, so a longer focal length lens is still the better option. Although Canon have brought out the 200-800mm zoom so that does add to Canon's options. Thanks fr commenting, all the best,Steve.

    • @eltwilliams1116
      @eltwilliams1116 2 месяца назад

      Steve but it's not digital crop , so full mega pixels is on the sensor. Unlike when you use crop mode you loose pixels. Then if you have to crop that picture in editing you reduce the pixel count more .
      But you did say you looking at full frame camera's only. Sorry missed that bit👍

  • @Jessehermansonphotography

    Native Mount? Nikon, easily. Adapted, Canon.
    EF Canon super telephoto lenses are plentiful and relatively cheap.
    Nikon has the 500pf which is brilliant.
    Sony has a wonderful 200-600 but falls short in every other respect. (No used market, no mid priced options ie 500mm f4)
    Nikon is king, no such a far length it is insane.
    100-400
    400mm 4.5
    180-600 6.3
    600mm pf
    800mm pf

    I honestly think it depends, if you're going DSLR then it's Canon and Nikon without a doubt...but in the Mirrorless market I think Sony has the edge simply because of their amazing AF...no point having a great lens selection if the cameras AF sucks.
    Rented the Z6II recently and the AF is absolute trash. I've shot Nikon for years including the original Z6 so I feel I know the system fairly well but for whatever reason the Z6II struggled at the basics.
    The Canon Eos R7 isn't a bad camera either unfortunately Canon decided to choose sales over honesty. The R7 can technically shoot 30fps but the AF algorithm can't handle it, to get the best out of the R7 you have to shoot it in efcs at 15fps and even then it's not 100% great.

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  7 месяцев назад

      Hi, I think the Sony system is excellent and if I wasn't a Nikon user already I would have given Sony a lot of thought.
      Having recently bought a Z8 I have to say the auto focus is excellent. So I'm pleased I stuck with Nikon, although the Z8 is expensive.
      I think Nikon have a great lens line up but they do lack cheaper camera bodies with animal eye detect. Thanks for commenting, all the best Steve.

    I shouldn’t say anything because I haven’t used any of them from the big 3 regarding their expensive 2.8 & f4 lenses but, Sony probably wins for weight & price. Nikon would win for the built in tele’s. Canon for their longer RF primes like 800 & 1200. Probably hard to argue over the image quality of these lenses. Have used ALL of these lenses to be doing a vid for anything other than talking specs & price?
