We've had hundreds of questions about how to get realistic looking guns, without having to use the real thing. Today Ryan shows the guns we used in losses and explains why they are better and where you can get them. - Развлечения
"THINK OF THEIR WELL BEING BEFORE YOUR FILMS." - This is the best advice you've given, Ryan! You truly are amazing!! :D Thanks for setting the standard and raising the bar!
The dog saying, "F you," line really got me. Very funny!
Was shooting at my local range and noticed that in 60fps it was able to capture the muzzle flash nearly every time but 29fps almost never captured it.
Yukari Yakumo filmmaking usually uses 24 frames per second.
Don't worry mate, gas blowbacks aren't illegal if you simply notify the authorities that what you're filming with is a fake weapon. Of course there's an age limit to these things, but you're in collage so you should be fine. If you aren't then just ask around. If they are illegal then I could be arrested soon, but I'm pretty sure they're not.
I loved the film, and I can't wait for more of these shows, explaining the film. The guns looked epically realistic. Well done!

Dear Ryan, your channel of film riot is my favorite channel of all time. I have a passion for short filming, and your tips help a lot
Great Video Guys!! Thanks So much for all the Info!!
i like the lens flares you used on the muzzle flashes. I haven't seen that before, but gives it a really nice vibe. i might use that sometime
4:50 , I was shooting a short film for school with some people, and one of the guys new some people from a military school. After a while someone called the cops, but the neighbors did now what we were doing but it was probably just someone walking by. So they came inside the house, and said that they would have shot if they had seen us when we were outside, and we were outside a while before that. I still think they wouldn't have shot because of all the camera's, mics and lights and stuff but there was a possibility. That was last year and I think I was 16 around then
Nice episode as always! I love this show, it's like drugs, can't stop watching. You have inspired me allot:)
@ImBrookeyB There is a link in the show more section.
i use a co2 blowback its a colt 1911 looks amazing on camera
All magazines for all pistols probably don't have that, but all of the magazines for the 1911 that I've handled (I own two of the Taurus mags and one Wilson, but I've also checked out others while shopping for the Wilson) all have that pin in the butt plate.
Removing the hole via visual effects is a subtle way to make the audience think it's a real gun. And Ryan absolutely loves subtle vfx.
this is THE BEST gift I've gotten for my birthday all my life.
The gun work definitely improved in this film over the previous action short. Much more realistic. One thing I always notice about stage guns is that revolvers often look like they're not loaded. With most revolvers, you should see the end of the bullet in the cylinder. If you haven't already looked into it, I would suggest snap caps or something like them. They are dummy rounds, some plastic, some metal, spring loaded for training and can be painted to look like a lead bullet, but very safe.
Do you still have the movie you made when you we're 17, i'm sure many of us like to see that :D
great episode....... as always
I was shooting a short that had guns, and this turned out to be a pretty good idea: actually go to the local police station, introduce yourself, tell them you are making a movie and where you will be shooting it, show them the prop guns you will be using, etc.
What about how to film the gunshot wounds and/or blood spatter shots?
Awesome film man!! Thanks for sharing. Just wondering which gas guns you get smoke coming out. Most of the blowback pistols I've seen don't do this. Any info would be awesome. Thanks!
Amazing props! I was wondering, have you used the distortion effect to simulate heat coming out from the gun? cause I can't notice it. If you don't use it, you should start as it really helps to sell the effect.
Nice. I like it when you give hard links to resources. --- Sent From filmriot's AppRats (Facebook App)!
Hey, Ryan. I have a real similar story. I'm 17 too (as you were when u got booked).
Me and 3 of my friends were shooting an action short in the valley with fake weopons. Well, everything ended up with 8 police cars and guns drawn too :(
learned the hard way like you :)
Hey ry,
Could you make a playlist of all the "easy" effects?
Please
@Brodising yes there are places that ship internationally but not all countries allow airsoft guns. For Example here in australia, its difficult to make a good action film because Airsoft guns are banned where i live :(
Ryan, I would have mentioned that they can possibly be dangerous, as they could easily pit out an eye if there was accidentally. And the m1911 was developed in the year 1911, so it's said M 19 and then 11. I also would have mentioned that the gas was propane. Love your show!
i tried to click on the link, but i cant get into the site for some reason... do anyone know any other place they sell gass blowback guns? (preferably not airsoft)
You know alot about guns, and about Ryan ;)
Hey Film Riot!!!!!!!!!!!! Todays my 16th Birthday and It would be the best present EVER if you replied to this comment!!!!! Love the show!! Keep up the good work!!
-David
Hey FilmRiot, are you having the same youtube issue where no videos are showing up in your sub box. Just wondering because I had to manually search for this video instead of it showing up in my sub box along with every other video that was uploaded today but didn't show. Thanks!
Dear Ryan, I looked at all the guns online and noticed they have orange tips? Do they come off easily or did you paint over them? Thanks
@entouchgraphics Actually, yes. I have footage shot at 29.976 FPS in SD on my Sony DCR-SR67. If that camera can capture a flare any camera can. Although I haven't shot at 24 FPS, but I'm sure it would capture flares relatively easily. Sent you a message with some footage in it.
Was that the combat version of the revolver or the longer one? I want to buy one but don't want the barrel to look too long on camera.
Thanks
Didnt show in my sub box :( ... good job i am following you on facebook and twitter :D
You should've told me not to carry the gun outside, because now I'm dead.
what did you guys do about the orange tips? You guys paint over them or cut them off?
hey, ryan thanks alot for the website i found cool stuff for cheap!
Lol, you're great, Ry!! --- Sent From filmriot's AppRats (Facebook App)!
The guns are a Beretta M9, a SIG P226, the revolver looks like a Taurus but a couple features are off, and the last one is a 1911A1 that could be from a couple manufacturers.
@HelpfulPlez
any other place in your mind where i can get the props from ?
@PifWorks , The recoil is not because of the plastic bb, it's because of the blowback.
what a great video to watch before sleeping.
Hey did they come without the orange tip or did you remove they, thx
@HelpfulPlez any suggestions on another cheaper, better place? I'm looking for a realistic pistol with not a lot of cash, something that looks like the m9?
quick question, when i make gunfight do i...
A. right every little detail of the fight in the script?
B. Just write "Gunfight ensues" in script and choreograph later?
C. all of the above?
I don't believe much choreography is included in scripts, if any.
a few months ago i was having a look at a run down pub with some friends (which my friends family owns - by the way) before making a film and the cops were called on us because people in the shop next door. they thought we were all doing drugs and kicked us out.... we never made the film.... its cool that something similar happened to you (although obviously yours was a lot more serious)
@CoDLegoCrazed finalcutking has an after effects tutorial on coloring over the orange tip.
How do you read the script for Film Riot and Film State episodes? Just by memory or you own a teleprompter?
@DWho42 Pretty sure anything you get in the uk will need to be painted, I know in canada as long as you get the right papers you can have them shipped here, but i know at least britain is different.
while a great episode a learned a while back from another youtube(er) what some realistic guns were. (they ended up being the same thing, gas blow-back guns.)
@CaptainFysh well you don't need the bb's in while shooting, you just have to hold/tape down the slide release.
hey ryan iono if your gonna respond buuuuuuut how much did your m1911 cost i have looked on the site you recommended and they all look the same pretty much, they just differ in price can you post a link or something cuz that gun is awesome looking, thanks :D
@HelpfulPlez Which site do you suggest then.
Actually, most Semi Auto Firearms have a hole in the base plate of the magazine. It is how you take the magazine apart to clean or repair them. The hole on the prop .45 handgun actually looked very realistic. Still workes either way, but for future reference the hole works, without any alterations in post... Also I LOVED Losses!
Where did you get the soundtrack of losses
Where did you get the gun sound effects?
I HAD THE FREKKIN' SAME THING! I was making a short film with wooden home made guns! And all of the sudden a 2 police mini vans drove up the terrain! 4 cop's came out, pointing guns and wearing bulletproof vests!
@royleonard7 I know that, but the thing is if it has no BB, the recoil won't close the barrel to shot again, but it will stay opened, to show you that you have to recharge the gun. I found the answer to my question on a FreeddieW video; he taped down the release button for the gun, so even if it's empty, the gun won't stop and it will always Act, as if it was loaded!
@redsoxpats98 I'm pretty sure he uses After Effects for VFX and either FinalCut Pro or Premiere Pro for actually editing the footage and sound.
How would you go about getting/using realistic guns in Canada?
Quick question my bro are the guns you guys buy gas blow back or no blow back? Also what guns do you actually use?
Show a tutorial of how you add the muzzle flashes and such in aftereffects?
Thanks!
RYAN! Can you upload the action short that you made when you were 17???? I wanna see how good u were at filmmaking when u were my age
I stopped by my local police department, letting them know that we had these in use. We told them the location we would be at, and how long it'd be, and even showed them how they operated. I still got in trouble.
how did you make the muzzle flashes of losses i hope you'll make it an episode
@Stoja987 The guns from shortyusa are Airsoft meaning they shoot a little plastic BB which are non lethal but hurt like a bitch The Spring guns shoot the BBs from a high tension spring, the electric ones shoot with a motor, and the gas guns with pressurized CO2
Did one did show up in my sub box.. But I saw Losses on Friday instead of Wednesday because it didn't show up.. Luckily I was curious and started loaded more videos..
@HelpfulPlez Where do you recommend, Evike?
RYAN !!!
i have a few airsoft guns from the 90's... they look just like the real thing and even have kickback. great for films.
Actually most magazines we'll have a similar hole on the bottom which may be able to insert a tool into for takedown. I don't think 1911 mags have it but some might
@NoSoyCaca same, some of my friends have some old airsoft ones which are now band so I try to use them, I would just ask around, you nver know, someone might have some
@HelpfulPlez
What other seller do you recommend then?
Josh has an incredibly menacing look on his face whenever he shoots a gun...
thats clear, but how you get the holes into place! like how you imagine, did you use green dots on wall?
Hey, I just noticed something. Where are the orange tips to the guns? I checked the site and all the gas guns I was looking for had the orange tips.
Hey guys just a tip.instead of going to shorty or any other airsoft site, go to ebay first. i got all my prop weapons for less than 50%. used of course but that just gives the guns a better look
You might like my new short film guys!
hey! where can i download the sounds and fire fx of the guns!?!?
Anywhere from $70-$150 for the gas/CO2 blow-back style guns
Rifle style blow-backs start at about $170.
Or for less money you could get spring or electric style air-soft guns
@epicdude79 Not in California. You can remove it if you're using it for filming purposes.
Hey Ryan
at 1:40 the take down lever from the P226 is on "disassembly". Don´t fire your gun with the take down lever at the wrong Position, have the same airsoft, not a good idea :D No, i´m just kiddin :) Very nice Video and very nice guns! Love ur vid´s!
greetings from Germany :)
@hawke525 Just Sharpie the orange, or use spray paint. I did that and it turned out great
So Ryan, What happened after the cops lined you guys up? Did you get fined, court dates or anything?
@mphmaster I know but I thought that after you remove them, the metal under it still sticks out. These don't. Thanks anyway :).
How does it recoil back if it has no bb inside?
How do you get permits to use these guns?
@BinnyNL ik ben ook nederlands. haha, lopen wij een beetje engels naar elkaar te praten. trouwens, is het importeren niet verboden? doe je het zelf?
Oh my gosh the people in this comment section know nothing. yes they are airsoft guns. They are airsoft gas blowback (GBB) guns. They don't require any permit to use and the guns will shoot without bb's if you hold down the slide lock. You just unscrew the orange tip, fill it with gas (fill it with extra gas if you want it to look like gun smoke) , and they're you have it a cinema quality gun.
vince gredo or maybe add a bit of silicone oil to the tip of the barrel?
At 3 minutes in, you mentioned a hole in the bottom of the magazine for the gas nozzle. Well, my real M1911 (pronounced like the year) has a small pin in the butt plate of the magazine. So by making it more realistic, it actually became less realistic. Just a fun fact :)
Hey what was the cost of those guns, because we have a really low budget and are trying to look for more realistic looking guns that won't break the bank!
I found all mentioned guns on youtube and no gun had smoke effects like in 1:55. So, what gun is it?
The smoke was emitted by the silicone oil that is usually used to lube gas blowback airsoft guns.
Are you sure? Because there is no hot temperature to evaporate oil and also I don't believe that propane reacts with silicone in such a way.
And if indeed it would be so, wouldn't the smoke effect just last for a few rounds, maybe even one or two?
jokdaris
GBBs do that a lot. Nothing is evaporating do to heat, the gas is just being expended when the gun is fired.
im so happy for FR mondays, i was sitting around and was like wish there was something cool on, (and because youtube is being gay with subscribers now) i typed in your name hoping this would be up and it is, thanks man.
I just got a 1911 pistol blow back gun and its SICK
Removing the gas port in the magazine base wasn't necessary as magazines typically have a base plate release button there to slide the base off and disassemble the magazine for cleaning. Also, the "M" names are the US military contract names. The actual maker and company models are as follows: (M9) Beretta is the 92fs and the (M1911) Colt is a 1911 Government. The other semiauto is a Sig Sauer p226 and the revolver is a generic .357 magnum (ironically "608" is a Taurus model for the 357... a number that was mentioned for the Sig). The iconic .357 would be the Smith and Wesson 686. Calibers: 92fs is 9mm, 1911 is .45, p226 pistol is typically 9mm (but could be 40 or 357) and .357 is... what it is. The only calibers worthy of a muzzle flash here are the .45 and the .357. Cool short... pretty decent gun handling as well (fingers off triggers, good 2 hand grip... but keep those arms straight!, guns pointed at ground in front when not on target). Good work.
@kerwin762mm
It seems to be a Dan Wesson revolver, actually. Or a complete mockup.
Also, as informative as this video was, I was hoping to learn where the funding for these came from, as this stuff is pretty expensive.
The CO2 guns , do you loud them with plastic bullets ?
If i shoot my CO2 gun , with no ammo ( plastic balls ) the slide slides open .
Only with ammo i can shoot shots with the blowback action . But its daungerous offcourse with the plastic ammo
@MRJAMMYDODGER101 i live in the uk too, the law isnt that strict, you can buy blowback guns easily and you can use them outside just as long as you warn people around you and the police.
I really enjoyed your movie, but I feel inclined to share some firearms knowledge with you.
For one it's not a "clip," it's a magazine.
Two, that hole actually does exist at the bottom of a 1911 magazine as well as many other gun's magazines.
What airsoft company is the 1911 from? I play Airsoft, and want one as a prop and as a gun for game play. Most good 1911's (For performance not prop wise) are expensive.
