If you are not too finicky with needing everything at absolutely the U.S. standard, Mexico has more cultural character and charm than Hawaii in my opinion. The main challenge will be finding a place without too much noise (if that is an issue for you) and low crime rate. Home break-ins are too common in some areas of Mexico. Do your research. Note for me one thing that is lacking are no basketball courts and no jogging oval, at least where I am in Baja. Ensenada and Cabo have an oval rubberized track but I do not want to live in those higher cost, noiser, congested shities. Theft is reasonably rampant in Ensenada but seems to be very low in some other areas of Baja. Also lack of sidewalks and even unpaved roads in rural locations and towns. Why not rural Oregon? The climate?

Very interesting interview... I have spent a lot of time in Hawaii and with the home base of Oregon this conversation is interesting. I used to have friends in the North of Oahu ( near the windward mall) actually a Very almost exclusive "Hawaiian" neighborhood so not many "white" people in that area. However in more recent years changes there have been reducing hostilities. To really learn more of Hawaii's history I spent time on Senator Fong's Plantation with his family explaining so much of what they had been through over a 50 year time period... I don't know if they are still showing tourists through there. I also love Mexico so this is so interesting to hear different perspectives on both places.

You can use a Medicare Advantage program in Mexico, not standard Medicare. Not time limit on using Advantage plans here, used it twice in nearly four years living here full time.
I totally disagree with him about the quality of housing here in Mexico. If you take your time and look around over six months you can find homes equivalent to US standards.Wife and I four years ago bought a house in Bucerias which is 20 minutes north of PV and we paid only $180,000 for our home and it has high quality primavera wood in the doors, the cabinets, the closets, and the kitchens tooo. In the bathrooms and kitchen the countertops are perfect granite countertops without any flaws. Updated plumbing and electrical and a solar system too and in a mostly Mexican neighborhood.

I'm guessing the $180,000 house would be closer to $350,000 today. 4 years is a lifetime when it comes to construction costs (especially when the pandemic taught everyone they could work from home overseas...) Quality construction is definitely available, but it's all about how much you can afford.
Thanks for the info on Medicare Advantage. I've reached out to an expert to see if he's willing to be interviewed and share all the gritty details.

Living in Mexico offers a unique blend of advantages compared to living in Hawaii. Mexico boasts a lower cost of living, providing affordability in housing, food, and daily expenses, allowing for a more economical lifestyle. The country offers a rich cultural tapestry, diverse landscapes, and a variety of historical sites, providing a wide range of experiences and adventures. Additionally, Mexico's vast size ensures a multitude of climates and environments, from lush jungles to stunning beaches, catering to different preferences. In contrast, Hawaii presents a stunning natural beauty, with its idyllic beaches, tropical climate, and a laid-back lifestyle. The islands offer a close-knit community, a strong emphasis on sustainability, and a distinct Polynesian culture. However, the cost of living in Hawaii is considerably higher, with more limited space and resources, making it pricier for housing, groceries, and overall expenses. The decision between Mexico and Hawaii ultimately depends on lifestyle preferences, cost considerations, and the kind of cultural experience one seeks.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico - Absolutely everything we were told was a lie. When you know that Pharma and vax companies are part of the massive embezzling scam that the corrupt US government has been doing for decades, then you can realize that sociopathic money ADDICTS arranged and directed all of it. I had learned how the embezzling scam is done just before Covid, so I could see the enrichment plans. I had retired in 2016 and also learned a heckuva lot about US history and taking over countries, so I already knew that the US had taken over the UK, Australia, Canada and NZ in the 70s-80s, and we could see those countries doing really oppressive things, as well as some of the EU countries (Germany, Italy, France, for instance, all coopted by the US greedy cheats who designed the unfair EU deal).
I also had some nursing education, and time to read from experts around the world who totally DID NOT agree with lockdowns, and who knew masks cannot stop a virus, etc. Pandemic plans never included such lockdowns, the money ADDICTS arranged to change the usual plans.
So we have now seen Bill Gates saying Covid was NOT what they said, it did NOT have a high death rate, it was "like the flu", etc, we have medical journals saying, oops, yes, Ivermectin CAN be used after all (cheap generic safe Nobel prize-winning drug, FDA approved long ago, then the greedy liars pretended it was bad, restricted and PUNISHED doctors from using it, and so on).
And as I researched I found the US Swine Flu fraud of 1976 (the 60 minutes segment is VERY interesting, info in a 1978 Washington Post article about the government payouts for the vax harms then that said mass vaccination is always a problem (those vaxes were stopped after far few deaths than the number we saw with Covid vaxes), info re vaxes in India and Africa, info re the 2009 Swine Flu fraud in the UK, a horrifying story about the 2016 vax program in the Phillipines for Dengue fever, which a couple of experts warned against, yet it went ahead and several HUNDRED children died, and more such stories.
To understand how the massive embezzling is done is crucial for us to realize the propaganda and manipulation of the corrupt people in power. The man in your interview spoke about the US taking over Hawaii - same story is involved with the embezzling, and of course some places the US takes over are for strategic military AGGRESSION, not "defense".
Here is the MINIMUM we need to know in order to end the reign of corrupt sociopathic money ADDICTS who have been embezzling government money for decades:
Remember Henry Ford said that there would be "revolution before tomorrow morning" if the people know how the money system actually worked?
Well, the corrupt sociopaths in power know that government money can be issued IN ANY AMOUNT for anything that is physically possible, and they have arranged scams for decades to EMBEZZLE that money!
The major one is "privatization", where they pretend they will run something better than the government and "like a business", but this scam is designed so they can bill the government ANY AMOUNT, providing massive exec salaries and insanely high profits. Wall Street firms fall over each other to invest - so do most Congress (or Parliament) members - when these entities are put on the stock market, because they know that profits are guaranteed via fiat government money.
They all know that government money is NOT OUR TAXES, and that countries that issue their own currency do NOT have an actual "national debt" that the liars love to fearmonger us about, etc. We need to know what they want kept hidden from us.
The US has been taking over countries since WW2 to do this embezzling scam and has built a corruption cartel of many lapdog countries; the liars demonize any leader who does not submit, to manipulate public opinion so we go along with the coups, invasions, assassinations, etc. The US also directs the WHO, created the WEF, and monolithic entities like Blackrock, Vanguard and others got so big by participating in the embezzling globally! We need to see the BS and FIGHT the lunatic money addicts and their inhumanity.
They lie us into wars & then embezzle most of the war money through "privatized" war companies, incarcerate people to enrich themselves via "privatized" prisons. "Privatized" healthcare enriches insurance companies and related companies & investors, another corruption scam where they get torrents of government money but do NOT spend it on the healthcare people need.
Vax companies and the digital ID systems to subjugate us are also privatized! So are all the entities to track and control us that the liars pretend are to "help the climate": social credit, ESG, carbon tracking, digital bank currency, 15-minute cities and more. The scheme was to get TRILLIONS from many governments FOREVER while ensuring we could not rise up to stop their corruption, tyranny and inhumanity. (Pretending there is not enough energy, oil, food is how they will try to force us to get those digital IDs - they will say it is so we can get our "rations" and UBI etc to try to survive.) This electronic prison to subjugate is being finalized, so time is running short for us to expose them and stop their plans for us.
They use cloaking terms like "private" prisons, "for profit" healthcare, "public-private partnerships", etc, because they know that there is public backlash against privatization; we should always push back and use the CORRECT term when they do this. Currently, public education is being privatized by calling it "school choice" and "charter schools".
The lunatic money addicts in power lie, destroy and KILL for more "money fixes". They are totally derelict in their duty and UNFIT TO GOVERN and should face charges of dereliction of duty, violating the Constitution, embezzling federal money, crimes against humanity, violating the Nuremberg code, war crimes and more.

Kat and I were looking at property on the big island, and the prices were reasonable. But a year after we started looking, the neighborhood was covered in lava. But the cost of living was high no matter where you lived.

On my last trip to Mexico I took an organized tour. The guide made several comments, when discussing Mexican history, about how large parts of the US had belonged to Mexico. There, at least with that person, is still a bit of resentment and maybe anger. Not much we can do today about what our ancestors did...

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico

There's a need for recognizing why some people may feel resentment. Our ancestors did some not great things, but even today, many people from the US treat Mexicans poorly. For instance, the republicans in congress want to send troops into Mexico to attack the cartels - with or without permission from the Mexican government. I'm amazed at how well most people from the US are treated in Mexico - that speaks volumes to how gracious they truly are.

All people conquered other people since the beginning of man ! Native Americans slaughtered and killed other tribes routinely and also took their land... At what point do we stop all this historical NONSENSE ! BTW People of color SOLD people of color into slavery... AND almost all religions and peoples have been enslaved at some time in world history... Many over and over again... So can you please write me a check with interest too for my personal reparations ⁉🤣
