How to Install a Fabtech Spare Tire Mount on a Ford Ranger.

- The name "Fabtech" time warps me to the late 90s and early 2000s. Back then my dream lift was to get the 5.5" lift kit for my 99 Ranger. While looking for spare tire options for my 95 Ranger, I stumbled upon this "used" Fabtech spare tire carrier on Amazon. When it arrived, it clearly wasn't used. It was probably just returned. Everything was brand new in the original packaging! Not a bad score for $70!

I have a 95 and 2000 ranger - just starting the projects. The 2000 is in good shape - single cab stepside, manual and just figuring out which direction to go. Your vids help with the ideas!
Awesome! I'm actually in the market for 98+ 2wd single cab myself. Are they both 4wd?
I drive a 99 ranger, small cab and engine. I have done no large mods, I use my truck for work and commuting. I’d love to see inexpensive mods or useful parts that keep the truck simple
My front suspension is very different from yours. Fabtech used to offer a 3” lift spindle for fairly cheap but it doesn’t show up on their website anymore. There are other places that sell them but they are almost double what I paid for back in 2001. It’s crazy. Might be in much demand anymore since it’s an older truck. What other kinds of mods are you interested in? Looks?
@@rayregnogarage I am open to ideas, it’s sort of an all around. I’d love larger tires like yours and a 3” lift something that really grips on grass. I haven’t fallen In love with any rims and tires and I still have the stock 14” rims.
I’d like something in the middle of looks and function, while also keeping gas mileage down! Which is quite the struggle!
Ya if you don’t want to lose gas mileage, don’t get bigger tires. lol. A good set of BFG AT’s even in factory size if they make them that small would be good. You could also probably find some 15” wheels cheap somewhere
@@rayregnogarage ok thanks! I appreciate the help!
I have heard you can put wider tires on stock rims, for example I have 205 75 14, and I might be able to run 225 75 14. Is that something you would recommend if you have tried?
I'm all in!! might be more to do but I'm hoping to see the ranger in action.
97 ranger xlt 2.3L really enjoy your videos man keep up the good work !
Thanks!! 2wd or 4?
Unfortunately had to put off my 95 ranger xlt ttb build but now I have a 2001 f150 5.4 triton crew cab 4x4 and its really nice for the year
I loved my 01 Expedition with the 5.4. That gas mileage though. My van has the 5.4, too and it’s rough. Sounds good tho!
@@rayregnogarage gas mileage very bad yeah im currently looking for a commuter car lol
Ha. Ya. that’s why I don’t daily it. lol
Just purchased a 97 ranger, ur vids are going to be very helpful with my build...much appreciated
awesome!! i’ve got a few more in the cooker. need to edit. lol
I learned to drive in a ‘95 Ranger XLT with a 4.0 L V6 and a 5 Speed Manual Transmission. Loved it, wish I never got rid it. Currently driving a 2004 Expedition with 5.4 L V8 16valve. I replaced the air suspension with coil over and added a 3” lift and put on 33” tires. It’s my daily driver.
Looking to purchase an older Ranger again, ‘93 -‘97 range, to modifying and have for fun on the weekends.
Nice. I had an 03 Eddie Bauer Expedition and I wanted to do the same thing. I hated how soft and squishy it felt.
1997, 5.0 Ranger XLT supercab 4x4. Still need a front diff. Then going with a James Duff 5-6" suspension lift. Love your videos for trimming body panels and interior. Your video are awesome man!
That sounds rad! How hard was the 5.0 swap? Glad you find them helpful! Why the James Diff kit? Have you checked out Solo Motorsports? I wanna do their long travel system
@@rayregnogarage I got super lucky and found it already done, the owner had gotten tired of chasing down gremlins and traded it for a car at a small shop. Shop owner had it for a couple years, sold it for 2 grand. It was missing all the 4x4 parts forward of the tcase, and ran pretty rough but the interior is very nice, had a bedliner sprayed in, and was painted like a smurf blue. I tracked down the O2 sensors and found the guy had wired them backwards and crisscrossed. So I straightened that out and she's run like a sewing machine ever since! I have not looked at solo mtorosports, but I'm east coast so my offroading is more trail riding than desert running. I love watching you guys out west tear it up though! I decided on the James Duff kit because of the dual front shock system, which I imagine will help with the extra weight up front. I need to keep the rear end leaf sprung too since I use it to haul stuff occasionally and tow my firebird around. If you do the V8 swap, triple check your measurements for fitting, the other issue I had was a small oil leak that I couldn't track down until the passenger side axle beam finished punching a hole in the oil pan. Keep up the good work man I enjoy all your videos!
wow. lucky! I’d suggest checking out the solo kit and run a coilover with a better single shock. Even rock crawler guys run those things these days. I think you’ll be happier with it and have more tuneability and less shock fade
And thanks for the insight on the 5.0. so was reading the article on the rangerstation.com and it seems so involved. kinda scary honestly
@@rayregnogarage It is definitely a tight squeeze, cooling is a big issue too. I'm going to be going to dual electric fans and cutting some louvers into the hood soon. The good news is a ton of guys have done the swap and there's a ton of info out there. I'm also on the ranger station as SmurfBlu97. The guys on the V8 threads are very active and a great help. If you need a little arm twisting, I'm running 33's with 3.73 gearing, and it still lights up the rears. I don't hardly lose any fuel mileage with a bunch of stuff in the bed either. I love it!
I drive a 1994 ford ranger 4.0 4x4. Lifted 4 inches on 31s, I’ve done an exhaust, visor, after market wheels, some rust repairs, a clutch, and random old truck things hahah. Love the videos keep it up dude 🤙🇺🇸
awesome. thanks!!!
Here for the ranger content haha.
94 Ranger XLT daily/trail. 6 in skyjacker lift up front, Chevy 1500 leafs and belltechs rear. 4.56 gears, lunchbox locker in front, warn hubs, and 35s. Bumper and winch with coil spacers to keep it level. Had the truck for about 9 years now.
That’s awesome! What did it take to mount the Chevy 1500s? Are you running the bell tech shackles in the factory orientation or flipped?
@@rayregnogarage it's not too bad. Pull the bed off, grind all the rivets for the front hangers and move them forward. The front two holes and up lining up perfectly so you only need to drill two more per side. New hardware and some e-brake modification. I have them in the factory orientation with the stock blocks still on. I might re -arch the springs and flip the shackles in the future.
Ah yes. I remember reading about relocating the front hanger back in the early 2000s. lol. Can’t believe it’s been that long. I was kinda hoping the chevy spring would be arched enough to ditch the lift block. I don’t like the wheel hop from blocks. How does it ride compared to the factory spring?
@@rayregnogarageAfter I lifted it the truck never drove the same again haha. The rear end feels fine though I don't think it made too much of a difference. I think if you go with a 4 inch lift up front and belltechs you can ditch the lift block. Or just the springs I think you can as well.
@@jaredgriffith2148 Did the skyjacker come with extended TTBs? That's an awfully tall lift if it still has the standard width? It's not gonna ride very well. It will sit tall though...
I've 2013 F150 XLT 4x4. I plan on mounting 2 newer FAB Mounting Brackets for two Spares. One First to see if I have room for a Cooler & Anchors & Fishing Rods, Hunting Rifles or Shotguns,Decoys ect .👍🏼🎣
i have a 99 ranger XLT and it’s so cool that with the help of your quick release tutorial video i was able to install a quick release steering wheel on mine too
Rad. I miss my 99.
Would love to see how you take out the cruise control out. I am going to do the Steering wheel you did on your truck on to my
Do you mean from the engine bay? I can’t remember if I did that. lol. I vaguely remember removing something that connected to the throttle body. Maybe this article will help? It’s about installing cruise control but it might give you some insight on removing it. www.therangerstation.com/tech/adding-cruise-control-to-your-ford-ranger/
@@rayregnogarage thank you
Great ranger content 👌. Have a 93 ranger that I am almost completely rebuilding as a DD. And later in a year or so swap a 2.3l eco boost and 10speed auto for fuel economy and more power.
THAT is cool! never thought to put an ecoboost in an old ranger. Do you know many shops that have done that swap?
@@rayregnogarage Fat Fender has done a 3.5 eco. And there is one youtuber that is working on one but is going the manual route. Other then that i dont think so. Will be doing this swap on my own.
@@elfwithabike very cool. would love to follow along if you document the process!
98 3.0 manual 4x4 motor locked up last weekend. Just bought a frontier. Still have the ranger sitting in the driveway
What year fronty? I got an xterra, too. it’s basically the same truck without the bed. hah
@@rayregnogarage 05 with 176k 4x4 hoping it doesn’t develop the radiator issue. Yeah I’m finding out a lot with these Nissans. I’m shooting for the tswap. Get some travel and stance

1995 Ford Ranger XLT (extended cab) 2.3, 2WD, 5-speed manual
31 inch BFG KO2s on all 4 corners
Skyjackers 132X leveling coils upfront w/M95 shocks on all 4 corners (closer to level). New steering box and timing belt recently.
Maybe Deavers in the rear next? Maybe some mods to the engine or full rebuild of suspension next, not sure yet! Funny thing is I just put a camper shell and my truck was handling great. Just took it off and the reduced weight has made my truck feel squirrelly as heck!
I would like to see how you pull bedsides, swap out the stock rear end for the 8.8 trak-lok, or re-gear to a higher ratio and how to service it correctly
@@reynaldopadilla7420 I wish I had taken video of me pulling my bedsides back in 2003. Haha. I don't want to pull the bedsides on this truck. I'll definitely be doing a deaver swap soon though. Possibly an 8.8 swap if I can find one with 4:56 and a locker. I've done that swap before and it's not too hard.
Awesome!!.....I would really like to see some videos on removing engine peices for repair or something like removing the valve cover or exhaust manifold for painting
I drive a 94 2.3 2wd
Not sure how close the 2.3 will be to the 4.0 but should be similar. I don’t like taking the engine apart if I don’t need to, but if I do, I’ll make sure to document it!
@@rayregnogarage that would be greatly appreciated!! I love the ranger videos please make more whenever you can
will do. thanks!!!

ANOTHER stellar video!
Thanks!
I drive a 95 ranger with f150 beams and extended radius arms with sway away coilovers, the rear has deavers and shackles with 16 in kings
Nice. that’s what I had on my 99 Ranger (except i had sway away). Will prob do that again with some king bypasses. But curious to see how the chevy springs compare. might even try a sprint under conversion
On the rear I mean. For the front, I want to do the Solo Motorsports extended TTB with coilovers.
Nice man it’ll be bad ass in no time
Hope to see the ranger more often 🤘
97 5speed 3point slow 4x4 xlt (aka The Wampa) LOVE THESE VIDEOS DUDE!!! For sure keep em coming!!!
Awsome! Thanks!
Looking to buy a 4.0 2wd ranger next year pretty much going with what you have done to yours
I’ve got a 96 Extended cab 4x4 looking to do a daily driver/Trail rig build. I was hoping you were going redo your headliner, since that is something I need to do.
That was the original plan actually.. but it was so rotted out I decided not to. If my wife lets me pick up another ranger, I can do it on that one. hahaha.
Got an 08 2.3 lookin to make it into a mini prerunner nothing to wild I put a flare side bed on it and I’m hoping to put some Mazda b series front fenders on it to make it look beefy also love the vids man up👍
Is it a ranger? Not sure if you’ll need to get the full mazda front clip to make the fenders work. They aren’t much bigger than the Ranger fenders tho. Have you considered getting fiberglass fenders?
@@rayregnogarage yes it’s a ranger and I’ve thought about the fiberglass ones but idk it’s just something about Mazda fenders on a Ford ranger that have always interested me so I got the opportunity to have both fenders so I wanna mock it out first but if I don’t end up liking it I’ll probably get some fiberglass fenders then
Ya i’m curious if the Ranger headlights and everything will line up with the Mazda fenders. I do agree, I’ve always liked the mazda fenders..especially the 98+
@@rayregnogarage I’ll @ you on Instagram after I get them on hopefully it comes out good bro everything should line up👌

Where are you located? I ordered an AR Outlaw II and they sent an AR Outlaw I. was kinda disappointed but it’s a spare. Maybe just run a factory 15x7 wheel on a spare tire?
I love your video on ranger i got a 1996 4.0 4x4. Truning it into a off roader. I want to put a roll cage and racing Seats and a 6 in Suspension lifkit. I really want to take the truck apart and paint the fram and get the rust off. Damn Midwest snow and salt
What lift kit are you planning on getting?
It going to be from dufftuff 5-6" -stage-3-suspension
@@SpradlinJason Ya.. I wouldn't recommend going with a drop bracket lift unless it's just for looks. I would get this: www.solomotorsports.com/shop/suspension-kits/ford-suspension-lift/ranger-explorer/stage-1-mid-travel-front-suspension-kit-ranger-explorer/
@@rayregnogarage what the different from the both and what its on the truck sock. sorry kind new to the lift kits. and i am having a really hard time finding thrust washer for the front. do you have a Instagram so we could talk more.
@@SpradlinJason IG: @strongholdgarage There’s a difference between a “lift kit” and a performance suspension. A lift kit is for looks. The Duff product is a lift kit and uses drop brackets to lift the truck. The Solo product actually takes a factory beam, cuts and extends it. It’s much more functional.
Inexpensive ranger video ideas:
Pop the factory bedsides
Junkyard chevy 63" leaf swap
Cut and extend stock radius arms
Ray's truck is a '99 wtih torsion bar IFS, but otherwise a good list. I'm in the process of making extended radius arms right now.
Mines a 95 with ttb. The 99 was non torsion bar. I don’t own that truck anymore.
I like the idea of the chevy leaf swap. much cheaper than getting a set of deavers
@@rayregnogarage lol, my bad. Been so long I confused the two trucks.
@@rayregnogarage I have a 2wd 97 single cab the same color as yours. Wrapping up an explorer 5.0 swap then I'm on to the suspension. I have some unequal length extended beams and plan to rearch some chevy leafs and run them spring under for the rear. Some day I'd like to convert the front to ttb but that's a ton of work
97 ranger oil pan gasket
Yeah I'm a sucker for Ranger content. My '95 4.0 4x4 Ranger is parked in my garage right now and I'm building extended radius arms. Kind of wasted on stock tires and 1.5" leveling springs. But I'm looking forward to better caster angles, and I'll be ready for bigger tires.
Sounds awesome! Keep me updated on that radius arm project!
Tinting windows on the ranger!!
I thought about that. I can try it. I've never seen a good DIY tint job though. lol.
@@rayregnogarage it’s a lot easier that it seems, I just did the tint on my 97 xlt with autozone static cling tint 20% front 5% rear. There’s 2 sizes, car and truck/suv and the car one works just fine.
I’ll give it a try

2wd or 4?
2wd
I was thinking about doing the rough country 4 inch lift with some glass should clear 35s? Untill I can afford my camburng arms
@@mattburke5356 Will this truck see dirt or is the lift just for looks? Even with fiberglass fenders, I think the best you'll MAYBE get out of that is a 33. Most of my friends ran 32 with that setup.. and they would all tell you that kit is just for looks. I would not recommend mashing on a truck with a drop bracket lift. If you're really itching to do something with it, put fenders on it, some 31s, maybe 32s, and call it a stadium truck til you can afford the Camburg setup.
Yea the lift was just for looks until I did the 9 inch swap and the camburg, so with the fenders and no lift it'll fit 32s?
1993 Ford ranger on 35" tires you should do a prerunner or rock crawler please
