Yasss! I was about to start developing this, and the software aspect was a daunting. Stoked that someone beat me to it!
I like how you can just make a cool enclosure whenever you want. That's so cool.
Haha, well thank you. I hope your enclosure comes out even better.
yes, that's really cool compared to those metal boxes
This is great! I may have to try this out for the new house! I think 10 zones should be enough. Great video!
Excellent video. Wow. Can’t wait to try this
This is a good writeup, thanks. This is an exceptionally in depth video especially at only 8:40.
Just some feedback at 3:20, this: "For those of you who do DNLA, this does have DNLA on it, and that's what separates it especially for those of you who DO DNLA." Anyone who didn't might be confused by this explanation. Just a nit, but it helps to explain more (there was time to introduce DNLA, then simply say that's a feature). Cheers
Great video, it is smart choice, thanks man
The source component supplier for this appears to be Cloudyx who make the CL-98WB. Found the company because that board is used in the TIC audio WBP-10 outdoor speakers.
Great video. Any chance you could do another one actually showing how you connect the system. I have a house wired with speakers. They are zoned with wall controls. Many of those no longer work. My question is how do I connect. I understand it needs 5 volts but not sure what you doo g with the three of the four wires from the connector. Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin
Thanks for the video. I wouldn’t have known about these diy modules without it. Just wish they would update with airplay2 even though 4STREAM is pretty decent
Thanks for sharing.
Is it supported by BubbleUpnp app also? In theory, it should because Up2Stream supports DLNA, but in practice it might depend on how standards compliant they are, so it's worth testing out.
Also, where did you get that nice wifi antenna on the DIY enclosure?
By the way, their ready product is called Cobblestone Muso for those who can't DIY. And also they have boards with Bluetooth, but unfortunately Cobblestone doesn't have Bluetooth.
I want that!
You have awesome lighting, match it with a good microphone!
Thanks man. I actually plan to get a new microphone this month. Appreciate it.
1. Is it possible to just open spotify and select a group from the speaker outl-selection in Spotify that u made in the software? 2. is the group still there next time u just go into Spotify?
I want to use this to build my kitchen speaker with an IC based class AB amplifier, 3.5 inch BMR drivers, 5v dc to dc converter, and powered with an inexpensive 19 volt laptop charger. Class D amplifiers are great for subwoofers and are energy efficient but, class AB amplifiers are less energy efficient but, they really shine in the reproduction accuracy of mids and highs over class D amplifiers.
I have the same Wi-Fi board and I believe I told you about this.
just by a The Dayton Audio WBA31 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth audio receiver makes wireless, multi-room streaming easy. plus it comes with a remote. i have 10 of these and they work with DNLA and Airplay.
Would this be able to be used for a car radio ...could you please message me I have some questions.
Great video! It would be interesting to see a diy sonos build. Speaker + Amp board + Up2Stream in one neat package. Sonos has the option to run in stereo mode, can you achieve that as well with the Up2Stream?
with 2 Up2Stream module, you can do that, one for left, one for right
@@samlee4833 thank you. But does that solution offer true stereo with left and right channel?
Hey! What's with the tinny audio in this video? Looks like you've got good lighting and camera so it's really surprising. Are you using the camera's internal mic or did you compress the audio a lot?
(Also what happened at 1:06 ? Haha sounds like a scratched vinyl record)
I tried to listen closely but if you covered this i missed it. Does it support stereo pairing two speakers?
Raspberry Pi Zero W + HiFiBerry DAC + Case + Volumio software = close to the same thing at close to the same price. I would love to see a comparison of the two.
That would be an interesting comparison.
I already use a Pi with HifiBerry and external power supply. This set consumes much more energy than the Arylic does! Furthermore, with Arylic you don't have to flash and set up the whole thing with software, so it's more convenient!
I for one just ordered three devices and I will test it.
You use a Pi or a Pi Zero? A Pi Zero will run on a 1 amp cell phone charger with a HiFiBerry attached.
@@MisterFastbucks You are right, I'm using a Pi. However, Arylic seems less hassle with SD card, flashing image and all the software configuration stuff.
It may be, which is why I suggested the comparison. My gut says there is a similar level of setup with both devices. But the setup is more hardware-based (soldering and fabrication or installation in an enclosure) with Acrylic and more software-based with a Volumio.
In my case, I'm only using Volumio as an Airplay receiver. So there's very little to configure.
Hello, I wish to play the same audio received through an audio jack over a number of speakers distributed all over my house wirelessly. I would like to avoid the mobile part. Can you suggest me anything? I would like to make a DIY setup.
hi does it support HomeKit? you mention airplay, do you mean airplay 2 ?
Hi, very nice tutorial, question do you need 1 board per speaker or 1 per pair?
You need 1 for every amplifier. You can have as many speakers as you can hooked up to that amplifier. Most amplifiers hook up 2, so you would be able to hook up 2 speakers to it.
hey man, great video, question... what of I want to connect multiple phone to it and all to the same soundsystem, my case is I want to convoy every device at ones in the same soundsystem, without have to connect disconnect all the time
You can connect to all devices at once in the same app. They show up as a list.
Hey buddy, i have had trouble with my 3.5mm input from the arylic to my inputs on my receiver. I thought it was my rca cables then maybe it was the device not working. I plugged my speakers in on the arylic and bingo it worked. I plugged my 3.55 mm to my phone then to the receiver and bingo it worked. The only thing I can conclude is that the 3.5 mm on the arylic doesn't work? Crazy this is happening on 2 arylic transmitters. Do you have any recommendations? I have a bunch of these. I went nuts with their transmitters. They are great when they work!
This is only a module to play different music in each room right. Is it Alexa compatible.
Hi, thanks for the cool video. One question, is the module usable also from windows or mac pcs for regular movies, youtube etc.?
Forget about watching movies or videos. 2-3 seconds delay. Everyone is hiding this information. You dont know until you buy it.
Dose it support Apple music?
Hi,
Thanks for the video. After that I bought 2x modules to start my multiroom project.
I am facing some issues regarding background noise. Did you have it ?if yes how did you solve it ?
Cheers,
I don't have any issues with background noise. I'd contact arylic, to see if they know what might be happening
Had a static issue using chrome cast audios. Had them powered from a power strip with usb outputs. Switched them to small generic 5v/1a usb power adapters & static went away. Hope that helps
Like berdude said it’s most likely “dirty” power which has some AC noise. Try a battery powered portable power source to check. Also try different usb power sources.
Just a small correction, it's DLNA.
can i use this on a sonos play 5 with Recycle Mode activated, and reuse the unit?
Depends on how it's done. If I remember correctly the power supplies are separate so they're easy just to reuse.
Ideally you'd want to tap in just before the amplifier if there's any way to keep the build in filter for woofer and tweeter. If that's not possible you can always just pair this module up with a class D amplifier off eBay and then you'd need a high/low filter of some sort. There you'll have multiple options. Before amplifier and after amplifier. Before is hardest to do but also gives much more opportinuties.
So yes you can surely use it to reuse a play 5 depending on your definition of reuse.
IMHO I'd use a bluetooth module instead though. I have a speaker with this Linkplay A31 module in it and always found the WiFi functionality a bit limited. Fine for playing from a few select sources but bluetooth while not a "casting" in same way as linkplay or sonos it's just much more versatile. But hey it's easy just to put two modules in while you're at it. Linkplay and bluetooth ;) Please choose a high quality bluetooth module or your experience will be accordingly ;)
this would be sweet if it had airplay 2...
you dont need airplay 2 for audio. it will cost a lot more to licence and you dont have additional features. so this will never come from arylic
@@rolliseventeen The airplay it is using is definitely NOT licensed. Airplay was hacked many years ago and the code was put on the internet. So many people use airplay in a non official capacity. Airplay 2 was hacked in 2019 but the information hasn't been made public yet. Once the information is public, i can see devices like this implementing it.
@@lsdave i cant proof if it is licensend or not, spotify connect should also be licensend i think, but i really cant say. do you think apple has no problem with this?
Cool video! Do you know if this will work with AirPlay 2? I see that you mention regular AirPlay, but it seems that any DIY devices such as Dayton Audios hifly products will only support the 1st generation. Thanks man!
I honestly don't know. I'll ask my contact and see if he knows. I don't have any Apple Devices to test myself, but I'm sure in probably have a friend who has an airplay 2 device.
I just heard back from the company. It currently does not work with airplay 2, but they are working on that
123Toid thanks for checking man 👍🏼
@@jameshoverson7686 you're welcome!
so far from our knowledge, airplay1 is ok ,but using mac ,control by itunes airplay ,you can do multi control for all devices, similar as airplay2 ,iphone then not .
This looks similar in function to Dayton Audio's Hi-Fly line of adapters that have been around for several years. I just downloaded Muzo and it works with Dayton Audio's Hi-Fly products. I think the products at Parts Express are cheaper.
Dayton is selling BT-Amp boards, but WiFI-Amp boards? Did I miss something?
You are right. The Dayton Wi-Fi Models (like the WBA31) and Up2Stream both use the LinkPlay system. Brands like Audiocast, Audiopro, and Muzo use it too. You can get small external modules using this system (with 5V in and 3.5mm audio out) for about the same price as the Up2Stream, but the Up2Stream is the only internal board I have seen.
try us ,ours will be different soon ,we keep update with new features, such as deezer, alexa control soon :)..
@@Arylic And as I already mentioned on another video: AirPlay 2 would be really awesome!
Up2Stream Pro allows TWS / Stereo Sync (send one channel to each portable speaker) over BT 5.0 or Wifi on a small board that can be combined with amplifier boards, power supplies, etc of your choice. It's a very specific thing that many people have been looking for, and it's only similar to the Hi-Fly system in the sense that they are both used in wireless audio scenarios. It's a killer price for what they are offering, too.
Would this work with no internet from your own nas music library? NO CLOUD.
I have a Sonos Play 5 (1st Gen) that I want to put the Up2Stream amp 2.0 in to. As the Sonos is a 2.1 system can you recommend a crossover or will I not need one?
there is a up2stream amp 2.1 now, I just bought it, impressive stuff in my opinion
Does this work from a computer or more specifically, a NAS storage device? All of my music is on my NAS which of course is connected to the network, Sonos does support retrieving files from a connected network device such as a NAS. Thanks..
It does through DLNA. Like I said, I didn't test that though.
@@Toid cool
How to reset this version of up2stream mini?
Did anyone tested with the sonos app? Will it find this speakers and add it?
Has anybody found the version coming with enclosure? Was even searching for 3d printable designs for this but found nothing. Currently waiting for my boards to arrive, then maybe I start design a enclosure to put on thingiverse if somebody is Interested.
Hello everyone! :)
I searching a Speakermodule for building a wireless stereosystem:
Left speaker left channel. Right speaker right channel.
Is this possible with 2 Modules? Maybe with some workaround to bridge the specific output-side to the (killed) different one and vice versa.
Thanks to everyone for infos! :)
Yes. This has stereo pairing on it.
Is it wifi 6 compatible?
Can I use this for pc audio? Like for a home theater pc?
If there's an option for manual latency compensation it could work.
I love the concept... I bought 4 of these to set up music throughout the house. They are easy to set up (honing my woodworking and soldering skills to build a nice box). However, and this is a biggie, I can not seem to set up shared mode - playing music in single rooms works find, trying to link two rooms fail - I get an invalid password message. No response from makers of software or acrylic. Any help?
You mention MUSO app... 4STREAM is recommended-and what I downloaded. MUSO appears to have different functionality. Or did I hear you wrong? Any support is much appreciated.
@@philipcecchini5474 they switched to 4stream, so you downloaded the correct app. I've never heard of that issue. What are you trying to stream?
Thanks for your prompt comments... I use the 4STREAM app.. I have tried to stream music from a local file (thumb drive on my router), music from my iPhone, RUclips using airplay from my iphone and iPad. iPhone X running iOS 13.3.1
@@philipcecchini5474 that's weird. You shouldn't have a password for the 4stream app or devices. It sounds like an apple password issue. But I've never come across that issue before.
Could somebody help me get the following setup:
I have a pc, and would like to make it the source of audio, or sometimes mobile, or mic.
Then would like to have a speaker in every room (5 rooms total) and all play from the same source.
What DIY parts/apps do i need to have this setup?
We can help you with that in the forum www.toidsdiyaudio.com/community
how do these companies do this with their proprietary apps? Sonos, Turtlebox, etc.
Hi There, Nice video!
I was looking for a Sonos alternative and stumbled on your video.
I wanne have a go at this but could you answer these questions for me:
1 - can I connect a speaker to it directly? Or do I need an amplifier between the up2stream and the speaker?
2 - Can I stream music to it via commands from the Google assistant?
With this module you do need an amplifier. However, you can use something like this: bit.ly/2TRqtne or this bit.ly/2JmyxZw which have amplifiers. I am not sure if it works with Google assistant. However, you can e-mail here and they can tell you for sure: info@arylic.com
I bought 4 of these units. Found them to be very glitchy, I.E. start/ stop playing mid song, playing a random song not selected, and most importantly playing a few milliseconds out of sync. very irritating considering that is why I got them in the first place.
alexa supported?
I know nothing about audio. I just know that I want it.
Can you do a video using this with a Apple iPod hifi speaker?
I don't have any whole products in my house, so it'd be hard to do that at this time.
I want to integrate a module of these in my 2 apple ipod Hifis, one left, one right. Still researching if the plan is possible atm. If you want to use only one Ipod Hifi i am sure it will work.
I highly suspect their AirPlay implementation is unofficial, based on a hacked protocol implementation which is available "out there in the wild". For some time I was in Apple's MFi program, so I know how demanding they could be. For legal AirPlay you need an agreement with Apple, which involves installing a special security chip and also has some very specific rules you have to comply with; for example, such as having an inbuilt speaker in your system, which Arylic clearly doesn't have.
Is frequency response of 20 to 20khz is enough for HiRes audio?
Yes
@@Toid my amp is capable of responding frequency between 10 to 36khz.. can I use this streamer to play falc wave format to get good response? Please reply
@@PracticalGangu High Res audio has to do with bit rate not frequency response. Frequency Response of 20hz - 20Khz is the human hearing range, which is why manufacturers use it. That's not to say that they won't play lower or higher, that's just typically what you will see. Some manufacturers will show You higher responses, but that's typically more of a marketing strategy, since it is inaudible.
@@Toid thank you for your valuable time to solve my doubts...
@@Toid being an audiphile, I was so disappointed when at a science museum to find out my ears did not hear anything above 16Khz, but kids could. I guess all those rock concerts ruined them.
So just to clarify one quick thing? From a single device like an iPhone I could set 3 of these things up in different areas and play 3 different songs from my library on my phone on each one? I wouldn’t have to play songs from my library on one and iheart radio on an other and some other channel on the third right?
That is correct. You can also play different iHeartRadio stations in every room or TuneIn radio or different songs from your library. You do not have to have different sources selected for each room. That's why I think it's a very powerful unit
Multiroom streaming means you can play same music in sync by just setting one source from your phone or play different music in different up2stream.
Why is it limited to ten?
People use this system in blocks of flats to target their victims and gas light them. Using several neighbours. So someone can be making a noise in another flat and have it on speaker in flat nearer the target.
Can I run my sonos speakers on it? I hope someone will build something like this to let us use the speakers that sonos bricked!
Does this mean anybody who walks into my house, connect to my WiFi, my speakers would show up in Spotify?
I'm basically looking for a alternative to ChromeCast Audio. Those are pretty expensive
They would have to have the app - which is a free download
@@Toid Ah. I thought I could find an alternative to CCA. I just want my speaker to appear on WiFi.
Basically a Cast speaker. To cast Spotify etc
Doesn't the echo dot do multiroom audio and the 2nd gens are ~$20 refurbished.
Sort of. It does, but not to the extent something like this or Sonos offers.
try ,then you will know the difference, it's designed for audiophile at this price .
No deezer? :/
It has now
Sonos killer ? No. Maybe when you will be able to play a movie without sound delay in multiroom mode.
For me something is killing Sonos when I can have my own High End speakers multiroom in an open source accessible manner. How often do people need to watch the same movie synchronous in multiple rooms? I don´t think it´s a common application. I don´t have Sonos but a friend is complaining about being limited in the applications of his Sonos.
@@karlotto8925 is not about watching a movie in multiple rooms, the ideea is to use it as wireless speakers so you can connect as many as you want in any location, and more important, you will use more than 2 speakers for a movie, and thats where it will fail
I always regarded Sonos as "pretty things for rich, dumb people who don't care about audio." ...But, as you note, there apparently weren't many alternatives. And who doesn't want multi-room? Wireless? ...!!! ...??? However...AAAARRRGGGHHH!!! Based on the utility you outlined (or implied), I ordered the parts and smashed them together. A few problems. Firstly, services (e.g. Spotify) require premium/paid before they'll let you cast. So there's that. But mostly, DLNA DOESN'T WORK. Lest you think this doesn't matter, for those of us who have collections of music and/or audiobooks -- OR JUST WANT A MECHANISM TO USE WIFI TO STREAM REAL-TIME AUDIO instead of stupid Bluetooth -- this device has a lot of promise, but fails. I was completely unable to get Stream What you Hear to identify/recognize the device. I just want to cast audio, in high fidelity, to other components in other rooms on my network. For those wishing to do the same, this device, unfortunately, doesn't do it. Sonos sucks. Bluetooth sucks. This device... Sigh... I guess it's good for DIY'ers who just want to stream cloud tunes from their phone.
It's definitely not for everyone. I did mention Spotify, because I thought that was something that people should be aware of. When this review came out, I had not tested dnla so I mentioned that I didn't test it. But recently I got a few more pieces of equipment for review. So I enabled dnla from Windows and shared my music folder. I had absolutely no issues with streaming music via DNLA. I would definitely encourage you to check your settings. You shouldn't have issues.
Thanks for thoughtful reply. As a DIY music geek, I do suggest you explore ways to simply stream via WiFi, as mentioned. I'll re-visit DLNA/folder sharing, but -- as you know -- not the same thing playing via smartphone vs. a post-configured stream which has been properly room-equalized via an RTA/Equalizer APO/Peace. For the Love of the seven gods (old/new), please, let's figure out how to do this! Thx for being you.
You mean DLNA
Very cool but costly
That is interesting. I was actually thinking it was cheap, lol. I guess it is all a matter of perspective. The way I looked at it, is 1 sonos speaker will cost close to $350-$500 at a minimum. You can get away doing 10 of these for less than the cost of 1 sonos speaker. But it definitely isn't a dirt cheap option either. So i get that.
Can you build a stereo pair of 2 module?
Had a brief stint with wireless audio by way of a *Dayton Audio WFA02* Their Hi-Fly app looks like a clone of Muzo.
The reason I stopped is because WiFi audio experience ≠ Bluetooth audio experience. With Bluetooth if you have capable devices you enable them and hear sound. With WiFi audio you can stream some things but not others. I can't just start the laptop, put on a movie and have its audio streamed wirelessly to a set of speakers in the house. It requires software, and no software I've tried (all of them) could do it reliably without delay.
So, to recap. In order to play wirelessly you need:
1. WiFi router
2. WiFi audio receiver WFA02
3. Dayton Audio Hi-Fly app (which is crap)
4. Hi-Fly configs
5. VB Cable
6. VB Cable configs and quick-switching helpers
7. foo_out_upnp (for example using Foobar)
9. foo_record
10. Foobar configs and accelerators
The processing and network overhead must be horrendous.
When the network was under heavy load playback was affected!
To play wired you need
1. audio cable
Regular folks abuse tech with wild abandon but I like to think I value frugality. This was going to bug me to no end so I stopped.
There are limitations with wireless audio, as well as wired and Bluetooth. Fo instance, Bluetooth is great if you want to send it to one device. But if you want to hook up multiple rooms, Bluetooth isn't capable of doing that. Wired is great and you can hook up multiple rooms, but you have to have those hooked up wherever you run the wires to. So you're limited in placement and you have to wire your house for it. So it's always a trade-of, you just have to figure out what trade-offs are most important for you
@@Toid If you notice in the list, the problems come from lack of adequate software on Windows. On Mac with AirPlay you _can_ stream desktop audio without lag, I'm told.
Our household problem now is we have a Miracast pocket projector and we need to connect an audio cable, run it over the couch to the opposite wall where the amp and speakers are. We considered moving the amp (too unwieldy to have it on the couch side), going wireless (how?) and strapping a band of concealable audio tape around the room (pretty involved, don't own the apartment). When not projecting the audio cable is plugged into the laptop, near a corner of the room. Do you have any suggestions for simplifying this kind of set-up? Thanks for the reply!
@@leeroyescu I am not sure if this will help you, but their new unit, you can plug up an aux and stream it ruclips.net/video/fArjOl1Z2eo/видео.html
Or just use Chromecast audio
That is another great option. This has a more features, at basically the same cost. Some of those include NAS, DLNA and playing different sources in different rooms from the app. But if you don't need those features, Chromecast is another great product to use. Thanks for the great point!
@@Toid it's also support Spotify connect?
@@HaimPeretz I'm not sure about Spotify connect. It does support Spotify out of the box, but you need the premium version of Spotify to connect multiple rooms.
@@HaimPeretz supported, you may check arylic official youtube channel see some tips there..

DIY > use an app

what if I want to do it myself?
10 device limit

let me guess, the pro version of the app doesn't have this limit.
nice ad
Pro version? What are you taking about? It's hardware that is the limitation. They don't have a pro version of the app
chromecast is $35, XiaomiStick is cheapper. More value I think
Ok google supported??
RIP Chromecast Audio. Get one while they're still available.
Tim Wilson i still like the chromecast audio because it’s easy to set up and works everywhere… price is about he same at $35. can this unit support chromecasts? also, i’d prefer an ethernet jack so you don’t bog down your wireless access point with streams going to all of your different zones / rooms at the same time ... at least with Chromecast audio device you can connect through ethernet using adapter and free up your Wi-Fi access point.
Desk--Fi tier shit
Do you know the Raspberry Pi exists?
One big problem is that it connects ONLY via 2.4Ghz. No 5Ghz, no Ethernet. Sorry, 2.4Ghz is unreliable interference prone overloaded garbage. Would be nice if companies making products like this (and other IOT type stuff) would start recognizing that and offer other options. Hardwire Ethernet would be most reliable.
Another is that it seems to *require* using a specific proprietary app on a smartphone to set it up. I don't see an option to use a regular web browser on a regular PC for setup/configuration. This is not DIY friendly at all. Its just a cheaper version of sonos that you have to wire yourself.
@@r6u356une56ney they have a bunch of new product since this one has released. They do offer ethernet and a 3.5 mm input jack and Bluetooth. But using a 3.5 mm Jack or Bluetooth, you can stream virtually anything.
Most people don't get this excited unless they are being sponsored by the manufacturer that makes the product that is creating so much excitement. I wonder..... are you being sponsored by said product?
