    Today's vlog really resonated with me. I started sewing in the 80's (yep, proud old lady here) because I was a high fashion teen living in a very rural place. I continued through college when I could. I left off sewing garments for quilting in my 20's and my 30's brought a a lot of change where I needed small portable crafts so knitting entered my life. Now in the season on my 50's I’m faced with body changes due to induced menopause, chemotherapy, and breast surgery. I joke that I have plenty of tissue to give and it will be nice not to have to do a huge full bust adjustment every time I sew a dress or shirt.
    As someone born with a very feminine body but always preferred menswear styling your thoughts on gender were also appreciated. We are fluid creatures…. Some days I want a menswear three piece tailored suit, other days a cat suit. Life is to be lived not wished for.

    On the talent vs skill thing, I get it. I learned to knit and crochet at like five or six and I learned to sew at eight. So, especially because I’m still under thirty, a lot of people look at what I make and say they wish they had my talent and what they don’t see is the 20ish years of practice behind me.

    I have been sewing since I was 10 but didn't have the confidence to make my own (public facing) clothes until 2 years ago.
    Like you, I got tired of not finding clothes that fit or account for fluctuation in body size.
    Sew...... That became my mission! To find and make items that are transcending trends and can make me feel good regardless of my body's state.
    I have a love for natural fibers and I'm totally leaning into it!
    Knit, sew, spin, and craft on 😉

    Tazhi, I first found you through sewing on a sew liberated post. I thought, what a well a styled confident artist?! Then come to find out you knit AND play D&D?! But through Me Made May, I saw you just SHINE. I'm so glad that you are finding YOU through your style/sewing and I'm so GLAD you are here sharing your joy & the honoring of YOU.
    Also, I have the sewing machine & some fabric & some free patterns. For me, my sewing barrier is that it seems like SO MUCH WORK. It's that beginners anxiety, ya know?

    • @stitchesandstarlight
      @stitchesandstarlight  Год назад

      I totally get that! My first project was a basic skirt because I knew I could make it and I knew I would wear it and I was hooked and from there, I just made more and more complex things. Start with something small and easy like a woven tank top with a bias bound neckline to help you practice some straight lines and hemming. I highly recommend the Fabric Store Agustina Boxy top as a first project.

    Thank you for being so open and honest about such a hard subject to talk about. I'm so glad that you are taking up ALL the space and coming into your authentic self. It's really inspiring. My barriers right now are just the headspace, I think. It takes a lot of mental effort to learn new things and to troubleshoot, and I have been overwhelmed with life so much that I just need the comforting squishy things and sewing requires me to put all that away for enough time to complete a project. That feeling of wearing something completely me-made is unlike anything else, though isn't it? I really want to make pants though! Maybe next year. A goal is set!

    I don't remember not knowing how to sew. My first memory of making a garment from start to finish without assistance was just before I started Kindergarten, so I was 4 years old. Having always been very tall and ridiculously slender, there has never in my life been a time when I could purchase off the rack. Recently menopause changed my body dramatically in ways even pregnancy hadn't impacted (I think my bust enters a room 30 seconds before the rest of me and I kind of resemble the prow of a ship. Very, very unnerving) and in a very short period of time. It is like I'm learning to sew for myself all over again, and boy have I made a few doozy mistakes altering patterns. The days of knowing by rote what I'm going to have to adjust for a proper fit appear to be behind me for the moment. My brain needs to catch up with my new body. Grins ~T-rouble

      The funny thing is that I can look at someone else and know what I need to do, but my brain just doesn’t want to cooperate when it comes to myself. Sorta like I’m always a little startled when I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror. Where did my mother come from? Lol

Maybe you can start with making the adjustments for what your mother would need to get thru the mental block?..

    Thank you Tazhi for this video and for being so open with us! I relate with so much things that you said. I’m 5’9”, broad shoulders, small breast (breast hypoplasia IGT), much smaller waist than hips, etc. Finding clothes that fits well but that I also like is really hard. I felt doomed when I was a teenager and lost weight and realized that I still would not fit into most clothes and would never be “smaller” like all my friends. Now I’m 33 and much kinder to my body, but it took work to get there. I sewed a little bit 15 years ago, but the commercial patterns were not fitting much better than clothes in store and I did not have the knowledge to adapt them properly. I had not realize that the sewing world, just like the knitting world, had been taken over by independent designers releasing more size inclusive patterns. I might dust off my sewing machine eventually!

    • @stitchesandstarlight
      @stitchesandstarlight  Год назад +1

      Indie patterns have been a game changer - there are so many out there with different aesthetics, designs and inspiration and the instructions are so much more detailed than they used to be. I think if you give it a go again, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

    Mesmerized by the spinning. Thank you for sharing a bit of yourself with the world. I find myself in this place where my shape has changed dramatically since pre pandemic. Gym closing had a huge impact for my obsessive working out and over focusing on what I ate. I honestly think a reset was needed as far as body image. Settling for baggy at the moment but desiring to find what is not only comfortable but is a bit more stylish.

    That was all too relatable in a lot of ways. I'm really glad you're standing up for the idea that anyone should get to explore however they want without having to justify themselves by defining themselves with a "correct" category for what they want to explore or present with.
    Also, yeah, sewing things that finally fit is SUCH freedom.
    Unfortunately, personally my barrier is literal physical ability. I've done a fair amount in the past, but disability is getting more and more, well, disabling, and I've found that the more I need help with things like this, the more people who used to be happy to help no longer want to. Combine that with no crafting space where I could leave things so I can do them in tiny increments, and, well.
    It's really frustrating because I've reached a point where I have the knowledge to make much better things than I used to, but no longer have the ability to do them lol.
    But if I ever get the possibility of sewing again, what I'd really love to make is menswear that will still fit a very curvy body lol.

    I really enjoyed your reflections today around your "me made" clothes. I'm relatively new to sewing and have already experienced my own barriers (in my head) around what to make vs body image, gender confirmity and (as a person in her late 40's) "age" appropriate clothing. I love that you found what you like to wear and how to express yourself through experimentation and play. I feel the weight of "if you're making something it has to have longevity and fit with everything else in your wardrobe" but this is a great reminder to try things out within your own asthetic and bring some levity to the making process.

    • @stitchesandstarlight
      @stitchesandstarlight  Год назад +1

      I feel that weight as well and I try to balance it with fun, frivolous pieces that may become the timeless pieces in their own right. We deserve space and room to play and to decide what our wardrobe looks like and if it means experimenting, then I wish you joyful discovery!

I finally picked up a couple collared button up shirts from threadup to layer, because I don't enjoy making those. But almost everything else I wear I made (or in some cases thrift flipped).

    I LOVE hearing you talk about exploring style on your specific body! There are some outfits I have that are not "traditionally flattering", but make me feel whimsical or daring or like I just walked out of the forest. It's fun not to put yourself in a "style box" when you have at least 5 favorite clashing styles at any one given moment (literally my life)!
    And also, what is the background music you're using? I honestly just want to play it on repeat all weekend while I craft.

    • @stitchesandstarlight

      Yes, 100% this. I throw flattering in the garbage and if it makes me feel like a jaunty little lad or an escaped satyr from the feywild, that's what matters to me and brings me joy. I find that when you feel good in your clothes, you look good in your clothes so I am all about prioritizing my joy right now in my wardrobe.
      I found the music on epidemic sound which is what I used to make sure RUclips doesn't kidnap my videos, but here's a link to it for all of your background noise needs - ruclips.net/video/AePAkSwq00k/видео.html
