MAJOR WARNING: NEVER USE CONCRETE FOR FIRE PITS. Any absorbed moisture can literally cause the concrete to explode under high heat. Always use a product that is rated for high temperature.
Well givien that this video doesn't even give proper instruction and we're left to guess, i would suggest no one follow this idea without doing further research.
You know what fascinated me most!?! When you took off the entire cement out from the bucket without pounding it, and guess what you only used hot water!?! 😲 I think i learned some new tricks from you! Thanks for that!
Really cool, although. Use Fire clay in the cement mix to greatly improve resistance to the heat. Moisten the hardened cement for the first few days to harden it and be sure allow it to cure / harden for 21 to 28 days prior to the first firing-and start with small fire-increasing it gradually.
i was thinking about that, can you add some powder fireclay or what exact product were you thinking, trying to save some money by making instead of buying ty?
Lots of exploding cement comments on here and it depends solely on the cement used. If you use regular cement, then it will likely crack or possibly explode if the cement was wet. However there are cements made for this type of application. They are usually called high heat furnace or high temperature refractory cements. Those types of cement are non porous and can withstand direct flame without cracking or exploding. Provided you set (vibrate the concrete) and cure them correctly to avoid air pockets. The non porous nature of these types of cements, will prevent moisture from absorbing into the cement and causing catastrophic explosions to occur. Basically use all products for what they were intended for and read the product instructions to make sure you are using it correctly.
You can greatly improve the strength of the hardened concrete by keeping it damp for a month or so, after it sets. Cement does not harden by drying, but by reacting with water. Longer reaction time = more strength.
Thank you for that. Because I needed a great little camping stove, and this just went into my favorites. But since it'll be slammed into my storage along with all my other camping gear, the stronger it is, the better it is.... :)

New subscriber on May 23, '22. This rocket stove is new to me and I will make one in a week or two. I have several new cooking items that I have saved for the rocket stoves and plan to "break them in" this hurricane season. I am on the Alabama Gulf Coast and always like to be prepared for the June to November wild weather months. Thanks for the great video.
I see that the exploding cement topic has already been addressed👍Mainly its the water trapped inside. Even if its the correct cement, it needs to be slowly heated over the course of a few days. The the cement needs to be completely dry inside and out
Okay, people, be wary of this thing: chances are, you'll keep it outdoors. That means it will get wet. Concrete absorbs moisture like a sponge. So when you fire it up, the moisture inside turns to steam and there's a better-than-average chance it will blow up like a bomb. You could get hurt. Seriously hurt. The guy who made this video knows this - if not, he certainly should. And there should be some warning about it.
Also, I've seen bigger fire pit builds that don't require the reinforcement wires (rebar), since this one is so small, would it even be necessary?? It's not bearing a load at all so what's the point of that? Seems like steps that aren't needed to me.
Several people have requested a material list in the description, which is a great idea. What is the oil in the beginning? What type of cement mix to buy to withstand high temperatures? What is the green and white objects placed in the bucket? This would be good info to have to make this more of a "how to" video and less of a "watch me make" If you are not going to provide a materials list, then just change the title of the video to Watch Me Cast a Stove From A Paint Bucket"
If I had to guess - oil is probably old motor oil, white object is packing Styrofoam, green is that material that florists use to hold flower arrangements. It looks like most of the materials are repurposed/salvaged waste products. Some info I found on mixing cement for stoves: www.traditionaloven.com/tutorials/concrete.html#:~:text=Calcium%20Aluminate%20cement%20and%20Lime,cement%20replaced%20with%20the%20lime.
The white material seems to be simple styrofoam. The green one, i think, is that kind os sponge used in fake flowers arrangements. The oil is any oil, even already burnt, to release the bucket. The cement mix...is one capable of withstand high temperatures (ask guidance to a salesman in your area). Give a list is cool, but the video is very intuitive.
You have to use a type of cement called”Refractory cement” for this type of stove.Regular cement can not withstand the heat and will crack. Can’t believe he would put that much work into this project and not know this.Otherwise a great build.
To increase the concrete strength and to minimise moisture in the concrete, use a vibrating saw ( jigsaw, sabresaw, multitool etc) without a blade, on the outside of the bucket to vibrate the mix immediately after filling the bullet. Having said that, this type of fire is VERY dangerous, and can explode due to the moisture in it expanding as it heats.
Very Cool. The human's ingenuity never ceases to amaze! If I may, one thing I might've done, is put "more foam at the bottom, and put it to one edge. The reason being, it would be the size of a small metal drawer/tray, that could be easily removed for the ashes... ;)
Never ever pick up a pan at 200°C full of oil with bare hands! Oh, and wear body armour when using this stove coz there's a damn good chance it will explode.
Thank you for this video. Subscribed. Looks like a neat idea but the other posters are correct: You need refractory cement, and you need to keep it wet for four weeks so that the chemical reaction can proceed, for maximum strength. Also, after a month of being kept wet, you need to fire it several times with a very small fire so that any remnant moisture can be driven off.
My favorite part of this is the music. Not kidding. Also, if this guy doesn’t also have his own cooking series too then he’s totally selling himself short.
I love your work man ... very nice and neat ..... I would love to make one of those .. would you please tell me what kind of cement I need to use?? I would really appreciate that a lot . Thank you for sharing this with us by the way.
So cool, but I wish you put like some words, or a link to words. Some sort of diagram/measurements? What's the goo at the beginning? How'd you cut that foam so perfectly? And agreed you should sell "just add cement" kits, you'd make good money!
Wow, when I first read the title I was* disgusted thinking about a stove made out of paint and cement, but Watching this video satisfyingly showed me how unique and magical a simple process like this can turn out to be nothing more but absolute perfection. Spot on, if you’ve seen concrete explode you know it ain’t gonna end well if a person’s face or body are in the way.
Any brand/product recommendations?

As long as it's, not to dense and the water vapor can escape it will be ok

Vibrate the bucket with a hand sander after the main pour and it will remove the air bubbles for the face of the casting.
Or tap the bucket with a mallet all around and that will release the air bubbles too, if you don’t have a power sander.
Excellent Pro Tip
Good tip!
Frickin’ genius tip right there
Or vibrate it with a concrete vibrator, they really work the best.
