I remember my dad showing these films back to back one night and while the first one was amazing and stands on its own really well, this sequel was a great redemption story for Doyle.
One of the most underrated sequels ever made! I loved this one, and it's a French Connection movie that actually takes place in France! The detox scenes were very well done too. If you saw the original, you need to see this too!
I didn’t really dig the characterization of Popeye in the sequel. It was a bit on the nose of being the roughneck American maverick doing whatever he wanted. The lines were cheesy and felt like callbacks to the original and fan service. But I think it’s only because the original was so amazing and understated- and 1970s NYC was a crucial character in it. As a stand-alone movie, I think this would be amazing in it’s own right. Just a tough act to follow. Very interesting trivia on the title being the first with a II in it!

I agree. It's rare that I find the sequel superior to the original.
No way is this film better than the original... it has none of the energy. It is good, though, and a worthy sequel.

I hadn't seen it until around 2019. I don't want to spoil anyone else's time watching. LOL
