Xiu Xiu is my favorite Let's Play series.
The melody in the beginning was stuck in my head, I had one of those panicky moments of not knowing what song it was from.
Indeed. If you're wondering that because you find the music strange or even unappealing, it's an acquired taste I think...I genuinely love Xiu Xiu, they calm me down and piss me off whenever I need to vent through music. My friend suggested that their music isn't for the mentally stable, so there's that >.

this was the first song i heard from Xiu Xiu after Jamie Stewart was featured on a Horse the Band (my fave band back in 2009). i was mostly a metalhead but this song got me hooked. it really helped open up my world to more unique and "abrasive" music. been a fan ever since!
This video has sort of an Ecco the Dolphin feel to it, especially the cryptic dialogue.
I can't believe I've lived sixteen years of my life without knowing this band existed... It's like... everything I've ever enjoyed in music comes together here! The technical distortion of breakcore, the dreaminess of bands like Earlimart, the sadness of Radiohead... but then all mashed up and combined in the most beautiful way! Unbelievable...

Xiu Xiu does pop music. To critique it intelligently you should at least have an appreciation for the form. The best pop music takes existing, recognizable forms and subverts them, injecting something extraordinary into something everyday and familiar.
In this case for example you have the verse/chorus structure and the simple IV/I chord progression, but also harsh, unusual timbres, dissonant sounds, and other moments where the song appears to wander away from its expected trajectory.

The video is almost exactly like a Pocahontas game I used to have on Gameboy as a kid! The tall tree stump and the water and...almost everything, that's crazy!
