Recently while making this video, I told my dad about what has been going on and he just responded with "All dads want to get in shape," and he thought the issue was dumb, which I can't really blame him for...
Anyways, did anyone get a sudden urge to lift weights after watching this episode? Hopefully it's not just me... 😅😅

As someone who struggled with weight myself, I don’t think this scene was fatphobic. They just want to promote healthy living. The complainers idea that kids can’t ever see their parents feel bad about their bodies is ludicrous. It can be distressing, but Bluey doesn’t sugarcoat reality like it’s complainers want it to. Parents can feel sad too, and that’s what’s great about Bluey is that they make the parents feel like real people instead of caricatures. I think people are just looking for reasons to hate Bluey

As someone who’s dealt with body image thoughts, I thought the episode did a great job showing Bandit eventually being okay with himself and still being fit and enjoying it the way he can.
It’s obvious not everyone can lose weight the same way. Sometimes, there are things out of our control. But ultimately, being active can still make a difference and you can still love your body regardless.
I don’t think the episode was even remotely “fat phobic”. It did actually feel nice seeing Bandit happy with himself and still being active in his own way to make it fun for him.

I think the problem here is the same problem social media always have, they over analyze everything. The whole point of the episode is encouraging kids to stay healthier and do exercise and encourage parents be healthier and do exercise because in some age that shit become dangerous for them. But yeah people like to over analyze every thing like the show’s objective public wasn’t little kids that their first thought will be, “haha he is touching his belly”.

  • @brianaburch9854

This episode is hinted at in every bluey ep. Nearly every adult is 'off the sweets' or not eating chips or some other variation of a diet. Pretty much everyone has stood there and grabbed their belly or stood on the scale and not been happy. As adults we often forget how much seeing us do that can effect the kids in our lives (even teachers do this by accident). It's up to us to talk to our kids about body image issues and how even grownups can mess up. Having the end of the episode be more about health than weight loss was a journey for Bandit as much as it was for Bingo, Bluey, and the audience.

  • @isaacstevenson2960
    @isaacstevenson2960 Год назад +62

One thing I would add is that Bandit didn’t exercise purely because of constant mocking. He decided to exercise by choice. He did it because HE WANTED to. Not because someone was forcing him to. I don’t know how common this is(in media not real life because I do know that in real life this is very common unfortunately), but most episodes of shows that I’ve seen that deal with this subject matter sees the characters pushing themselves way too far physically or completely avoid eating which is even more unhealthy. Bandit knew his limits and knew how much to exercise in his range while entertaining his kids(further proving he’s the best dad). In short, Bandit knew how much to exercise and did it purely by his own desire to get more fit.

I’m not ashamed to say that I am overweight, when I watched this episode I didn’t think twice about the opening scene. Then to see that people were getting upset over it made me confused at first. Me personally as someone who is going to the gym and eating healthy regular to try to lose weight, I found this episode relatable. Respectfully, I don’t see this episode as offensive in any way and I think it’s because of the last scene. It shows that bandit is doing this for his health just as I am. I guess I can see why people would be upset if the end scene wasn’t there but as of right now I don’t personally take offense. For those who find the episode offensive, please do not take offense to my standpoint. I respect you and I respect your opinions on the matter.

The episode isn't promoting fat-shaming, it was misinterpreted.
People have different experiences with their bodies.
Yet some people have gone trough real body trauma, and it may have triggered them and it changed the way they reacted to the scene.
The scene is not hinting at any fat-shaming, it just tells you how to care about yourself, and your health.
But the way I see it, it could've gotten way worse, like someone telling Bandit directly that he's fat, or laughing at him about it.
Hopefully we'll forget about this drama because I'm finally over it.

  • @Introbulus

Even though neither Chili nor Bandit seem to really have any health issues, being disappointed in how you look or how you feel or how much you weigh is a real feeling even for those who do practice good eating and exercise habits, and it can be especially daunting when you also have to take care of children and work, and watch out for your children's eating habits.
I think this is a very realistic depiction of that sort of behavior. And I think saying that there needs to be some underlying health problem before taking action to exercise more isn't a good message to put across.

Gosh darn I wish I didn't have to write this down... But people keep misinterpreting messages and seeking for negativity where there clearly isn't any... We are raising a nation of squibs.
Loved this episode by the way (8.5/10), and it was definitely worth the wait... But since the perceiving was MASSIVELY fussed... It's time to manifest my thoughts.
    I'll reprise,
He probably took the Old Pug's comment too seriously and seemed very hurt by it, leading to his current view, look at the guy, he was devastated.
Trying to achieve your ideal weight based on body mass has no backing implications, having different complexion is one thing and having extra or less body mass is a whole other.
Fat shaming isn't there (what the Old Pug did was thought and I see no one complaining)
The only thing depicted on this brief scene is that Bandit wanted to loose some extra weight without reaching any extreme, there's is nothing wrongful by that in my fair opinion.
Take the extreme, I'm underweight... On the current beauty canons, it'd be seen as conventional.
It's not, again, complexion is one thing and body weight is a whole other story.
I respect these people's views, but calling out illusive implications was definitely not on Ludo's mindset.
Now... Lol, I want to say something else
Take Trix, she's a little chubby and is willing to go on a diet; but gets too tempted by CC's... Then again, she's quite active on hockey.
And Chilli herself, on the first season she went on daily mornin' trolls and runs, went for her hockey tournaments and then went on to yoga... She was always on the move (not to mention all the extra exercise she acquired from the kids games along with Bandit), but as we've seen both also gets fatigued and want to take a break (Housework, Whale Watching)
So maybe that's why she said "Oh, man", she realized her work-out sessions haven't been as constant as they used to be, and she probably got disappointed by that fact (and I already covered Bandit).
But, that's their mindset, it's up to them (being characters it's even more evident), you guys don't need to follow them, it's a free choice whatever you want your lifestyle to be. It's their decision, if you don't agree then don't follow it.
Having mistakes (if you disagree with their actions) will always happen, as these characters are written as people; and as they are imperfect and complex they'll again commit mistakes or actions you won't necessarily agree with, and yet we'll still love them; "take the good from the bad" as Chilli once said.
These are characters, again, you don't need to follow them... This is what makes the show so beautiful, the complexity of the character development and structure gives them varied and compounded mindsets, as if they were actual individuals on out society. These two are lovable persons, but again not perfect. They probably are not real, but hugely close enough.
But again, you don't need to follow it, the company's purpose isn't to perceive this is the ONLY perspective, it's just depicting a specifical mindset, and as they are personifications, view them as that.
They are not perfect, so won't agree with all their choices, and again, you don't have to. As long as you're happy and healthy, it shouldn't be a problem.
They are cartoon dogs, you decide if you take their advice.

as someone who is overweight and has dealt with being really insecure about it since i was in like 5th grade, i do think the opening scene can be problematic, depending on who's watching it. its a very easy mistake to make to write in a silly weight loss gag because we've all been there, but it's not necessarily a good thing that it's so engrained in our society (joker laugh) to be upset by our appearance if we're fat. and (from personal experience) seeing people not like their appearance because of their weight *can* and *does* impact children, not all children but i wouldnt be surprised if it engrains that message into a good amount of them that fat=unhealthy or ugly (i should clarify that some fat people are in fact fit and healthy). and i say this because its definitely impacted me seeing other family members say these things, and only recently have i felt more comfortable exercising because it's solely for my own health.
i was also kinda like "huh" when i saw there was controversy for this episode, and when i watched aussie girl margies video i was a bit hesitant yet open-minded, but when i watched it it all made sense because yeah, it could've been handled better. this show is amazing, like genuinely one of the best children's media out there right now, but it has its flaws and its ok to acknowledge if certain aspects of it can be harmful, even if might not be to everyone. am i saying this episode will give a generation of children eating disorders, of course not lmao and this show is doing so much good for kids mental wellbeing already. but it's not the best idea to perpetuate stuff like that, even if its a lot more subtle here. i think discussion and criticism is very welcome but calling the episode toxic is going a bit far (especially because most of the episode is just having fun getting healthy, and being a lovely concept overall), even if i can understand being upset
so yeah this is an extremely long comment but in summary this is one of the few bluey controversies i actually kind of get, i hope this isnt too all over the place i just have a lot to say

Okay, after seeing this, I can somewhat understand why some people think this episode was fatphobic. But for me, as someone who is fat and has had eating related issues before (I have never been diagnosed with any eating disorders, but I have struggled with stuff that may seem similar for years now and have made me question if I do have one)... I don't really think it was fatphobic. I myself saw this episode a few days ago before later that I will have my yearly checkup soon. And that got me super anxious since over the past year, my eating related issues had worsened. And while I'm slowly getting better, it does scare me that I'll have some health issues. But after thinking about this episode again, it made me feel better about myself. I heavily related to how Bandit felt, and I do feel like people are somewhat taking this overboard. I do think there are ways this episode could've improved on, but I do think it has a good message and I liked it a lot.

I feel like it kinda was. Not in intention but in practice. Seeing this kind of behaviour in my mother lead to me ending up with an ED. I don’t feel like it’s so terrible that the episode needs to be banned but I know first hand how seeing your parents weighing themselves constantly and squeezing their fat and looking at themselves like that in front of you as a child will do to you. I think the start of the episode was mishandled. It makes exercising and getting fit into being about weight rather than how fit you actually feel and what you can gain from it instead of what you can loose. It wasn’t about getting fitter, about being stronger or faster or gaining more endurance, it was about the weight and the belly fat. I feel very much like this isn’t fat phobia but a mishandled attempt at coming up with a catalyst for the exercise and fitness aspect of the episode
I had a much worse experience with Lazy Town. It encouraged my classmates to exercise but it also encouraged them to call me fat and lazy despite being thinner than them, because my undiagnosed chronic illnesses made me visibly struggle during PE class. But that’s just me I guess

When you're older you worry about your health more because you don't want to get out of shape, have a bad diet, or become overweight because all those things can lead to issues. A lot of Bluey episodes have relatable things. This is just another one.

To me it's how Bandit was looking at himself in the full-body mirror, with him pinching himself and all. It reminded me of body checking, which is something some people with eating disorders do. Some of them wrap their thumb and pointer finger around their wrist, some pinch themselves in certain areas. As someone who has had a parent go on multiple fad diets only to end up gaining the weight back, I do understand from that perspective.
Overall, I agree that it was unintentional, and it was blown out of proportion. Even political channels (grifters I call them), were accusing my political side of the spectrum without even thinking about it from the perspective of someone who has seen the unhealthy side of it.

Honestly I thought the controversy for the episode was quite... laughable, and this is coming from someone who draws roundish characters from time to time, I'm not a big guy myself but I'm around the skinny fat area, I think this episode was doing a good job showing the importance of Health and really Bandit being concerned about his weight is nothing to be angry about (plus I always imagined Bandit with some kind of a Dad bod 🤭)
Although I will point out 5:45 there is a clip in Daddy Robot where he's eating out of a Tupperware making all kinds of *NOM* *NOM* noises and as soon as Bluey and Bingo approach he frenzily eats it.

Honestly as a person who is overweight I didn't feel shamed, more like I had sympathy for Bandit and Chillii. Bandit was saying it was harder to find time to exercise because work and spending time with his kids, which for parents this day and age is probably really difficult. But the kids playing a game that required a lot more active activies allowed for Bandit to get in the exercise he wanted. Looking it up Bandit and Chillii are in their early 40s which at about that time a lot of adults do start to worry about their health and weight more.

This episode was actually really good and I can totally relate to it. I think people digging too deep trying to find a meaning over a scene that is so simple can hurt other’s opinions. I’m overweight, I do exercise, and at first seeing that, no matter what you do, you can’t achieve a goal on your weight it can be a bit annoying. And I think Ludo did great on this one. Removing a scene because someone could find it offensive may take the only little thing others could relate to, and I think this episode achieves the goal to teach us to be happy while we do our best, not the other way around.

Hey B&B - must say I'm with your dad on this one. I am sooo over the faux outrage I can't bring myself to watch your video - I just don't want to hear about it anymore (will let it run in another tab to feed the algorithm though 😘). My simple take is that Bandit is going through what ALL middle-age men (dogs?) do over 40 - come to terms with their "gut". He exercises, not at a gym but in the back yard, while playing with his kids. His body shape doesn't change, we don't even know if his weight changes, but he does get healthier as his blood pressure comes down. That's it! There's no derogatory language, there's no negative visuals - it's just a dad that blames work and kids for being out of shape only to discover ways around those excuses. As an older man, I can honestly relate to this episode on so many levels. Forget the click-bait titles, professional whingers and others using Bluey to promote their specific agendas. They are simply not worth it.

I was pretty okay with Bandit being like aww man about his weight because it’s been hinted at a couple times that he’s a little overweight. But Chili has always had a health conscious lifestyle. We see her going for runs and eating healthy most of the time, excusing the times when she indulges in corn chips. So including her as well when they had no intention of including her in the working out scenes makes no sense and feeds the stereotype that women are never satisfied with their bodies. Which isn’t cool.

I kinda wished they would put more old Simpson references in the show like "I'd like to get down now" and "you got the stink lines and everything." I was half expecting Bandit to say "Im a whale, from now on exercise every morning" when he looked down at the scale. But this is really teetering on "squibs" territory here, you can't portray a dad getting a little heavy and wanting to do something about it without complaining about "fat-shaming?" Honestly even the doctor visit and health issue is really unnecessary and not needed, don't we all get a little heavier or more out-of-shape and wish to do something about it. It's completely ridiculous, or is this just an "out-of-touch old way" of thinking.

I think what it comes down to is whether or not Bandit felt forced into doing it because that's a big difference. Since there is an instance of Bandit getting insulted in that way it can be argued that while at the time he might've shrugged it off but over time began to actually feel bad about his body. So shockingly I can actually see where this stemmed from, because Bandit is not a lazy guy by any means and he regularly indulges in his kids games quite happily that require him to be active, he's shown to love racing even if a little too much and he loves to dance with his kids too.

😐 with headlines like "I finally found a bluey episode I hate" makes it sound like they were just looking for a reason to start drama. An exercise episode of a baby show is not trying to make anyone super buff or skinny or make anyone feel bad about their body, they are just trying to encourage health. Especially if it is not only for health reasons but for the sake of feeling comfortable in your own skin. In the case of the bluey episode I see Bandit working out not just for health reasons but to feel good about himself by exercising or running around with his kids spending time with them. The people behind Bluey know what they are doing and would never do anything to offend anyone. Good video 👍

Maybe I need to re-watch the episode. I didn't realize there was a controversy. I've been overweight my entire life and I didn't see the episode as fat shaming. Rather, I thought it was more pointing out how difficult it is for parents to meet their fitness goals when they have kids, as we can see Bandit has to incorporate the kids into his work out. And they keep getting in the way. Like it's hard enough to decide to take that ten minutes to try and meet his fitness goals, then your child starts pretending your weights are their car, and you can't even do your planned workout.
It's so easy to get derailed, especially with kids and other responsibilities around, that I think it makes sense showing Bandit trying to figure out where to exercise when his kids immediately took over his work out. So since he is determined, he has to get creative.
I know obesity is a sore subject for many people - I'm still trying to figure out how to lose weight myself. So I won't judge people who deem the episode fat phobic. But from my casual viewing of it, it just seemed like they were portraying life.

If im honest, im seeing more of a character perspective if we really think about it. the time that Bandit was raised was in the early eighties to nineties which wasn't really a positive time for health considering the unhealthy beauty standard of thiness and buffness. but if I were to really look at it it's just a message that you (and persumable kids to a family watching) just staying in shape and being healthy is good for living longer for your kids. Maybe the character of bandit feels insecure that he is what could be considered from the cartoon as overweight, or chunky. I am (unfortunately due to a history of mental health issues and depression) overweight, and I personally don't think this makes bad representation, or sends a bad message.

Obesity is becoming more and more common because people are making it seem like it's perfectly fine. A healthy lifestyle is what we need to be encouraged, especially to the younger generation, who is gonna be our future!
People are literally losing sight of what fat shaming is as well. It's "omg you are so ugly because you are fat ew." not "I need to lose a few pounds to be healthier". 🤦🏽‍♀️ being rude to someone because they are fat is 100% wrong, and I hate it. But encouraging them to be healthier is quite the opposite of being rude! It's having their best interest at heart! :)

I dropped my weight from 85kg to 78kg. You may say that training and simple and light food is being fatphobic. But I name it: working for my future. I want to be a fighter jet Pilot one day, and that's why I'm training.. And to finally get rid off the people who named me fat. Remember: your body, your choice, but stay healthy.
This episode shows a good habits, habits of being healthy. Even if Bandit is doing it because he wants to, this is good! Being healthy is a point of life. And to those of you, who are... Overweight because of some biological stuff (I don't really know what or how this kind of stuff is happening, I'm a man of technology, not biology ^^") try to do something with that. And if it isn't possible, this isn't the end of the world. You're still a normal human, like me, or others. We still accept you as a preson you are.

It's like we live in a backwards world that telling people it's unhealthy and unattractive to be overweight is wrong. Fat people aren't evil or anything, they should just stop eating so much while exercising more for their own good. If an adult wants to stay fat or get fatter, that's their own sad choice, but that won't stop the rest of us from telling them how bad of a choice that is and encouraging the younger generation to maintain a healthy weight and avoid unhealthy lifestyles.
    This is really straightforward stuff.

As someone who's trying to lose weight, the main factor that was making me more fat was stress and the bullying I suffer from being a fat kid.
These things most of the time will just make either someone gain more weight, duo to stress eating, or make them go extra and gain eating disorders.
If you want someone to get more healthy then you should motivate them and give constructive criticism.

I know there's a difference between body positivity and fighting against fat-phobia and I believe that difference needs to be outlined here. This episode of Bluey wasn't trying to make people feel bad about having some extra weight on them it was showing how some people feel uncomfortable with their weight or body and struggle to find the resources or time to take the actions they want to in order to be more comfortable in their own body. I've gained a few pounds over the last few years and just a couple weeks ago made it a habit to go on an hour walk every day (with exclusions for certain situations like rainy or dangerous weather). This episode made someone like me feel seen because I am uncomfortable with how I currently look and want to work towards being in a body that makes me feel more positive about myself. I know there's plenty of people who are okay with how they are but face criticism from the outside world, but that's not what Exercise (the episode) is about. It's about Bandit feeling uncomfortable with how his body looks and wanting to do something to feel like a better version of HIMSELF. If this episode aired right after Granny-mobile I think people on the "this is fat-phobia" side of the argument would be more valid on their point. I see where they're coming from but it shouldn't be taken away from the people it makes feel seen like myself.

Absolute nonsense. There was no fat-shaming whatsoever. Just two characters unhappy about their weight. People have a right to want to be healthy and/or to be concerned about their health/weight, that doesn't need an explanation. If people feel attacked by this, maybe they should ask themselves why that is. There's probably a reason to be found within those people themselves. Regardless, the show has no blame here.
And its great that they use fun activities with their kids as a way to exercise at the same time.

See, the one thing that never gets spoken about here (and not referring cartoon dogs now) is that for many overweight people, food is a coping mechanism. We eat because of depression, loneliness, boredom, etc. The same things that alcoholics and drug users do is what a lot of big people do. It's medicating a problem that will never go away. Some of us have mental health issues too.

As a fat person with an eating disorder, I do not like what you said in that video. The dogs are stylized, we have no idea if they're fat or rather skinny. And that doesn't matter because it doesn't matter. The bad thing isn't that the episode might give people an eating disorder, its the fact that they view gaining weight as something negative and feel like they have to exercise and get rid of this extra weight to feel good about themselves again. The show is telling you that fat = unattractive, lazy, bad. Which isn't true obviously but our society taught us that and it is the showmakers job to think about things like that. Thats just another piece of media that tells people that they're bad and ugly if they aren't thin. The lines of weight are blurry because every person is different. You cannot be like "yeah I mean there's no need to exercise if you're not obese" thats bullshit and fatphobic. Many fat people can't lose weight by exercising and just generalizing that all fat people should exercise is a bit odd. It's not like you're constantly about to die if you don't go for a jog once a day. thin people can be as unhealthy if not unhealthier than fat people. especially in this time. What I'm saying is: you don't really sound like you know how it is to be fat and how much the media actually influences people. I didn't mind that episode because I'm pretty used to it but I'm glad that there is a shitstorm now, because we need to have this discussion. Each and everyone of us is beautiful no matter what.

EXACTLY! I’m glad I’m not the only who notices the parallels. I think the Bluey episode wasn’t fat shaming, in comparison to Peppa Pig where it’s a running gag.

Ok but in defense of Peppa, she only did that in older season episodes. In the newer ones she no longer does that.

Says the delusional person who thinks you can be genderless. There is no such thing as that. You can only be a girl or a boy.

I wonder if the show will talk about hypochondriacs, since a part of growing up is your body taking a toll on your physical health and the best solution for it is exercise and good eating habits, but its not easy for everyone to simply change their lifestyle.
In the end, when someone is obese; i will not blame the shamers, or the supporters, or the individual in question. But in certain countrys; the government don't really take part in regulating health and food like in America.
