  • Refinishing these side tables made me realize I just don't want to do two specific things anymore when I am using paint. They just don't work for me anymore.

    - Original Poem -
    Paint not with a brush
    You're in a hurry, In a rush
    Smooth and clean
    That is the dream
    Instead of sanding
    Which can be demanding
    To smooth the strokes
    And feeling like a slowpoke
    We will change our methods
    Grow and experiment
    To find a better way
    Finishing projects in fewer days.

This was a perfectly valuable video to post. I think it's nice when furniture refinishing channels tackle cheaper pieces of furniture. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean worthless. We have particle board furniture purchased several decades ago that my family still uses and are just as sturdy as the heavy wood pieces. Plus, it's just satisfying to see tops in that bad of condition be made buttery smooth. The final result is gorgeous, I'm sure your friend is going to love them!

Timbermate is great for filling on veneer tops. You also add a little water. It fills the smallest of holes/cracks and sands well.

Good that you got those bed tables free, they were kind of the bottom of the furniture ladder. Also pleased to know that you aren't averse to changing techniques. We learn over time and what we have done in the past is not always the best plan for the future.

Very well said JP! I'm hoping with the amount of poly I put on these tables they can survive a bit longer than the factory finished pieces, but only time will tell.

@@ReconstructingEmily I've used water base satin poly on a coffee table and two shelving units I refinished years ago. They don't get heavy usage, but all still look great.

I know these weren’t originally high quality but, assuming the original owner paid good money for them, I’m always surprised at how someone people treat furniture!
Anyway, good save! I didn’t imagine these would look that good! 👍🏻 🌟

I usually don’t like painted furniture and wish people would leave nice wooden furniture well alone - however, these weren’t nice wooden antiques of any bodies future and you made them very handsome. Good save. Good choice to paint these.

These are gorgeous, Emily! I’m really appreciative of your evolution in techniques and products over time. I think it’s important for people to see there are many types of furniture that are fine, functional and useful. Going back many decades, furniture has been made out of many other materials other than solid wood, and they often have many more decades of use with some minor repairs and redecoration. I love the update on these tables with cleaning, prep and color changes. As always, I delight in your poetry.🌸

Well done, love the new logo, too! Haven’t completely painted a piece in awhile but I like using a sponge to paint/rub on paint. Any sponge too. At estate sales I shop the garages for supplies like sponges.

@@ReconstructingEmily I like Durham's for grain filling and it's ridiculously inexpensive! However, once you sand it, don't wet wipe it before using (just dry wipe it with a microfiber). It will come back off. You can top it in a couple of hours that way. If you wait a good 24 hours or more before painting, you are probably ok wet wiping at that point. It does continue to harden over time. (Also, just notice that Lorrie and I have the same last name. What the heck?) Thanks for the video! I love to hear your thought process!
