@@chrisdawson6156 yes i would agree you had great actors like Arthur fowler Pauline den watts. angie Dickson fowler. Leslie nick cotton June brown aka dot cotton pat butcher Ethel skinner who was dots bet friend. they didn't have impersonate voice accents like some of the stars do on the present EastEnders.
My daughter was born on 17 feb 85, i was 14. I remember this being on in the tv room of a little country post natal unit way back there in Cornwall England watching this..
Emmerdale's first episode (or Emmerdale Farm as it was known for the first 17 years) opens with a funeral. EastEnders first episode opens with someone unconscious, who's taken to hospital and then later dies. At least Coronation Street got off to a good start without anyone dead or dying in the first episode lol
It's kinda crazy watching uk soaps start with dark openings like in the US the only soap I could think that started dark was Loving (1983-1995) which opened up with a murder and then the final season ending with characters getting murder amd most of them leaving the town due to them being scared they'd be the next victim.
I love watching these early Shows. I live in Canada and it's great to see how it all began. The "Doctor" was a "Street" Doctor who chose to help a Blue Collar Community instead of working at a Hot Shot Hospital. He'd be perfect on St. Elsewhere in The US.
@ yeah that’s true. I think however, as he was still officially contracted to the BBC and took a “hiatus” that his status as being the only character to have an unbroken duration in the show still stands.
I'm recently watching 2015 anniversary episode, similar to this and I'm back here to see the difference comparing between 1985 and 2015. 30 years apart.
David Timothy Scarboro, First Mark Flower, EastEnders February 85/87 Christmas Day, Passed Away Only 20, Tabloids Chased Him & Lied About David, We Will Never Know What Happened To Him As He Found In Beachy Head, Or Will We Ever Know What Kind Of Career He Would Had, RIP, 🙏🙏, It Was Great Show When It Came Out, All Different & Funny Characters, Today's Crop Of Actors In It & Show it's Self Is 💩💩💩, 🤣🤣
Opens with a guy dying. I think that was a hint of things to come. I don't think at any point in its history can it be described as a barrel of laughs.
@@ncb6487it was good during to the 90s and early 00s when I was growing up but it's gone really dark and depressing now. My boyfriend used to love it but he can't stand it now 😂 I used to walk out of the living room when it came on!
@@Ltforlife22 No Michael Jackson was 26 who was born on August 29th 1958, and Madonna was 27 who was born on August 16th 1958. Also August 16th was the day that The Jackson Five debuted as The Opening Act for The supremes as the act she discovered.
@danielsampson7530 No but Smokey Robinson has ties to Soaps. As a young man he would rush home to watch Serach For Tomorrow & Guiding Light that were only on for 15 Minutes per day in Black & White. He loved watching All My Children, General Hospital & One Life To Live. Then he was on Two Soaps Generations and Y & R. Also Guiding Light played alot of Motown Music over the years. This pilot episode was so different from US Soaps.

The most useless Character Ali with his diabolical acting, Pauline making an appointment with the clinic for a TEST 😂😂😂 and Arthur swigging Whiskey from a Dead man’s bottle…. What was there not to love about this show 😂😂😂😂😂
Also on The US Soap Opera As The World Turns Nancy Hughes asks her husband chris what he would like for breakfast in 1956. The Bold & The Beautiful debuted with a Fashion Show in 1987. 😊. When Another World debuted in 1964 The Announcer Bill Wolfe for NBC said "We Do Not Live In This World, But A Thousand Other Worlds. It was co created by Bill Bell who would later create Y & R and B & B.
Feels so surreal watching something when you fully know you didn’t exist when this was filmed.
Reg Cox, the Eastenders character who was in it for the shortest length of time.
"Gawd,it stinks in 'ere,dunnit?"
There's no holding back with Den.
The first ever episode aired on February 1985, and I wasn’t born until the October.😊
I love these classics !
I was 1 nearly 2 when this first aired but it was by far better then compared to now do you agree

0.5x is better once they start speaking!
Whats staggering is arthur was supposed to be 51 when they had the pub team making him 41 here. Thats the oldest 41 year old ive ever seen.

Pauline was old-fashioned in that way, going to her GP Dr Legg, who she trusted implicitly, rather than do the test herself at home
