The Master of Engineering degree in the USA is basically the same as the MS non-thesis option which most graduate students opt for anyway. The difference is to qualify for admission in a Master of Engineering program you must have a bachelors degree in engineering from an accredited university. And there is absolutely no advantage in salary for an MS degree over a ME degree. But not many universities offer a Master of Engineering program.

Both are closely allied fields, so you will face no issue finding jobs after an MS in ME. Target courses in masters to match the job you are looking for.

@@jaimesmith1086 Agree, Waterloo and Vancouver are second to none when it comes to best North America engineering programs. All the big tech companies who recruit from Stanford and MIT also recruit from Waterloo.

Hello, I’ve been accepted and given out-of-state waiver at Master of Engineering general program at Texas Tech University,USA.That means I have to pay in state only.It’s two year course.It’s interdisciplinary nature gives me to choose any subjects or courseworks for 4 semesters from all engineering disciplines like Computer,Electrical, Mechanical,Industrial,Geomatics,etc.I am planning to taking some Machine Learning courses and specialize in that field too.I also wanted to take other management subjects such that it can make me more practically capable.Therefore I am considering this degree over MS.Therefore, my tuition fees will be 8k USD for one year without adding living expenses.Now, the program is allowing internships too while it was not before.Additionally, I did engineering in electronics and communication and worked for 2years as a software developer in XX company.So, will it be good to go and how likely will it affect for approving the VISA in this course.It’s in STEM category and allows OPT too.I’m afraid how should I convince the VO as this is non-thesis based course.However, program advisor is also telling that they will allow us RA/TA if we can from other departments but not from this department.But the selection requirements might be quite different than the normal one.I also got acceptance in another one university in computer science and issued the I-20 including Texas Tech but I got more interested in this course due to its interdisciplinary nature.Would you help me with this that how can I convince the VO and what’s the possibility of student VISA getting approved.I am really in a need of help regarding this matter.
If you are interested in the MEng program and have work experience, you could consider going to TTU. Visa officers have one major concern - will you come back to India at the end of the program. You should make a case that you will be back. The job market will help make the case. Since the costs are really low, it is worth taking the risk and going for this program. Just because aware that the job market is not good right now and may not change for a year.

Hello. I Got accepted to MEng in Mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech and MEng in Mechanical and Aerospace at University of Virginia. I graduate with a bachelor’s in physics this May. Is it worth getting a MEng? Will it open up more opportunities? I have 5 summers of engineering internship experience and I have a job offer as well, but I don’t know if having a degree in physics (concentration: engineering physics) will be good enough.
You are lucky to have something in hand. The job market is bad and may not pick up for some time. So, if you have a job, I think it is better to defer the admit, and join the next year. I have seen people defer by even two years as they keep working. In the meantime, you will get some savings and additional time to reflect if a Masters degree is for you. Typically, only R&D jobs require a Masters degree, not other functions. In your case, your internships have given you enough real world experience. Academic degrees are pretty useless when it comes to the real world. Most people can pick up job skills on the job after beginning work. You can even pick up some MOOC courses by the side or even examine part time study options.

how does MEng effect opt? do we still get a stem opt ,if so how does it compare to a master in science student, they get to stay for 5 years in the years(2 years of enrollment + 3 years of opt) how does this work for MEng
MEng is treated just like MS for OPT purposes. You can stay for 1+3 years in the US even if you dont get picked in the H1b lottery. If you want to work in the US, MEng is more sensible than MS, assuming you can pay tuition for a year.
I am trying to decide between Berkeley MEng in environmental engineering and a MS from Northeastern also in environmental engineering. I am coming from Environmental Science undergrad so I don't have as technical of a background. What would you recommend for me?
This is many ways to look at the choices. Pick up criteria like placement report, starting salary, location you want to be in long term, % of students getting scholarships after a semester in the course and overall cost of the program as important factors. Rank each university on these parameters. Call up the graduate admissions coordinator and talk to alumni from the programs through Linkedin. The idea for you is to learn as much as possible in the Masters program, so your prior exposure or lack of it does not matter. You should be more thoughtful of settling down in Northern Cal vs Boston, these can mean very different things. Berkeley is also one of the most expensive programs around, so you need to have a big bank balance to afford it. I highly recommend not taking huge student loans, as the job market is not good at present. Final two thoughts. A two-year program is better than a one-year program as the job market could change in two years, but I don't see it getting better any time soon. Also, you have an option to defer your admit by a year. Hopefully you have a year of work experience and more savings by then, making iteasier for you.

How likely is it for u to recommend a student to join university of cincinnati with no work experience in india and has no other choices except for the Meng in CS course for fall 2023? What are all the disadvantages that one can face if they opt it considering the ongoing recession?
Hi Manas, if there is no other choice, it is fine to join Cincinnati for M Eng. Because it is on CS, you will find some job ultimately, though the US is in the middle of a recession. You have to be in job search mode right from day one of entering campus. The college experience will take a bit of a hit. At the same time if you are focused on ROI and earning, there is no program better than an MEng in CS.

How is the Oregon State University for M. Eng. in Computer Science ?
Even though Oregon State is an average university, the CS program is much better. More than the university, think of the M.Eng program. You need to have some work experience, to avoid desperately searching for jobs. This is assuming that the current recession continues.
Considering the current job market, would you recommend pursuing an MEng in CS at Cornell University?
Hi Harshit, MEng at Cornell is a great course, and got among the best placements in the country. The only issue is that the program will feel very rushed, as you will be studying and job searching at the same time. You should already have the skills before hand either by taking online classes or through work experience. If you want to enjoy college life and have a chill experience, MS makes mores sense.

However, I am concerned about no internship opportunities in the program. Won't it make it more challenging to secure a job after graduation without that experience, especially with the current market scenario?
@@harshitbhardwaj8888 @Harshit. with work experience, you will definitely have an edge over other candidates. So the MEng program could be a really good fir for you. Internships don't make it easier to get a job, your ability to answer interview questions and technical knowledge will be your biggest help. Nobody knows if the recession will become better or worse over the next couple of years. But CS jobs will always be there and recruiters will always recruit at Cornell. In most cases you 'll find a Master of Computer Science or a Master of Science in Computer Science. Rare would you find a Master of Engineering in Computer Science.

How can i negotiate for internships & assistanceships as CPT is not there for this course.
MEng does make sense from a financial perspective, but it gives little time to network and search for a job. I think if you are in a one year program, the internship search will be tough. You can instead spend your time for a full-time role asap once you end up there. I personally have not worked with students from TTU, but Texas is a great place for job seekers.

How is the University of Cincinnati for M. Eng. in Electrical Engineering ?
Hi Asma, UCincinnati is an average university but affordable. Placements will be in the east coast and midwest. Not highly recommended but worth joining, if you badly want to work in the US. You will get some sort of job, even if it is not high paying. Note, most midwest companies are not paymasters. Also, since the job market is down, MEng programs will not give you much time to find a job, so you should be job networking the moment you land in the US.

Most MS programs need a 4 years of undergrad education. Hence after a MSc in India, you will be in a better position to apply for MS programs in the US.

Aerospace engineering is too niche. Not too recommended, try Mech programs instead. Yes MS in Mech is always a good choice as it allows you the chance to choose among various specializations.

It is tough, you have to do job search in the fall and spring semesters in addition to studying. If you really want to study and gain expertise, MS may be a better option.

Australia is ANU and Melbourne. Canada is typically Toronto and McGill. Irrespective of discipline, you need to be in a place with lots of job prospects.

That is a good choice. There are lots of jobs in Cincinnati, not in big tech software, but in SE roles in manufacturing, retail, logistics etc. I don't have enough information about you, but this seems a good choice.

For mining, it is better to be in Australia or in Texas. I really doubt the options you will have in Canada. You can email the university graduate admissions team to ask questions. In most universities in Texas, there are lots of jobs in oil companies. They recruit heavily from mining majors.

Yes, it can help for sure, MEng makes you do important coursework. MS degree makes you focus on a research topic so that you can use that experience to get into a PhD program. So MS can help even more.

MEng is treated like MS by visa officers. Provided you show ample funds, they will be more likely to approve your visa.

All masters programs are expensive, but MEng programs are for a year. Working as a RA or TA has to be balanced with finding a job.
Hi, I have one admit from M.Eng Biomedical Engineering from Cornell which is one year program and the other admit is from MS Bioengineering program from UCSD. I am confused to choose between the two.
Cornell is a great school, but MEng could bee hectic, especially with the job scenario as it is right now. A better choice would be MS, as it gives time for you to look for a job.
