Cut-Rate Commander - Precon Upgrade Guide for the Riders of Rohan Precon & its face commander - Eowyn, Shieldmaiden - from Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth #mtg #commander #edh #mtgxlotr
The Men of the West Ride again as we tackle the Riders of Rohan precon upgrade from Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth - with the White Lady of Rohan - Eowyn, Shieldmaiden - leading thse firce humans into battle against the forces of Sauron.
In this upgrade, we’ll be further building upon the core builds tribal and go wide themes by adding in even more humans that either produce tribal tokens to further build up our board so we can reliable proc our commanders token creation and get her draw online as quickly as possible, include additional ways to power up our wide board states so they can hit even harder, and then just make some quality of life changes to the build by building up its ramp package and refining its core stats to further improve the builds performance - allowing the Men of the West to overwhelm whatever forces they may encounter on the battlefield.

I was able to buy about 20 or so of these upgrades from my local card shop, and that same evening I went 3-0 against my usual friend group. I was able to close out one of the games with Archetype of Imagination and I closed out another game with Mirror Entity. Extremely solid upgrade. Thanks!
I appreciate the detailed rationale you include for each addition/removal! I already have a Neyali tokens and a Kyler humans deck so I already have most of your suggested cards, I’ll have to give these changes a try! The only major omission I saw was Call the Coppercoats, my favorite instant-speed Human token maker!
I loved how you introduced Eowyn and her character. It really makes me wish they had put in a card of Merry to play along with her for when she killed the witch king

The focus on triggering Eowyn the turn she comes down is something I think the precon really missed. Been really lame playing her on turn 5 with no payoff and just passing. Great job again!
Same with Abaddon and Marneus Calgar from the 40k precons. They're really keeping the ceiling low so you have to go out and buy more.

Highly highly recommend herald of hoofbeats from the knights tribal deck. 99 cent card and it’s a human that provides evasion for all your tokens and eowyn. also for that card advantage, I would also recommend Neyali, sun’s vanguard, we’re making so many tokens, give ‘em double strike AND cast stuff off the top of your library ! Anyways that’s my two cents, other than that, great video! :)

Solid upgrade. For these combat-focused builds, you might mention Sword of the Animist or Sword of Hearth and Home, especially with the UB box-topper printings they just had that should be bringing down their prices a little.

A pet card I like that fits perfectly in this deck is Scheming Fence. It's a 2 drop human that turns off the activated abilities of a nonland permanent and steals it for itself. At worst it can shut off your opponents Sol Ring. At best imagine stealing a Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker!
Guys this is one of my best Decks in my playgroup! Kindred Discovery, Shared Animosity and Greymond are the best cards! They glue the Humans pretty good together and give you a huge edge over your opponents. My Favourite Deck and i am glad i built it. :)

The main deck is a lot of fun, but I just bought the cards to upgrade the deck, and can't wait to try it out.
In the future, can you also create a deck list with only the upgrades?
And maybe the deck needs more protection.

I think it's weird that Eowyn and Rohan in general is Jeskai. They feel more Boros or Naya, the blue just feels off.

I wasn’t interested in this one, I only wanted Food one to play/upgrade and the Mordor one to strip it for cards. But man…after watching this, I got myself one just 2 days ago and I’m about to order the upgrades!
Love the work you’ve done here! Especially how you’ve incorporated alternative commander and his subtheme as a draw engine that will make the game more fun and engaging at more casual tables. Not my cup of tea honestly, but I see and appreciate the great work you do!
P.S.
In your opinion, which is the best human tribal commander? Eowyn has a fair shot as she’s a token producer with card advantage stapled onto her and she opens up 2 additional colours for us. Though blue feels weird for me here; it’s an afterthought. It makes for a few generically good cards, but very few old human tribal classics are blue. On the other hand, we only got some decent tribal support and commanders for humans in GW and WB recently, so I’m not sure how much of an actual miss the blue is here.

I still eatch your every video and you’re still my favourite MtG EDH content creator. It’s especially nice bc your videos usually come out at the night between Saturday and Sunday for me, and I’m usually on-call then. So whenever I get up in the middle of the night for work, after I’m done I’m always like “Well, since I’m up, let’s see if Grazzet’s new video is out!”

Love these upgrade vids, have used them plenty in the past - but for these LotR decks, I'm tempted to keep them together as a sort of battle box and only upgrade from the main set to keep the flavor and aesthetic. Any shot at you doing a few short videos on flavor-specific upgrades?

Sadly, there are no plans to do a more "in flavor" build for these, but honesty - for Food and Fellowship // Riders of Rohan at least - you can probably run them out of the box as is or with only a handful of changes from the Main LotR set and they would still be pretty good. Not as good as a fully tuned up build, but pretty still pretty solid and you do get style points - so there is that!
For this i make my own proxies. Did it with my Tyranid Deck. Its some work but in the end its great to have a tuned deck within the full flavor
I found Professional Face Breakers to be a worthy creature

Neyali, Suns' Vanguard would be a fine addition as another human that can turn all our tokens into double strikers and generate card advantage through her pseudo-impulse draw, and Myrel, Shield of Argive can also find a home here as another tribe member who prevents our opponents from casting spells and/or preventing abilities from being activated on our turn to help keep our board state intact while getting us some non-tribal token to help screen attacks for us as our humans crack in.
