Come from a 323 area code. Who's this? Where do you come from? Also in the middle of work. But you know okay. Yeah, that's better. Thanks. Yeah no I've been listening for quite a while. I wanted to like perhaps everything I'm saying with that because you know a big part of my political education came from listening to Michael Brooks. And just the way he was able to talk about the stuff going on internationally and everything else was really something that I connected with. And the past in my opinion is the past year with what's going on in Ukraine and everything has been very disappointing just in the way that I've been hearing it talked about. And especially just from people like yourselves who I've come to understand that like your guys' job is much more in the political Realm and understanding what's going on politically. And in the realm of Politics as opposed to you know a more International lens. Which is what I know Michael Brooks was amazing at. You know and just from the aspect of NATO's involvement the recent leaks that have come out regarding you know the CIA had funded the Ukrainian Nazis the Azov Battalion it just felt like a lot of the discourse around it was from my view from a very racist lens. Because in my understanding of things had that same situation gone down and anywhere outside of Europe then it would have been the discourse of we've been down this road before. We know what it's like to have to sit there and fund small right-wing far right-wing sections of a government that seems small and then 20 years later we have a full-on God knows what. But that's what happens when you put billions and billions of dollars into the hands of Nazis. So wait a second so let me let me see if I understand the way you're characterizing what's going on in Ukraine. For you, the top line of the Ukrainian conflict is the U.S. starts funding a small band of Nazis in a country. Do you feel like you're missing a step or two with that timeline? What I'm getting at. No, you still don't know. you still don't know. Give me an example of when the United States funded a country's Army let's say when they were invaded by another country. Kuwait I don't know that we gave them funding. But we came in with the military. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if we gave them some money as well. I would imagine we also gave them money but we brought in troops. What I'm trying to get at is the discourse, see I'm not saying that Russia is right in its Invasion. I'm Anti-Imperialist and it's a war of sovereignty. But what I'm seeing is the discourse around it. I'm only criticizing the way that you presented the conflict. You led with I mean I want to say you led with the tail but not even. Was the president before he was not democratically elected and has it not been shown that that Revolution was highly funded by a CIA operation to overthrow that democratically elected president because he was a Russian Ally and was going to go against American hegemony. So I think without understanding that context the answer is I. I think that it's highly disputed that if you're saying that the but for in the Revolution was a function of U.S of U.S money. I think you're wrong. I don't think it was the sole reason but I think that U.S. hegemony has gotten very good at pushing things in its direction in the way it wants to go. Also in some ways too I mean also really bad. well I mean I would say that it's all bad when you're giving money.
I hate when I'm so anti-imperialist that I end up justifying Russian imperialism.
Horseshoe theory with Russian characteristics.

@Illhan Omar's Brother "adolf" 🤡
Sit down, fash. 😂
Even his dog is like shut up man, you're embarrassing yourself, just stop talking.
It's a fundamental misunderstanding of how NATO works... NATO doesn't choose where it goes, countries apply to join. I'm Finnish, we had NO interest in joining NATO until the Russians invaded Ukraine. Now we're in NATO.
NATO didn't get to come in here, WE applied to join.
Using NATO expansion as a justification for Russian imperialism is just pathetic. Especially as said expansion was countries joining NATO specifically for protection from said Russian imperialism 🙄
That's a lie, I saw Abrams rolling in through Helsinki and Sanna Marin held at gunpoint on TV by NATO general! Facts ;)
That's not at all true. The USA tries to use NATO to influence Europe. Just like all government programs it looks for a reason to continue existing. NATO ran its course and should be abolished.
What the heck do you mean we applied for NATO? Did you personally vote for it? I doubt it. Your nation state isn't you. I'm not the USA. I'm not responsible for what the empire of my citizenship does.
Have some autonomy man.
Thats a common misconception. The NATO members decide if a country is allowed to join NATO or not. Non-aligned countries cannot simply decide to join and thats it. So it was and is a conscious decision of the NATO (or more specifically, of NATO members) to allow the expansion of NATO towards Russia. That's just a fact.
@@stonythewoke9921 Yes, and as op said, countries APPLY to join, then it is up to the NATO members. So it starts with the country wanting to join. If a sovereign country wants to apply, it can do that, russia should not have any say in that.
What does the war in Ukraine has to do with Finland?
The most telling part of this is when Sam is asking him a simple policy question and he can not untangle it from his personal experience. "I don't know any arms dealers". Like dude c'mon. Get serious. Humble yourself a little. This isn't about you. You are saying you don't like what the government did. Sam is asking you what the government should have done. And you don't have a good answer so you obscure the whole thing with hypothetical barriers. And instead of humbling yourself and seeing the flaw in your logic. You get defensive. You keep it personal. I hope this person takes this call as a learning moment for themselves.

Glad to hear that Progressive America has a coherent view of the Ukraine war that starts with the idea that a country with aspirations to democracy deserves support against an imperialist invasion. We still support countries like Hungary which are apparently drifting away from democracy. This is perhaps a moment when America can start to make amends for the Iraq war by reaffirming its belief in democracy.
Why is democracy worth defending? Democracy is embarrassing. It relies on lies to exist.

No offense, but for this guy saying he was a fan of Michael Brooks, he surely didn't pick up a fking thing Brooks was about. Brooks was well read, he understood the actual history of the region. The fact 1 regiment of nazis (even if we give you that) in proportion to an army of 300 to 400 thousand people is *laughable* and Michael Brooks wouldn't have even given that line of reasoning the time of day.
Just a reminder, NATO expansion is countries applying for NATO, meeting a certain criteria, voting it through their parliament, and getting approval from all other members. The countries in Eastern europe were so desperate to get into NATO some of them like Poland literally started lobbying in US politics. So framing this like it’s done to us is crazy. Let me say I completely disagree with Sam on NATO enlargement. It is a force for good because it allows contries that would have been under the sword of Russia to develop without the fear of invasion, it comes with anti-corruption measures and investment plus expertise in that investment. It doesn't matter that Russian is acting as a violent imperial power in this, so long as America doesn't want them to. There is no point at which this ends -- Russia could march armies out to expand to USSR-era borders and beyond. Imperialism is ONLY bad when America does it, so any country that's an American adversary gets a pass.
This is what shallow, zero-thought politics does to someone's brain.

Why misplaced? Isnt there genuine concern that USA would force this into a nuclear war as they ratchet up the funding and lethal weaponry???
Good response, guys. This issue is becoming something of a litmus test for someone's basic principles. I'm pretty sure Michael would have shown solidarity with Ukraine.
Of course. I don't think he'd have supported a continued supply of these weapons packages without any negotiation conditions, though. In fact, I think he would've been staunchly opposed.

Sure have, and every single time it seems like they have some empty-headed criticism that they haven't thought through, but they start off being polite and pretending it's all in good faith. As the conversation progresses and the holes in their logic become exposed, they double down on the talking points they've gotten from Jackson Hinkle, Infrared, Jimmy Dore etc etc and they show their true colors. Then they just gish gallop for the rest of the call. Par for the course with these guys.
To be honest Michael brooks always had a slightly more complex understanding of current affairs that Sam just doesn’t have. Generally I can always expect what Sam will say on something. What i think is crazy is to think these guys would be capable to take any criticism whatsoever. Sam has his ego, and the others imitate by default, sadly never adding anything non trivial to any discussion (be it youth per be it Sam preferring not to be upstaged and selecting colleagues accordingly... Whichever). They move the goalposts and try to make this poor guy defend international politics, while all he was calling in about was the coverage, the discussion of these matters, hardly to apply for the position of minister of defense. But it's an easy way to embarrass the caller, as nobody has an intelligent answer to any of this, so then they can continue to feel extremely superior to anyone daring to comment on their product. And this is still the least shit left outlet i know... Sad state of affairs.
Sam asks what country the US has backed against an invasion in the past as if it's a counterpoint to the caller, but the obvious example is Afghanistan. And if you'll recall, indiscriminantly pouring money and weapons into the resistance, including many right wing extremists, in an effort to prolong the Russian bleeding...did not end so well that time.

On December 5, 1994 the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Britain, and the United States signed a memorandum to provide Ukraine with security assurances in connection with its accession to the NPT as a non-nuclear weapon state.
In return for neutrality that EuroMaidan i.e., pro west anti russia and vocally so, absolutely went back on.
As soon as they aligned with the USA and starting threatening the agreements with the Black Sea port Sevastopol they tore up that condition.

I think it's appalling the way some Americans and US politicians aren't only against supporting Ukraine but are actually pro-Putin. It's infuriating the way US policy vacillates between wanting to dictate to the rest of the world how to live but then refuses to rally round and pull its weight by supporting an ally. It's the same with climate change, while most nations are trying to fight it, lots of US politicians are still denying its existence and refusing to help.
